Deacon’s Corner

“And all we have are five loaves and two

fish”

We are all familiar with the story of the

multiplication of the loaves and fish.

Seems like an impossible task to satisfy so

many. It’s hard not to look at the size of the

problem when considering what to do or

not to do. It’s hard to not “size up the situ-

ation” before deciding whether to act or

not act, get involved or sit on the sideline.

It’s hard to not look at the totality of a

problem and think to ourselves, “What dif-

ference could I possibly make? I’m just one

person.”

I am just five loaves and a couple of fish.

And we are right, in a certain sense. We

don’t know and can’t know. But that’s not

our job. That’s not the kind of life God is

asking us to lead, one in which everything

is calculated and planned and evaluated

and mapped out. You see, it doesn’t matter

if we don’t know how God is going to take

the little we can each provide and turn it

into something wonderful and life-

changing for others. In God’s eyes no

problem is too big and no act of love too

small or unimportant or insignificant. In

God’s world, God’s kingdom, even small

things can make a huge difference.

God bless,

Deacon John

Eucharistic Adoration

Our Monday day of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament ended on Monday, June 11th and will re-sume in September. Many thanks for all your spent time in prayer and adoration before the Lord. No doubt your prayer brought many favors and blessings to our parish community.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRIBUNAL? The Tribunal is available to help people who have experienced divorce and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. On one hand the durable bond of marriage. This is God’s law. On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Even though a Catholic wedding was celebrated, perhaps there was some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved regarding intentions, understanding or ability? The annulment procedure ad-dresses these circumstances. If you are divorced and want to marry in the Church or remarried outside the Catholic Church, please tele-phone the Tribunal Office at 222 North l7th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103 (215) 587-3750

Burial & Cremation Pope Francis, through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has issued instructions regarding the burial of the deceased especially those who choose cremation. This instruction should help to maintain and recognize the human body as a living temple of Gods presence. Proper respect for the deceased and their re-mains must always be upheld. Copies on the guidelines are availa-ble at the rectory

Natural Family Planning Serious Motives “if, then, there are serious motives to space out births, which derive from the physical or psychological conditions of husbands and wives, or from external conditions, the Church teaches that is then licit to take account the natural rhythms immanent in the generative functions…” Pope Paul VI Humane Vitae, 16 “For just reasons, spouses may wish to space the births of their children. It is their duty to make certain that their desire is not motivated by selfishness but is in conformity with the generosity appropriate to responsible parenthood. Moreo-ver, they should conform their behavior to the objective criteria of morality” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2368 “However, profoundly different from any contraceptive practice is the behavior of married couples, who always remain-ing fundamentally open the gift of life, live their intimacy only in the unfruitful periods, when they are led to this course by serious motives of responsible parenthood. This is true both from the anthropological and moral points of view, be-cause it is rooted in a different conception of the person and of sexuality. The witness of couples who for years have lived in harmony with the plan of the Creator, and who, for proportionately serious reasons, licitly use the methods rightly called “natural,” confirms that it is possible for spouses to live the demands of chastity and of married life with common accord and full self-giving.” - Pontifical Council for the Family, “Vademecum for Confessors Concerning Some Aspects of the Morality of Conjugal Life,” 2.6 Serious motives, just reasons, proportionately serious reasons: The Church teaches the necessity of just or serious motives or reasons for couples to use infertile periods of a women’s cycle for the purpose of spacing births. In doing so she is trying to insure that the natural methods of spacing children are used in a virtuous and loving way, i.e. unselfish-ly. Serious reasons mean important, or non-trivial, reasons deriving “from physical or psychological conditions of hus-band and wife, or from external conditions’ (Humane Vitae,16). Just reasons are, likewise, reasons which correspond to the truth or marriage and the situation of the couple. It is the nature of justice to correspond to the truth. Both terms, serious and just, presume there can be selfish, trivial or unjust reasons for using NFP, reasons not in keeping with the nature of marriage as a community of life and love. Look What’s New! A beautiful new statue of St. Therese of Lisieux now graces our grounds in front of our Parish Center. The statue is a gift from Mrs. Helen To-

land in memory of her late husband Dr. Joseph Toland who passed away in 2016. We are most grateful to Mrs. Toland for her most generous gift and also for the beautiful stone pedestal. This new addition to our grounds instills in us a sense of prayerfulness and quite reflections. Mrs. To-land generosity will be a blessing for generations to come.
