WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE SECOND PHASE OF OUR RENEWAL OF CHURCH AND CAMPUS

Thanks to all your commitment and collective efforts, and God's abundant blessings, we have successfully complet-ed the first phase of our Renewal of Church and Campus project. Accomplishing this portion of our project in less than a year is a clear testimony that together, and with God's ever present blessings, we can achieve whatever we commit to accomplish in His name. It is with this assurance and confidence that I would like us to approach the next phase. A component of this second phase has been dictated in part, by the various voices and suggestions made to me by many of you and my own conviction that it is the opportune time to pursue it. What is in this second phase then? This includes the remodel of the sanctuary area of the church and the addition of a perpetual adoration chapel as part of the overall master plan of our campus which I presented to you earlier on! Within the Church, what now remains to be done is the replacement of the carpet in the altar and choir areas with decent tiles. Tied to this is the addition of the perpetual adoration chapel. Details and estimated costs of these are in the process of being worked out with the help of our Diocese and will be presented to you when ready. While the replacement of the carpet in the altar and choir sections is easy to understand, I suspect the perpetual ad-oration chapel idea or even perpetual adoration itself may not be obvious to many of us. For this reason, I will take the liberty to briefly explain these in order for us to better appreciate what we are committing to do in this phase. I might have to do this a few more times in the future before it becomes clearer. Typically, a perpetual adoration chapel is a quiet place (chapel) where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed and adored twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Understood this way, perpetual adoration then is a Eucharistic devotion whereby members of a given parish (or other entity) unite in taking hours of adoration before the Most Blessed Sacrament, in most cases, exposed in a monstrance, both during the day and throughout the night, seven days a week. This devotion is based solidly on our belief in the real presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Why do we need a special chapel instead of the tabernacle to do perpetual adoration? This is mainly because, in the adoration chapel, the Blessed Sacrament is usually exposed in a monstrance which makes it possible to see Jesus visibly present under the appearance of the small white host in which we believe he is truly present body, soul and spirit. This visible exposition makes it much more conducive to intimacy than hidden away in the tabernacle. It is a proven fact that where perpetual adoration is embraced by a parish, enormous spiritual benefits are usually received. What are some of these benefits? After starting regular Eucharistic Adoration, many parishes have experi-enced a renewal of their community life, an increase in vocations, an increase in converts and the return of fallen-away Catholics, a new appreciation for Mass and the other sacraments, and many other spiritual benefits. Individuals also experience a renewal and strengthening of their family relationships, and a deepening of their prayer life: they come to appreciate the chance to slow down, relax, and talk to God in a quiet and peaceful setting. Dear friends, while we have achieved some of the re-modelling of our church which can physically be verified, I be-lieve we now need to move to this most important aspect – the spiritual re-modelling of each one of us. This in as-pect, though not physically verifiable and felt like the pews, never the less, defines who we are as Church, as Catho-lics and as St. James! Will you join me in achieving this objective by daily offering at least, a rosary for this intention? Jesus and I are counting on you!

Pastor’s Corner... Fr. Robert Aliunzi, A.J.
