The right to life is not conditional

Pope Francis made news by revising the Catechism of the Catholic Church to say that capital punishment is “inadmissible because it is an a ack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.” This dignity persists, the revision con nues, “even a er the

commission of very serious crimes.”

By adding this language to the Catechism, the Holy Father has made official a development of church teaching that gained steam under Pope John Paul II, who repeatedly described capital punishment as virtually never acceptable, and called for an end to state-sanc oned execu ons the world over. The saintly pope stated in the catechism that modern advances in protec ng society from dangerous criminals mean that “cases in which the execu on of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not prac cally nonexistent.”

Pope Benedict con nued to advocate for the end of the death penalty and now Pope Francis has made clear that the church “works with determina on for its aboli on worldwide.” Like his predecessors, Pope Francis looks at this issue of capital punishment through the lens of the dignity of the human person and the inalienable right to life. The church has long held that “the

dignity of the human person is rooted in his or her crea on in the image and likeness of God.”

This principle of the sanc ty of human life underpinned our defense of the unborn and the sick and elderly, but now the Holy Father is making clear that it also applies to those on death row. In other words, the right to life is uncondi onal in all circumstances, and cannot be forfeited by criminal behavior. Some have reacted nega vely to this change in the catechism, arguing that it is not right to speak of the right to life in the same context when addressing abor on and capital punishment, since the moral weight of abor on and the death penalty differs greatly. Abor on, a er all, involves the taking of innocent human life.

Moreover, many people, including faithful Catholics, struggle with the dilemma that some crimes are so heinous that criminals convicted of such crimes may indeed forfeit their right to life. This response springs from compassion for the vic ms of the most barbarous crimes and a desire to restore the order of jus ce that has been so viciously violated. At a profound human level, we tend to believe that by execu ng a murderer we are somehow helping rebalance the scales of jus ce. But there is a serious flaw in that way of thinking. The real tragedy of murder is that there is no way to rebalance the scales of jus ce, no way to bring life back to those who have been killed or to restore them to their grieving families. When the state imposes the death penalty, it proclaims that taking one human life counterbalances the taking of another life. This is profoundly mistaken.

If there is any lesson we need to learn in this perilous age, it is that taking a human life in the name of retribu on does not bring jus ce or even closure, even if it may feel that way in the moment. Rather, capital punishment only con nues the cycle of violence and vengeance. The tragic truth is that nothing can restore a human life.

Pope Francis, in making this change to the catechism, is forcing us to confront the unavoidable moral ques on posed by capital punishment: Is the right to life condi onal, or is it uncondi onal? Can men and women forfeit their right to life by their behavior, or is that right irrevocably given by God? Can society — that is, we, the people — determine that the crimes commi ed by human beings supersede their intrinsic claim to life? There is no ge ng around it. The state that chooses to perform execu ons, even when there are ways to protect society, has concluded that the right to life is condi onal a er all. Such a state, even if it does not intend to do so, inevitably weakens the ability of its ci zens to defend the sacredness of human life against all the threats that imperil life in the present day. When society erases the innate value of individual lives because of crimes commi ed, it sends a signal that all human life is not sacred. When a state chooses to remove such criminals from the human family, it is nothing less than an echo of the violence done to human dignity when pro-choice advocates imply that the life developing in the womb is not “real human” life. Both conclusions assume that the right to life is con ngent, rooted not in the free and absolute gi of a sovereign and loving God, but in the discernment of rela ve worth by society.

On Wednesday, Catholics and many other Christians will cele-brate the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical de-

parture of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God. Venerable Pope Pius XII confirmed this belief about the Virgin Mary as the per-

ennial teaching of the Church when he defined it formally as a dogma of Catholic faith in 1950. The constitution also cited testimonies from the early Church fathers on the subject, and described the history of theological reflection on many Bibli-cal passages which are seen as indicating that Mary was as-sumed into heaven following her death. Although the bodily assumption of Mary is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, Catholic tradition identifies her with the “woman clothed with the sun” who is described in the 12th chapter of the Book of Revelation. Eastern Christians have also traditionally held Mary's As-sumption into heaven as an essential component of their faith. Pius XII cited several early Byzantine liturgical texts, as well as the eighth-century Arab Christian theologian St. John of Damascus, in his own authoritative definition of her as-sumption. In Eastern Christian tradition, the same feast is celebrated on the same calendar date, although typically known as the Dormition (falling asleep) of Mary. Eastern Catholic celebration of the Dormition is preceded by a two-week period of fasting which is similar to Lent.

Marytown – the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe, is located in Libertyville, IL in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Marytown is called the “Third city of the Immaculate” (after Niepokalanow, Poland and Nagasaki, Japan) and is a ministry of the Conventual Franciscans Friars of St.

Bonaventure Province. Marytown includes a Franciscan Friary, a contemporary Retreat and Conference Center, the Marytown Press – Catholic Books and Gifts, historic Chapels for liturgical life, and numerous outdoor shrines and rosary gardens.

Marytown is the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe as decreed by the U.S. Catholic Bishops. Boskiej Zielnej ( w Polsce) bądź Matki Boskiej Korzennej (w Czechach). Uroczystość ta obchodzona jest w Kościele od V wieku - na początku występowała pod nazwą Zaśnięcie lub Przejścia Najświętszej Maryi Panny,

dopiero w VII wieku w Kościele Rzymskokatolickim upowszechniła się obecna nazwa. Jest to najstarsza uroczystość maryjna i wywodzi się z przeświadczenia, że Maryja nie umarła jak zwykły człowiek, lecz została wzięta do nieba, co było nagrodą za życie wierne Bogu. Syn Boży, Jezus Chrystus, nie tylko wyniósł swoją Matkę do chwały zbawionych w niebie, ale dał nam także zapowiedź tego, co będzie również i naszym udziałem, jeśli tylko upodobnimy nasze życie do Jej życia. W krajach europejskich i w Polsce czci się Matkę Boską Wniebowziętą jako patronkę ziemi i jej bujnej roślinności. Z tą maryjną uroczystością związana jest starożytna tradycja liturgiczna, oddająca hołd Maryi wraz z poświęceniem na Jej cześć leczniczych ziół. Od IX wieku w święto Wniebowzięcia składa się Maryi ofiary płodów ziemi: zioła, warzywa, owoce i kwiaty, które symbolizują Jej duchową pełnię, jako "najdorodniejszego ziemskiego owocu" i „najpiękniejszego kwiata ludzkości”. W polskiej tradycji ludowej uroczystość w Święto Matki Bożej Zielnej liczne sanktuaria maryjne, kościoły i kaplice, wypełniają się przybyłymi wiernymi i pielgrzymami, którzy przynoszą do poświęcenia wianki zielne, bukiety kwiatów, kłosy zbóż i owoce, w szczególności w regionach wiejskich. Kiedyś ten zwyczaj był bardzo popularny, ponieważ wierzono, że pobłogosławione rzeczy nabierają mocy leczniczych. W dniu 15 sierpnia najsłynniejsze maryjne sanktuaria mają swe odpusty. Szczególnie oblegana jest przez pielgrzymów Częstochowa, a także Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, gdzie odbywają się inscenizacje Zaśnięcia Maryi oraz Jej Wniebowzięcia.

LITURGICZNE WSPOMNIENIE ŚW. MAKSYMILIANA KOLBE— wtorek, 14 sierpnia 14 sierpnia Kościół katolicki wspomina św. Maksymiliana Marię Kolbego. Rajmund Kolbe urodził się 08.01.1894 r. w Zduńskiej Woli w rodzinie tkaczy. W 1907 r. franciszkanie ze Lwowa prowadzili w Pabianicach misje. Pod wpływem ich nauk, Rajmund wraz ze swoim starszym bratem Franciszkiem,

postanowił wstąpić do franciszkanów. Po ukończeniu gimnazjum w 1912 r. rozpoczął dalszą naukę w Krakowie. Stąd ze względu na jego niezwykłe zdolności skierowano go w tym samym roku do Rzymu. 01.11.1914 r. Kolbe złożył uroczystą profesję, w czasie której obrał sobie imię Maksymilian Maria. 28.04.1918 r. Kolbe otrzymał święcenia kapłańskie. W 1919 r. wraca do Polski i w

Krakowie zaczyna wydawać „Rycerza Niepokalanej”. W roku 1927 w Teresinie pod Warszawą zakłada klasztor franciszkański Niepokalanów, gdzie wraz z ojcami nadal wydaje „Rycerza Niepokalanej” i zajmuje się działalnością misyjną. Kiedy wybucha II wojna światowa, 19.09.1939 r. Niemcy przystąpili do likwidacji Niepokalanowa, o. Kolbe wraz z współbraćmi został aresztowany i umieszczony w obozie w Amtlitz. Stąd wywieziono ich do Ostrzeszowa, gdzie zostali zwolnieni 08.12.1939 r. O. Kolbe powrócił do Niepokalanowa. 17.02.1941 r. gestapo aresztuje o. Kolbego i wywozi do Warszawy na Pawiak. 25.05.941 r. przewieziono go do obozu koncentracyjnego w Oświęcimiu, gdzie dostał numer 16 670. Pod koniec lipca 1941 r. z bloku o. Maksymiliana uciekł więzień. Oburzony komendant nakazał zwołać na plac cały blok i co dziesiątego wytypowanego przez siebie więźnia skazał na śmierć głodową, w specjalnie na to przygotowanym bunkrze. Wśród przeznaczonych na śmierć znalazł się Franciszek Gajowniczek. Smutny i nieszczęśliwy szeptał, że musi opuścić żonę i dzieci. Wtenczas stała się rzecz, która zdumiała niemieckich oprawców. Z szeregu wyszedł o. Kolbe i prosił, by jego skazano na śmierć w zamian Gajowniczka. Na pytanie kata: kim jest? odparł, że „jest katolickim kapelanem. Jest samotny, a Gajowniczek ma żonę i dzieci”. I poszedł na śmierć wraz z 9 towarzyszami do bunkru śmierci. Przyzwyczajony do głodu o. Kolbe przeżył w bunkrze dwa tygodnie bez wody i chleba. Wygłodzonego oprawcy dobili zastrzykiem z fenolu. Stało się to 14.08.1941 r. w wigilię Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny. O. Kolbe miał jedynie 47 lat. 17 pazdziernika 1971 r. papież Paweł VI ogłasza o. Maksymiliana błogosławionym, zaś do godności świętego wynosi go 10 pazdziernika 1982 r. św. Jan Paweł II. Zarówno na beatyfikacji jak i na kanonizacji był uratowany przez o. Maksymiliana Franciszek Gajowniczek, który zmarł 13 marca.1995 r. w Brzegu. Jego doczesne szczątki zgodnie z jego wolą spoczęły na cmentarzu przyklasztornym w Niepokalanowie.

STANISŁAWA KOWALKOWSKIEGO Niedziela, 26 sierpnia godz. 10.15AM Dzień 14 sierpnia 2004 roku wpisał sie w historię Klubu Podhalan i Miłosników Tatr pod patronatem Matki Boskiej Ludźmierskiej. Jest to pamiętna data, w tym dniu z ogromnym bólem przyjęliśmy wiadomość o naglej śmierci 57- letniego Prezesa Klubu: Stanisława Kowalkowskiego. Wieść

o jego śmierci wycisnęła łzy każdemu znajomemu, a w szczególności członkom klubu. Zgromadził on w krótkim czasie ludzi pochodzących z Podhala oraz tych którzy czuli pomoc działania w polskiej organizacji kościelnej z tradycjami góralskimi. Poświęcał swój wolny czas dla dobra klubu.

Zaufał w całości patronce koła Matce Boskiej Ludźmierskiej „Gaździnie Podhala”. Z nim również w niebiańskie polany odeszli członkowie klubu; Józef Zachemski, Stanisław Hajnos, Jan i Aniela Sąder, Maria Wróbel, Franciszek Szczęch, Stanisław Krupa, Małgorzata Bywalec, Janina Tymecka, Maria Ciszek.My zaś prosimy Boga by spoczywali w pokoju wiecznym. Wieczny odpoczynek racz im dać Panie. Uroczysta Msza święta w ich intencji zostanie odprawiona 26 sierpnia, o godz. 10:15 rano. On the other hand, a state that rejects in principle the execu on of even those individuals whose crimes are unspeakable bears powerful witness to the uncondi onal nature of the right to life. It asserts that every member of the human community shares a dignity that is not canceled by defects of health or age or morality. A state that refuses to use the death penalty advances a culture of life with great power of witness precisely because it protects the lives of those who have been judged least worthy of its vindica on.

Nearly a quarter-century ago, my predecessor of happy memory Cardinal Joseph Bernardin stressed the need to build a culture of life by consistently arguing for all issues related to human dignity. He understood that we live in an era when the dignity of human life is threatened. That is even truer today.

Wherever we turn, we encounter moun ng efforts to treat the lives of men and women as mere means to larger and allegedly more important goals. Global markets are developing for the sale of vital human organs by those driven, in the despera on of poverty, to risk death in order to provide food and shelter for their families. In our own land, a dominant cultural ethic asserts that the lives of immigrants are of less value because they are other, alien.

The same ethic avows that unborn children have no sanc ty when weighed against the wishes and needs of their pregnant mothers and that those in declining health are less worthy of con nued care. And in terrorism we see the chilling asser on that it is legi mate to kill innocent men and women in the service of poli cal goals, religion and revenge.

This is why the Holy Father not only says that the death penalty is inadmissible, but that the church must work for its aboli on. This means that we need to urge all elected officials and leaders to recognize not only their responsibility, but also the vested interest of society in defending the sacredness and value of every human life. This principle of the dignity of human life holds together our care for the poor, the sick, the migrant, the excluded. Our asser on that the value of a human life does not depend on a person’s quality of life or age or moral worth must apply in all cases. For if we protect the sanc ty of life for the least worthy among us, we surely witness to the need to protect the lives of those who are the most innocent, and most vulnerable.
