Barry and Vicki's Big Adventure Continues

28 Sep. Had a good night's sleep last

night. Our pensione here in Vienna is very quiet and comfortable. It is in an old building with 12' ceilings and beautiful detail work. I woke up at 4:30 and called Nick. With the 9 hour time difference and the fact that he works and leaves the home quite early, I have not been able to talk to him since we left. It was good to hear his voice and we had a nice talk, then I went back to sleep and slept until 7:00 am. After a nice breakfast at the hotel, we walked to the royal Hapsburg residence. As luck would have it, we were just in time to watch the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions practice for an upcoming performance. They are really gorgeous animals and they practice to beautiful classical music. We learned that most of the trainers are from Spain. After the practice ended, we did a tour of the royal residence, saw all the lovely dishes, cut glass pieces, table settings, silver sets and other decorative and household items. During the tour of the royal residence, we learned the tragic story of Empress Elizabeth, referred to as "Sissy" who was assassinated in Geneva, Switzerland. She was a beautiful woman and the story was quite touching. After we left the royal residence, we toured St. Michael's Church and then had a light lunch in an outdoor cafe. We went back to our pensione to rest awhile and read. Following our afternoon rest, we began exploring more of Vienna on foot, walking down lots of narrow streets with

very lovely shops. I could just picture what this place must be like at Christmas! We walked down a lovely narrow street and found a nice restaurant that had a lot of old world charm. I had Hungarian goulash and Barry had bratwurst and sauerkraut preceded by a bowl of cream of garlic soup which was very good. After dinner, we did some more walking and then stopped for a chocolate gelato. Very good! Earlier today, Barry walked back to the parking garage to retrieve something we left in the car and he said it was so easy to find....we laughed remembering yesterday when we walked blocks out of our way trying to find our way to the plaza where our pensione was located. Looking forward to another nice quiet and restful night. Tomorrow we leave for Venice.

29 Sep. We slept very well, had a nice

breakfast at the pensione. Barry left a book with them for their library. We certainly enjoyed our stay at Pensione Nossek. It is located in the heart of old Vienna, but is so quiet. We didn't hear any sirens or other city noises except for the ringing of church bells which I have come to love. I think I will really miss this sound when we go home. We retrieved our car and left Vienna at 9:00 am. We entered the address of our hotel outside of Venice into our GPS and "she" calculated that we would arrive in Venice at 2:30 pm. We began driving on the freeway and since Barry did all the driving, I had the luxury of looking at all the scenery. One thing I noticed was the lack of litter on the side of the roads. It dawned on me that I had really not seen much litter at all while we've been in

Europe. Another interesting thing was that periodically, we would encounter fence-like structures that really blocked a lot of the view. As we were crossing from Austria into Italy, we came through some rugged mountains. I haven't checked the map, but I think they might be the Dolomites. Lots of big semi-trucks coming into Italy from Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Estonia, and Russia. The amazing thing is that all the big trucks stay in the right hand lane unless they are passing. It was really refreshing! As we got closer to Venice, we could see the terrain and the architecture changing. We left the white stucco or brown houses with red roofs and window boxes to the earth toned homes of Italy. The drive from Vienna to Venice is 381 miles, so a long day. As we were nearing where we needed to exit the freeway, the GPS went all wacky and we didn't exit where we should have because she prompted us to continue on the freeway. What we figured out too late was that a new freeway had opened up AFTER our European chip was made, so our directions were not accurate. We were on the freeway heading to Milan (where we did not want to go)

and at one point in time, the GPS told us to "whenever possible, make a U-turn"....unfortunately we were going 90 kph on a freeway! We finally realized what must have happened and exited at the next exit and by using our maps, SOMEHOW found our way back to a point fairly close to the hotel outside of Venice and from that point our GPS took us right to the hotel. We arrived at the hotel at 3:15 pm so not too bad for the backtracking we had to do. The story is funny now, but it wasn't too funny at the time. We were hot, tired and hungry when we arrived, so after checking into the hotel, we had a snack at the hotel diner. Then we went up to the room to rest and read a little. At 7:00 pm we walked to a local restaurant for dinner. We each had a salad and shared a pizza and half liter of their house red wine. Everything was fabulous! Tomorrow we will catch a bus outside our hotel which will take us to the waterfront where we will buy a day-long ticket for the vaporetto which will take us to Venezia! I'm so excited to see Venice, I hope I will sleep tonight. Vicki

Also, On Sept. 22 Kim Forman coordinated a retreat for the Confirmation class from The Church of the Ascension in

Seattle. They loved our church and walked our labyrinth.

Brush Fire too Close for Comfort!

Friends - After yesterday, I can totally sympathize with the residents of Wenatchee and other E. Washington areas plagued by

wild fires.

As you all know, Belwood Estate is directly

south of North Mason High School; at lunch time yesterday, two youths went into the

brush area just East of the high school and were smoking. The school monitor caught

them and the kids threw their cigarettes into the brush. With no rain in over 50 days and

everything around here dry as a bone, you know what happened next.

At least 5 Fire Districts responded (this many because most of them had sent crews to Eastern WA. and were shorthanded). With the high 35-40 mph winds the fire really

took off. At first, it was headed for the schools; then the wind veered to the north and the fire was heading right for our community. Around 40-50 residents were out

watching; at one point, we were advised to be ready to evacuate at notice. I came back to the house, threw my 2 cats in their crates, gathered legal papers, box of

photos & albums and put it all in the car, along with my purse. I noticed burned out embers on my front lawn, so I wet everything down and set a sprinkler going. Other

residents were doing the same; one lady took pictures of all her valuables with her I-phone. Then, I went back to watch the fire - just two blocks from my house!

Suddenly, there was a wall of black smoke as high as a house with flames shooting up, coming right at Belwood. The fire fighters started a back burn from the pavement

of Hwy. 302 to try to stop it from jumping the road. If this had happened many residents might have lost their homes; fortunately, they were successful in keeping it

contained to the north of Hwy. 302. Finally, the smoke turned white and stayed that way and we all headed back to our homes. A small Fire Dist. crew stayed on duty,

watching for several hours.

Today, the field is still smoking and there is a pall of smoke and stinky air all over the

community; I won't be working outside today!

When something like this happens, we realize what a debt of gratitude we owe those brave men and women of the fire districts. Without their efforts, I could very well be

homeless today.

In our fear, none of us remembered to pray; who does at a time like that?

But thank God, he was on "duty" anyway. Hazel

MINUTES FOR ST. HUGH BISHOP’S COMMITTEE Thursday, September 20, 2012 Members Present: Sunny Cotey Sr. Warden, Dick Moore Jr. Warden, Chuck Huff, Carol Kennedy, Linda Niles, Cheryl Barnes-Wilson, Garby Elmore (secretary pro-tem) Meeting opened with a prayer. Cheryl was elected by acclamation as member-at-large and possible future secretary. Garby was acknowledged as secretary pro-tem. Minutes from August meeting were approved. Finance: Linda Checking account balance $2008.61 and all bills are current Water in July $114.12, Aug. $154.56. Additional water usage due to unseasonable sunshine, and need to water the community garden. Water bill is still under budget ytd by $48.95. It was agreed that if in September the water goes over budget, that the additional will come from the community garden fund (balance in that account is $348.77). Sunny stated that the garden fund was established to pay for its water costs as well as other expenses. The only yard watering currently being done is the front yard and the community garden. The Community Garden committee will be asked to check into a drip watering system on a timer for next year. The power bill was down from $136 to $108. Chuck repaired a refrigerant leak in the heat pump – (pro bono. Thanks a bunch Chuck) and put vibration dampers under it. Insurance: We have a one million dollar coverage for liability and $50,000 damage limit. The diocese carries $10 million damage policy for all parishes, distributed on a first come basis. A play yard/swing set and basket ball hoop were discussed and it was decided not to do either at this time due to the lack of supervision available and possible increase in insurance. It was suggested that we could have games like croquet or boules available for the kids (and wanna-be kids) when adults were present. Storage shed: Dick reported that a new 10x20 storage shed would be in the neighborhood of $3500- $4000, erected on our lot. Considered having it next to the community garden, and the present storage sheds removed and shade parking provided in the area for people with pets in their cars. It was decided to discuss possibilities this fall and to wait until spring to make a final decision. Office shelving: Dick given authorization to purchase shelving for the office closet from Costco (or elsewhere) and the files in the basement will be moved to the office which will make Linda very happy. Parking lot painting will only be to designate handicapped parking places. Letters of Agreement for Clergy and Circle: It was decided that two separate letters of agreement will be made, one for clergy and one for circle members. Sunny and Dick will work on

them, and will present them to clergy and circle members for their review and comments. Youth Mural: Approved. Sheri will supervise, Carol K. and Paddy will help, the kids will do the work. It will be installed on the lower patio wall. Sam Torvend Workshop on liturgy will be this Saturday, Sept. 22. There are about 25 people signed up. It was agreed we will pay him $450.00 for the day. Policy on non-parishoners using facility: Alcohol and smoking on the premises is not allowedThere must be a St. Hugh member on the premises. Sunny will prepare short term (one day) and long term (weekly or monthly) agreements. All applications must be approved by the Bishop’s Committee. Fee for use will by $25 with a $150.00 damage deposit (refundable in whole or in part within a week after the event). An additional $25 will be charged for kitchen use. All applications must include proof of insurance and a hold harmless agreement. Workshop on guns: Proposal by Kim Forman was accepted. Dates to be decided by Kim and presenters. Terry Hershey workshop: Need more information. We’re glad Jim is in contact with him. Narthex clutter: Sunny will put a bin in the copy room, with its contents to be emptied monthly. Pre-convention workshop: October 6

Donate Extra Produce

I keep hearing the question, “What shall we do with all this extra produce?” Of course, it’s nice to make it available to our St. Hugh Family but if there’s still more, the Community Food Pantry in Belfair is happy to take if off your hands. They accept food donations Monday thru Thursday, 10 am to 3 pm. They’re located on the far side of the building across the street from QFC at 140 NE State Hwy 300, next door to North Mason Community Resources.

Let’s Soup Up the Bazaar!!!

Linda Niles announces the 'SOUP PARTY' that will be held on Thursday, October 18th, at the church. This is the annual gathering of all the ingredients and spices that go into the famous 'St. Hugh Soups' that sell so well at our Holiday Bazaar. Be at the church by 10:00 a.m., and be sure to bring measuring spoons, measuring cups, and a large plastic bowl, if you have one. As always, we will use assembly-line set up to measure (accurately!!) the correct amounts of all ingredients into labeled bags, which will then be sealed and made ready for sale.

This 'party' is great fun for all, and is a necessary help to Linda - 'Head Chef' on this project since she brought the idea forward many years ago. The numbers of soup packages have grown from just a few, to over 200. It is not unusual for them to sell out early, as all varieties are not only delicious, but a great value to the customer. Everyone is welcome to come to the soup party to help - SIGN UPS are in the Narthex now. These signs up are for workers AND for donated ingredients needed. Linda will have a list made up for us to review and from which to select our chosen donation items. There will be a deadline stated by which these items MUST be at the church prior to the party!
