Dear Parishioners of St. John; I’m grateful to God for bringing together the women of St. John for the third Christ Re-news His Parish (CRHP) weekend. Thanks to the women from CRHP for preparing for this weekend. Let’s keep all the participants in our prayers. Next Sunday our second grade students will receive their First Holy Communion.

Please join me in their celebration at 10:00 am Mass. Let us continue to keep these children and their families in our prayers. This past winter we have experienced problems with our main church entrance doors. Those doors served us well since the church was built. There are issues with the locking mechanism as well as their instructional integrity. Per the recommendation of the Parish Council, this year we will be able to replace the main entrance doors. The new doors will meet all ADA standards. We will also look into updating our bathrooms and making them handicap accessible. The funds for these projects will come from To Teach Who Christ Is. As always let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Let us continue to keep each other in our prayers, Fr. Karol

YOUTH TRAVELING MASS Members of our Youth Squad joined others from Vicariate VI at a recent Traveling Youth Mass. The Mass was held on Sunday, April 15th at Corpus Christi in Chicago. A few members of our team were also asked to participate as readers and servers. Thanks to those who attend-ed and to our Youth Squad team leaders for bringing together the youth of our parish to share in this prayerful event.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP-ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE April 22, 2018 4th Sunday of Easter Today's Gospel occurs in the middle of Jesus' minis-try. At first, Jesus' words seem to be about the value of self-sacrifice in a leader. "I am the Good Shep-herd ? I will lay down my life for the sheep." The Apostles likely would have accepted these words easily enough. But then comes something more strange. "I lay down my life in order to take it up again ? I have power to lay it down and power to take it up again." Only later, when Jesus opened the Scriptures to them after his resurrection, would the Apostles understand his words. Only then would they understand why such an act was necessary for the salvation of the world. Even now, we may struggle with the necessity of Holy Week. How often do we hear complaints against the silence of God, as if He is the "hired man" who "runs away" from suffering? Jesus' life, death, and resurrection is our redemption in fact. God himself bears the full weight of sin's conse-quences. The Paschal Mystery is also a sign that happens in full view of the human experience. We have seen Jesus lay down his life. We have seen him accompany others. "I know mine and mine know me." We have seen him reach those outside the tra-ditional flock, "sheep not of this fold." Jesus is the Good Shepherd, not only in Scripture but in our dai-ly lives. While we can't experience physically walking along-side him like the Apostles did, the grace of our re-demption continues through the Church. We are shepherded by the sacraments, by faith formation, by good mentors. At the same time, we are not only the sheep. In imitating Jesus, we, too, are invited to lay down our lives for others. We can be the hands, feet, and shepherd's crook of Christ.

Pentecost Sunday - May 27 St. John Parish Celebrates

The Spirit of Diversity On Pentecost we remember the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the tremendous effect

this event had on the whole world. When the Apostles preached, people of many nations were able to hear the good news of Jesus, each in their own Language. 3.000 people were converted to Christ by Peter’s first sermon.

Though we come from different places & separate backgrounds, St. John parishioners are one family united in Jesus Christ. Pentecost is the day for the people of St. John parish to celebrate the various cultures and grow in appreciation of the diversity. When we celebrate our differences, we celebrate our solidarity.

Share a traditional dish and a Fabulous Feast

The Celebration of Diversity A Taste of St. John - Following 10:00 AM Mass

You and your family are invited to a Taste of St. John - a parish revival following 10:00 AM Mass. It’s a multi-cultural pot-luck meal to celebrate the ethnic diversity of our parish family.A Taste of St. John is free. You are asked to bring a dish which represents your ethnic background to share on the buffet table. The ethnic dish which you bring for the common table is your “entrance fee.”

Pot Luck’s are still the most creative way to have a huge meal with lots of food and a great opportunity to enjoy an ethnic, multi-cultural culinary experience. As unique an idea as the ethnic pot luck is, there are prob-ably many of you who will not want to cook or don’t have the time, you can still participate by bringing breads, desserts, or prepared foods.

The movie to be shown is "WONDER". Based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the inspiring and heartwarm-ing story of August Pullman. Born with facial differ-

ences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Most languages take the name for this fifty-day season from the Lord’s Passover: Pasqua in Italian, Pâques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King’s chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit—an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn’t take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. For good measure, they kept a pagan name for Christmas, too: Yule. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
