St. John Cantius Parish The Catholic Community of Bridesburg Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus' teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen. A PROPHET'S LOT Jeremiah loved Jerusalem and its people. He spoke the word of God to them, that they might change their evil ways and return to the Lord with prayer and supplication for deliverance from their foes. The city of Jerusalem was under siege, threatened by famine and in dire straights. The king and the people believed, as false prophets told them, that because they inhabited the holy city and held the Ark of the Covenant, no one could conquer them, and that God would save them. Jeremiah told them the opposite. He said that if they did not turn back from their unfaithfulness, they would be conquered and destroyed, and the people taken into slavery. They did not want to hear this, and plotted against Jeremiah. But God saved him from their hands, and although they were conquered and taken into slavery in Babylon, Jeremiah went with them to their fate, ever the faithful prophet. 4415 Almond Street ~ Philadelphia, PA 19137 Rectory Phone 215-535-6667 Rectory Fax: 215-535-7107 Parish Email [email protected] Parish Website www.stjohncantiusparish.org Rectory Hours Monday - Friday, 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. As I told you last week at the English Masses, my vacation came to a quick and sudden end on Tuesday, August 2nd, in Allentown, when I had the car and trailer accident. As I was passing a large truck the air flow caused by the truck made my house trailer swerve back and forth, jack-knifed, and made my car flip sideways. I thank God I wasn’t hurt. I spent one night in Lehigh Valley Hospital and came home on Wednesday. Besides having a few bumps and bruises, I consider myself very lucky. God and my guardian angel were there once again. So, for now, my vacation has ended. I did however have a wonderful time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I traveled over 1,000 miles, passed hundreds of trucks and got home safely. Things or events happen for a reason. As I said last week, we undergo difficulties and hardships in life we come to appreciate our lives even more and realize how much God loves us. I received the following note from the Hawthorne Dominican Sisters who maintain the Sacred Heart Cancer Home whom we helped last year with donations for the cancer patients there. Just wanted all of you know that you are thought of in their prayers for your outstanding generosity.

In honor of the Jubilee Year Order of Preachers

Sacred Heart Manor I am sure you noticed the cement work being done on the side of the driveway entrance between the Rectory and the School. The concrete there has been breaking up and needed to be repaired. Also, it is preparing for the installation of a mechanical gate. The gate will enable us to keep our Church grounds secure. The gates will be open for all Church services and events and closed at all other times. Tomorrow (Monday, August 15th, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This year, this feast is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but nevertheless, a Holy Day. We will have Mass on Monday at 8:00 AM in English and 7:00 PM in Polish. There is NO VIGIL MASS because this feast falls on a Monday. We hope you take the time and come to celebrate Our Lady’s Feast Day. OUR DYNAMIC CATHOLIC THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: “You don’t have to change before approaching God. In fact, you can’t change until you approach God.” A SECOND THOUGHT FOR THIS WEEK: “God is always waiting on us. Sometimes we may think we are waiting for him, but that is never true.”

Spędziłem jedną noc w Lehigh Valley Hospital i wróciłem do domu w środę. Przejechalem ponad 1000 mil, mijając setki ciężarówek i wróciłem do domu raczej bezpiecznie.

THE GREATEST PROPHET Jesus tells the disciples what they do not expect to hear. He tells them that he has not come to bring peace, but division. He prophesies that people will be divided by the power of his words, families torn by disagreements. We are seeing the same in our own country and in our Church at the present time. Paul teaches that, surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, the saints, we should keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. He endured the cross for the sake of believers, enduring its shame and pain for the sake of the reign of God. He endured opposition so that we might "not grow weary and lose heart." We have not resisted "to the point of shedding blood." So we must be brave, trust in Jesus to be telling us what we may be puzzled to hear, and walk in faith toward "the joy that [lies] before [us]."

Mission Appeal

On the weekend of Aug. 27th & 28th, a representative of the Franciscan Order of the Assumption BVM Province, with headquarters in Franklin (formerly Pulaski), Wisconsin, will be coming to our parish to speak at each Mass about the missionary activities in which they are currently engaged. This is being done in conjunction with the Missionary Cooperation Plan in which our Arch/Diocese participates. Through this plan, a Missionary is assigned to each parish to share with its people the work of his particular Religious Order in the home and/or foreign missions field. A special collection will be taken up on behalf of these efforts, and you are asked to be as generous as you can in support of such an important work in the ministry of the Church.

PREP Registration

I want to bring you up to date on the latest news regarding PREP 2016-2017. Our PREP classes will once again be held on Thursdays from 6:00PM to 7:30PM. Since we will not be using the school building we will need to hold the classes in various areas of our campus. We have over 120 children attending PREP and no one location can accommodate all of them at the same time. Our plan is to use the School Annex (the small school building across from PJPII School, next to the church), some rooms in the convent building and the room in the back of chapel (St. Joseph Hall). Once we have our children registered and have an idea of our class sizes we will be able to assign classrooms. We will also have Level K (kindergarten) available. I encourage you to register early so that we can order needed supplies and make necessary arrangements for classrooms. Please feel free to call the rectory if you have any questions.

FOR YOUR CONVIENIENCE : There will also be an evening registration on Wednesday, August 17th at the rectory from 6:30PM to 7:30PM. Registration Fee must be paid at time of registration: $80 for one child, $150 for two children and $50 for each additional child.

THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ.
