GIVING GREENER

As people discuss Pope Francis’s encyclical on environmental stewardship, there’s one thing we can all agree on:

Using less paper and conserving natural resources helps protect our planet – especially since pulp and paper production is the third largest producer of air, water, and land pollution.

As America’s leading eGiving program, Faith Direct is helping churches cut down on

envelope waste and reliance on paper checks.

Overall, since our founding in 2004 Faith Direct has helped eliminate nearly 40 million envelopes. Think about what that has done for the environment!

We hope you’ll consider Faith Direct as you contemplate environmental stewardship, and how churches

are putting Pope Francis’s teachings on the environment into practice.

Saint Mary Magdalene (Feast Day July 22)

Mary Magdelene was one of Christ’s disciples and was present when he died. Early on the morning of the resurrection, she was, according to Saint Mark’s account (16:9), the first to see the risen Lord. By the twelfth century particularly, devotion to Saint Mary Magdalene was widespread in the western Church.

“Apostle of the Apostles"

“Apostle of the Apostles" is the title given Mary Magdalene by St Thomas Aquinas. Her name comes from her home town of Magdala, a fishing village on the western shore of Lake Tiberias. St Luke the Evangelist tells us, in Chapter 8 of his Gospel, how Jesus went from town to town announcing the Good News of the Kingdom of God, and how the Twelve Apostles were with Him together with some women who had been healed of evil spirits or infirmities, and were serving them. Among these was a certain "Mary, called the Magdalene, from whom seven demons came out."

Misconceptions about her identity: she was not a prostitute As Biblical exegesis teaches, the expression 'seven demons' could indicate a serious physical or moral malady that had struck the woman and from which Jesus had freed her. But, until now, tradition has claimed that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. This is only because in Chapter 7 of Luke’s Gospel we read of the conversion of an anonymous "known sinner in that city" who, when Jesus was a guest in the house of a notable Pharisee, bathed His feet with perfume and her tears and dried them with her hair." Without any real textual connection, Mary of Magdala was identified with that unnamed prostitute. But, according to Cardinal Ravasi, there is a further misunderstanding: anointing with perfumed oil is a gesture that was also performed by Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, on a different occasion, as reported by the Evangelist, St John. And so, in some popular traditions, Mary Magdalene has come to be identified with this Mary of Bethany, after being confused with the prostitute of Galilee.

At the foot of the cross Mary Magdalene appears in the Gospels in the most dramatic moment of Jesus' life, when she accompanies Him to Calvary and, along with other women, observes Him from afar. She is still there when Joseph of Arimathea places the body of Jesus in the sepulcher, which is closed with a stone. And on the morning of the first day of the week, she returns to the tomb, finds the stone rolled away, and runs to warn Peter and John. They in turn hurry to the empty tomb and discover that the body of the Lord is missing.

Meeting with the Risen Lord The two disciples return home but Mary Magdalene remains at the tomb in tears. Her initial disbelief gradually turns to faith when she sees two angels and asks them if they know where Jesus’ body has been taken. Then she sees Jesus Himself, but fails to recognize Him. She thinks He is the gardener, and when He asks why she is crying and who she is looking for, she replies: "Sir, if you have taken Him away, tell me where you have put Him and I will go and remove Him.” But Jesus says her name, "Mary" – and she recognizes Him at once: "Rabbuni!”, she says, which in Hebrew means "Master!". Jesus then tells her: "Do not cling to me because I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go and find the brothers and to tell them I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." So Mary Magdalene goes to the disciples and tells them she has seen the Lord and that He said these things to her. (cf. John 20).

She announces Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead. Mary Magdalene is the first among the women following Jesus to proclaim Him as having overcome death. She is the first to announce the joyful message of Easter. But she also proved she was among those who loved Him most when she stood at the foot of the Cross on Mount Calvary together with Mary, His Mother, and the disciple, St. John. She did not deny him or run away in fear as the other disciples did, but remained close to Him every moment, up to and including the tomb.

The Feast of Mary Magdalene Pope Francis elevated the memory of Mary Magdalene to the status of Festivity on July 22nd, 2016 in order to stress the importance of this faithful disciple of Christ.

THE MISSION Pope Francis

The Lord send us into spiritual combat. It is a fight to the death that He Himself has under-taken, and one that we too are invited to identify as our own ultimate battleground, con-scious that it is God’s war. For it is a war waged “against the enemy of human nature.” That is, in the language of St. Ignatius, the Devil or Demon. It is also the war waged by “the friend of human nature,” the Lord Jesus, who wants to win us for God and to recapitu-late in Himself all that id good in creation, in order to offer it to the Father, to the praise of His glory, as well as in the heart of the Church and of humanity itself, the Kingdom of heaven will be established, with its law of love and the Lord’s way of life: poverty, humili-ty and service. Or whether the kingdom of this world will triumph, with its laws and values of wealth, vanity, and pride. It is characteristic of Ignatius to have us contemplate the mysteries of the life of the Lord while at the same time inviting us to investigate and ask in what kind of life or in what kind of state his divine majesty wishes to make use of us.” And if we have already chosen a state of life, we should reform it for the better. This is not a question of fulfilling one’s re-sponsibilities or positions of service but of something deeper and definitive: it is a matter of my state in life. And this should not be understood as an external form but as a vital principle: In what state in life, or with what reform to my state of life, will my heart be-come more a “friend of Jesus”? How can I become more like Him, more poor, more hum-ble, and more dedicated to service? In what state of life, or through what reform to my state of life, will the love of Jesus take definitive root in me?

Living Without Calculating Costs By Venerable Madeleine Delbrel

We can’t believe simultaneously in Chance and Providence. We do in fact believe in Provi-dence, but we live and if we believed in Chance. It is from this that the inconsistencies in our lives stem; both the situations we get over-active and the situations where we are undu-ly passive…And yet we receive each morning and each day in its entirety from the hands of God. God give us a day which has been prepared for us by Him. There are no “too muches” or “not enough” in it. No part of it is neutral, no part of it is useless. It is a mas-terpiece of a day that He has just asked us to live. But we regard it as just another agenda sheet—with a number and a month upon it. We treat it casually like a sheet of paper. If we could research the history of the world and watch this day as it was being developed and formed from the beginning of time, we would grasp the unique value of one single human day. And if we had a little faith we would want to go down on our knees before the day that we experience as Christians. We are charged with an energy which is way out of proportion to the measure of our world the faith that moves: the faith that moves mountains, the hope that refuses to accept that something is impossible, the love which sets the world on fire. Each minute of our day, wherever we’re supposed to be and whatever we’re supposed to be doing, allows Christ to live through us in the midst of human beings. So there is no more question of calculating the effectiveness of our time…We make our humble measurement of the will of God.
