ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT

Rooted in the Catholic Faith, in order to build up the reign of God, the mission of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church is to live out the message of Jesus Christ by worshipping God by serving the world.

Reminder: If you would like to use your debit/credit card for your weekly offering, please stop by the church office. You can also set up automatic deposits from your bank to the church. Please consider including your St. James family when planning your will.

THE MASTER STORYTELLER

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the mas-ter storyteller. He loved to use parables as a tool for com-paring one thing to something else. In most of his parables, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing God’s essence or actions with something familiar to his listeners. In the par-able of the mustard seed, Jesus proclaims a marvelous and irrefutable truth. His small band of disciples, as insignifi-cant as they may have felt, would one day produce a mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit brought forth from those seeds. The extent of the growth of God’s kingdom cannot be pre-dicted. We must trust the work of the Master’s hand as we, the mustard plant, grow and grow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Why Register In the Church Many people attend Mass here at our church, but are not registered parishioners. This would also benefit you if you would like to have your child enrolled in next year’s Reli-gious Education Program. If you are not registered in the church, we can-not issue or sign any type of letter stating that you are a member of the parish, even if you attend Mass here. If you would like to register and re-ceive offering envelopes, you must complete our registration form. You may also use the parishioner’s updated form (green) located on the church lobby shelf for any changes to your address, email or phone number. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

On September 7th and 8th, 2018, the Diocese of Las Vegas will once again have a conference. This year's conference will be held at the South Point Hotel & Casino. This exciting and spiritual event is an opportunity to connect with our brothers and sisters from all across the Diocese. There will be inspirational speakers, presenters sharing with us information to help deepen our understanding and practice of the faith, exhibitors showing us the latest books, videos, and other materi-als concerning our Catholic religion, as well as, worship and prayer services with lively music. If you would like to attend this conference, there are registration book-lets on the counter out in the gathering space. From June 2 - July 15 the registration fee is $75. From July 16 to the conference day it's $85, so get your registration in early. Our goal is to have at least 50 parishioners from St. James attend-ing this conference. WORLD YOUTH DAY - PANAMA 2019 Attention youth 18-35 Pope Francis has invited you to come join him in Panama January 27th, 2019 for World Youth Day! The Diocese of Las Vegas is sponsoring a trip to World Youth Day from January 21st through January 28th, 2019. The cost of the trip is $3,000. Join other young adults from around the world in this once in a lifetime experience. Questions can be directed to Fr. Gene Kinney at 702-642-1154.

Join us for the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church (SEAS) Women’s Retreat on Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Parish Hall at 1811 Pueblo Vista Dr., LV, NV 89128. “A Church without women is like the Apostles without Mary.” (Pope Francis). Women throughout history have continually influenced the path of human existence, but none have left us a legacy as spirited or as powerful as the women of the Church. These women stand before the world as prophets, visionaries, activists, saints, martyrs, and heroines. But what do they say to women in the 21st century? We’ll explore the lives of various saints, biblical and modern, and discover-how their powerful witness continues to inspire women of all ages. Through prayer, music, and activity we’ll come to a deeper apprecia-tion of what it means to be a faith-filled daughter of the Church—right here, right now. Interested? Please register in the SEAS Kairos Gift Shop. Cost: $20 (includes morning hospitality and lunch),or contact Marcie Wilske at [email protected] (702-8804-8370).

Pastor’s Message Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James,

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! Many blessings to all the fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, step-fathers, foster-fathers, and any of those who have “fathered” us throughout our lives. For some of us, the image we have of God as “Father” is based on our experience of the “father-figures” in our lives. For those who have had healthy and loving relationships with their dads, it is easier to picture the first person of the Holy Trinity as a loving and life-giving God. If someone experienced a father as a strict disciplinarian, God the Father might be seen as the judge and unbending lawgiver. And anyone who had a nega-tive or hurtful relationship with their father might find it difficult to foster a trusting relationship with God.

So, on this Father’s Day, let’s be proactive and make the best of whatever our relationship with our dad’s might be. For those whose relationships with their dad’s might be loving and life-giving, it’s pretty easy to celebrate this day in a variety of ways. If a father was strict and cold, maybe it might be the right time to reach out to him and let God’s love embrace him through your initiative. But if the relationship is broken, even a prayer offered for healing might be the best you can do. On this day, at least do something.

Some of our fathers are already at home with the Lord, or on their way. Don’t forget them on this day, for they, too, may be able to love and help us in ways they might not have been able to before.

It might be a good day to take some time and see if your relation-ship with God has been affected by your relationship with your own father, or the father-figures in your life. No matter how we feel about God (based or not based on our own experiences with our dads), God can never stop loving us unconditionally. Never forget that. For no matter where we are in our own relationship with God, our Eternal Father always embraces us with tender and loving care. So, in the midst of wishing others a “Happy Father’s Day,” don’t forget to greet God with a “Happy Father’s Day” as well!

CONGRATULATIONS SR. DEBORAH LOCKWOOD! I’ve heard the many stories and testimonies about the influence Sr. Deborah had on this faith community for so many years in the past. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to be there to meet her in person dur-ing her time at St. James last weekend.

Nonetheless, CONGRATULATIONS are due to Sr. Deborah as she celebrates her Golden Jubilee in religious life! Her life and ministry is living proof of countless souls being touched by God through her. St. James the Apostle is the active and loving parish it is, due, in large part, to her ministry in Las Vegas. Thank you Sr. Deborah! May God bless you as you begin your next 50 years of ministry and love!

Victim Advocacy Number If you believe you are a victim of sexual and/or physically abused, please call our 24-hotline at 702-235-7723.

St. Peter the Apostle shall be celebrating the feast day of our Mother of Perpetual Help on Saturday, June 23rd with a no-vena and rosary at 9 in the morning; followed by Holy Mass at 10:00am. Calling all devotees to Baclaran in Henderson at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, located at 204 S BOULDER HWY, SEC of East Lake Mead Pkwy in Hender-son, NV. NO CHARGE to come to the event. However, your FREE WILL offering will allow us to continue this annual tradi-tion. We look forward to seeing many Marian devotees at our 9th Baclaran.

SOME TIME AWAY FOR FR. LIJO Upon my return, Fr. Lijo will be away for a while. He’ll be leaving on June 18 for a little necessary vacation time. Then he will be traveling to Kerala, India, first and foremost to attend to a retreat and community meetings with his Trinitarian Order. In the midst of that, Fr. Lijo will spend some time with family and friends in Kerala. You see, while Fr. Lijo is with us in the Diocese of Las Vegas, he is like a missionary who ministers away from his native land. Be-cause of this, he is only allowed to have a visit with his family every other year. So, I told Fr. Lijo to take advantage of this time in India and have some extended time with the members of his Trinitarian Order and family and friends in India. Fr. Lijo will be returning to us the first weekend in August.

Please be patient with me these next seven weeks while Fr. Lijo is gone. Even though I will have the help of some other priests for the celebration of the Masses between St. James the Apostle and St. John Neumann during this time, the pastoral ministries requir-ing the need of a priest among both parishes will fall on my shoul-ders alone until the beginning of August. Thank God I am sur-rounded by wonderful staffs at both parishes and local priests willing to lend a helping hand.

So, during these next several weeks, please remember Fr. Lijo in your prayers for safe travel, joyful time with his religious commu-nity, family and friends, and peaceful return to ministry among us. And please offer a “Hail Mary” for me once in a while as well!

Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor
