All Souls’ Day Celebration

On Monday, November 2nd, the church celebrates the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. There will be a 7:00 p.m. Mass on Monday evening in our church in memory of your departed family members and friends. The memorial service will take place immediately following the homily of the Mass. At that time, the names of parishioners and those buried from St. John Church since last October will be read. Upon your arrival for Mass on All Souls Day please stop by the vestibule. There you will receive a candle having the name of your deceased loved one. As the name of your loved one is read during the memorial service, you and your family will bring the candle up to the front to be lit, and placed in front of the altar by our volunteers. Then you will proceed to the side where the name of your loved one will be written in the book. If you would also like to have a photo of your loved one placed in the sacred space during November, you may bring the photo ahead of time to our office. Please be sure to put the name and phone num-ber on the back of the photo. You may also bring the photo as you come to the service on November 2nd. We invite you, your family, and anyone who wishes, to please join us in praying for and remembering our deceased loved ones. While we no longer experience their physical presence with us, our faith tells us we will one day be reunited. Life has changed for them, their earthly journey is completed, and they are at peace. In communion with them, we journey forward in faith. For any questions, clarifications, or concerns, please call the Church Office: 708-758-5098

Fr. Karol

OK, that’s it for now, I’ll see you again next year

Dear Rev. Karol Tybor, Thank you and St. John for your gracious donation to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) of $519.00. Your parish community’s tremendous generosity will go towards helping fund organiza-tions throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago that reflect our values in the public arena. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the official anti-poverty program of the U.S. Bishops which helps fund community-led organizations that address a number of issues that affect economically-distressed communities. CCHD animates our principles of Catholic Social Teaching by supporting campaigns such as affordable housing, workers’ rights, environmental sustainability, restorative justice, disability rights, and so many more. For more information on the organizations that you and the Catholic community are supporting, please visit: www.ChicagoPeaceAndJustice.org/CCHD. Again, thank you for your extremely generous contribution and we hope you continue supporting the work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. With every good wish, I remain Sincerely yours in the Lord, Joanna Arellano, Program Coordinator Catholic Relief Services

STANDARD SAVINGS TIME Next weekend, November 1st we turn our clocks back one hour Yes it is time to “fall back” and we gain an hour this time of year. Remember to change your Clocks before going to bed on Saturday evening so you are at Mass on Sunday at the correct time!! It is also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

TRUE BLINDNESS Bartimaeus caused a stir. Normally he sat by the side of the road being a “good blind beggar.” But one day Jesus passed nearby. Bartimaeus jumped up and called out to Jesus. We can imagine him turning toward the direction of the commotion and noise. Bartimaeus probably had his arms outstretched as he shouted out to the son of David. The people who knew him were embarrassed by his outburst. They tried to hush him up and get him to sit back down by the roadside. Their actions spoke volumes: “Bartimaeus, you’re not fit for Jesus.” But it was okay for them and other “sighted” people to follow Jesus. In today’s readings, we learn that true blindness is not a condition of our eyes but of our hearts. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Since this is the time for goblins and bats, HALLOWEEN spirits and ghosts and cats,

Weird happenings and witches brew, These are the things I wish for you…

May the only ghost that comes your way, Be the Holy Ghost to guide your way.

May the only spirits you chance to meet, Be the spirits of love and kindness sweet. Those are my Halloween wishes for you. May God bless you in everything you do.

It’s no trick, I just want to say, (It’s a treat to know you in every way!)

HAPP HALLOWEEN!!

ARE YOU READY FOR BUBBA???

The Chicago Bears are on the move, leaves are turning gorgeous colors, children are back in school, pumpkins are starting to appear slowly and the days and nights are getting cooler. This means that some-where “BUBBA” is getting ready to break out of hiding

and make his appearance in Saint John’s vestibule. He is looking for his feathers, so once again it is time to get ready for turkey shoot season and to “feather that bird.” BUBBA is hoping to earn all 15 of his feathers, each valued at $1,000, for a plume of $15.000. In his lifetime, BUBBA, has never reached his goal. His fervent hope is to become fully feath-ered this season. Please do whatever you can to help him reach his goal. Prizes will remain the same. First prize is $1,000, Second prize is $500, Third prize is $250, and there are 5 prizes of $100 each. Winning tickets will be drawn, in the Social Hall, Sunday, November 22nd after 10:00 Mass. Tickets are still a great bargain, $10 each or 3 for $25. Since this is our only Parish wide fundraiser, each family is asked to buy or sell $50 worth of tickets, if their circumstances permit. This is an ideal time to approach all the people whose causes you support throughout the year. Additional tickets can be obtained from the Parish Office. Thank you for your consistent support of your Parish. Tickets have be mailed out. In the past, we have had some parishioners who did not receive their tickets. If you do not receive your tickets by October 31st, please contact Eileen or Karen at the Parish Office. They are available Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:00 p..m. If you don’t get answer they are assisting other parishioners. —————————————————————

Please pray for the repose of

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the tangled but fascinating history of penance in the Church, the Irish “tariff” system helped us survive the collapse of the old system of public canonical penance and prepared the way for a new system that emerged in the twelfth century. The old form was unrepeatable, public, dealt with serious community matters, and regulated by the bishops as chief reconcilers. The new form had a more intimate setting of penitent and confessor, was extremely repeatable, and applied to everyone. The old canonical form was closed to children, who were hardly capable of the very grown‑up sins listed, or their demanding remedies. The old form was likewise closed to clerics, who were protected in a sense by the very nature of the discipline. In the new Irish form the penitent directly named sins, or answered direct questions by the priest. Some-times, the penitent would recite a long formula accusing him- or herself in a general way of all sorts of sins, even from the distant past. Next, priest and penitent together would lie prostrate before the altar and recite several of the psalms with penitential themes. Finally, the priest would pronounce a judgment, deciding what form and duration the penance should take, normally insisting that the person return for reconciliation once the penances were completed. —Rev.
