Notes from a Meeting

5

Parishioner Tom Heiting represented Toddhall at an Episcopal Camps & Conference Centersnational conference 11 through 14 January. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori was inattendance for three nights and gave the keynote address.

Fr. Dale and Pr. Ron, When I shared this information with my EfM group, they wanted to see notes on myexperience which I also e-mail to you. I met our Presiding Bishop Sunday evening during first event – an icebreaker. Being myfirst conference and not knowing others yet, I was a bit aloof. The Presiding Bishop came upto me standing alone and introduced herself. During our intro she asked about my church andbegan asking numerous questions once the concept was mentioned of joint facility, outreach, and occasional worship among St George’s and St Mark. She began keynote address by relating her story and the need for discipline. The need forPhysical Discipline, Discipline to live by a “Rule of Life”, and Discipline for Spiritual Direction. She then said that best solutions are found by searching for that which is Common--Commonbetween “I and God” and, most important, “I and God and Community”. Disagreementsdon’t often surface when we are disciplined to focus on “I and God and Community” becauseof the amount of work required in our world. Her example was the extent of efforts afterKatrina and how people from all faiths perform the work in unison . She went on to state that our Faith must be shown in Church and out of Church. We mustfocus on the needs of others. Re-building the Episcopal Church must begin with acceptance ofall people. Re-building is not national but international. She outlined five steps in this re-building process [to the best of my note-taking]: 1) Begin with God’s Mission [be moreconcerned with God’s mission which occasionally does not align with Church mission]; 2)Youth [not only attend to but also challenge youth with major Church responsibility]; 3)Congregational mission – get out of pews and accomplish God’s Mission [show love of Godin workplace, at home, and on the street]; 4) Reconciliation/Evangelism [evangelize fromposition of meekness, not strength; 5) Partnership [with other churches & in other countries]. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori closed up-beat with a positive outlook for ourEpiscopal Church and stated how she already sees a positive change with new administrationin our nation’s capital. There is a marvelous calming that takes place during one-on-one meeting and in a largegroup with the Presiding Bishop. A very articulate/knowledgeable speaker who is clearly agreat listener, she answers every question thoughtfully and thoroughly with a sense that she isgenuinally interested in the cares and concerns of the person asking the question. In closing, there is more to the experience of meeting her than the above few sentences portray.

Inside

St. George’s Parish Mission? To Love and Serve the Lord and our Neighbors as Ourselves

S George’s Dragont.

Trial Run

Saturday,Seven March,Save daylight:Spring ahead!

A clergyman who visited St. George’s remarkedin his sermon that it was (I forget his actual words)foolish for Christians to change their behavior “forLent” when it is how they should behave all the time.Probably so, but we can surely use Lent as a time to tryout new (good!) behaviors to see if they fit, so to speak. Most of us have little lists of how we could improve (inspite of being marvelous in other ways, of course). Thisseason, with the days getting longer and the naturalworld just waiting to break forth with all sorts ofnewness, is the perfect time to take just oneimprovement from that list and give it a run for 40 day.

Of course, most of us cannot just wake up on AshWednesday and say, “I’m going to start [fill in the blank]this morning.” We must do some planning, like Jael, before we suddenly drive a peg of change into our semi-conscious lives. Planning requires awareness, andawareness of how we really spend our free time can bescary. But we are getting ready to run the good race--just to see if it suits us, mind!--and we have the bestCoach available in or out of this world, if we’ll just askfor the help.
