Dear Sisters and Brothers,

One of the Bible’s first claims is that we are created in the image of God. It was God’s love and desire that produced us. Still, many of us live with a terrible sense of inferiority. We measure our-selves by the standards of our world and culture. A part of our redemption lies in seeing ourselves as God sees us, and living in the joy of who we really are.

In our first reading, Isaiah the prophet discovered that his calling from God was more than he thought. God had plans for Isaiah before he was born. He was not only to be a prophet in Israel. He was also to be a prophet to the whole world, a light to the nations, so that God’s redemptive work might extend to the ends of the earth. God has more in mind for all of us that we realize.

John’s Gospel tells us , in the words of John the Baptist, that Jesus is “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Greater than John the Baptist, Jesus is our Passover sacrifice. His baptism was an act of faithful obedience, revealing that he was indeed the Chosen One of God who came to save his people from their sin. Jesus said we are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. The psychologists suggest that we will love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Self love is not necessarily narcissism or pride. It is the proper evaluation of ourselves as children of God. The truth about us is that we are a good creation of God. Self love is a prerequisite of loving others and to find the joy of living.

2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Questions of the Week:

Question for Adults: “When have you been surprised to see goodness that you had overlooked in someone?”

Question for Children: “Who has surprised you by doing something kind for you when you did not expect it?”

FEAST OF FAITH The Greeting At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response—“And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. God’s presence transforms us. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS – January 16, 2010

God has formed each of us as His servants from the womb. He blessed us with unique gifts and He provided us with the talents and skills we would need to do His work. If we do not fulfill the unique vision that God had for us alone, who will do it? Today’s responsorial Psalm is the theme song of the good steward: "Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will." May I, too, stand ready to offer myself and my gifts in the service of God. “Now the Lord has spoken who formed me as his servant from the womb...” - Isaiah 49:5

We hear today that Paul addressed the Corinthians as, “the church of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church states we are “called to be saints.”

For what was expected from the early Christians in Corinth is expected of contemporary Christians in America. Paul even expanded his greeting to include ‘all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.”

We may think of ourselves as respectable, maybe even goo, gut “holy” and “saints”? That’s for the special people, the St. Francis of Assisi types, or the Mother Teresa sorts, if we need modern examples. But the term “saints” comes from the Latin word for holy, and the expectation that we’re supposed to be saints is one of key teachings of Vatican II. An entire chapter of Dogmatic Constitution on the Church is devoted to “The Universal Call to Holiness in the Church.” In it, the teaching is set forth that holiness, sanctity, sainthood (although probably not canonization)- whichever term you choose-is the goal for every Chris-tian, the laity no less than the clergy and the religious.

So what does it mean to be one who has been “called to be holy”? It means that we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, for we do not become holy by our own efforts alone. We have to depend upon God’s grace, won for us by Jesus, to shape our way of living. But we have to cooperate with that grace. God has so arranged the pattern of salvation that our response, our willingness to follow his leading, is also necessary.

And that’s how stewardship fits into our growth in holiness. When we respond positively to God’s grace, we find that we want to follow his will in our use of the time, the talent, and the treasure available to us. We want to spend time with God in prayer and worship. We desire to use our abilities to help others and to serve the Kingdom of God. We find we have a spiritual need to give, to share our material resources with others. And as we respond to grace by using our time, talent, and treasure for God’s sake, we grow in holiness and become – to use St. Paul’s term – saints. Copyright © 2011 www.THECATHOLICSTEWARD.com
