I want to thank from the bottom of my heart

all those who made our Annual Parish Carnival such a wonderful success! With the blessing of beautiful weather and the labors of our Carnival Team, there were many faces that wore the marks of joy on them this weekend. Such events are exciting and bring much enjoyment, but the work needed to prepare for them and to have them run successfully is often unknown.

Our readings this Sunday speak of an essen-tial Christian value: perseverance. St. Paul writes in his letter to Timothy: “I have run the race; I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim 4:7) What sustains us in our journey to holiness? Only the joy that comes from serving God. We learn that this joy is not only expe-rienced at the end of our life but comes every day we open our hearts to serving God. The longer we can dedicate our lives to God on earth, the greater will be our joy until it blossoms in the Kingdom of God. A newly canonized saint helps us understand this better.

This past week, Pope Francis canonized five new saints. Among them was Cardinal John Henry Newman, who began his religious career as an An-glican and then became Roman Catholic. Working mostly in university and academic settings, he com-mitted much of his reflections and spiritual journey in writing through theological treatises and ser-mons. From one of his sermons we read, “To obtain the gift of holiness is the work of a life.” In this sim-ple statement we receive a profound truth: The blessed life that God has for us develops over time as we strive to conform our lives to Christ with the help and guidance of God himself. St. John New-man continues by writing that we may be con-vinced that our accomplishing of a few good works or our attendance at Mass and prayers would make us “safe”. He responds by writing, “Be you content with nothing short of perfection; exert yourselves day by day to grow in knowledge and grace; that, if so be, you may at length attain to the presence of Almighty God.” In what way can I serve God to-day? How can I exert myself to that perfection of love, showing my love of God by loving my neighbor?

¡Quiero agradecer desde el fondo de mi corazón a todos los que hicieron de nuestro Carnaval Parroquial Anual un éxito tan maravilloso! Con la bendición de un clima hermoso y el trabajo de nuestro equipo de Carnaval, hubo muchas caras que llevaron las marcas de alegría este fin de semana. Tales eventos son emocionantes y brindan mucho gozo, pero a menudo se desconoce el trabajo nece-sario para prepararse para ellos y para que funcionen con éxito. Nuestras lecturas de este domingo hablan de un valor cristiano esencial: la perseverancia. San Pablo escribe en su carta a Timoteo: “He corrido la carrera; He guardado la fe. ”(2 Tim. 4: 7) ¿Qué nos sostiene en nues-tro camino hacia la santidad? Solo la alegría que viene de servir a Dios. Aprendemos que esta alegría no solo se ex-perimenta al final de nuestra vida, sino que llega todos los días cuando abrimos nuestros corazones para servir a Dios. Mientras más tiempo podamos dedicar nuestras vidas a Dios en la tierra, mayor será nuestro gozo hasta que florezca en el Reino de Dios. Un santo recién canonizado nos ayuda a entender esto mejor. La semana pasada, el papa Francisco canonizó a cinco nuevos santos. Entre ellos estaba el cardenal John Henry Newman, quien comenzó su carrera religiosa co-mo anglicano y luego se convirtió en católico romano. Trabajando principalmente en ambiente universitarios y académicos, dedicó gran parte de sus reflexiones y su vi-aje espiritual al escribir a través de tratados teológicos y sermones. De uno de sus sermones leemos: "Obtener el don de la santidad es la obra de una vida". En esta simple declaración recibimos una verdad profunda: la vida bendita que Dios tiene para nosotros se desarrolla con el tiempo a medida que nos esforzamos por conformar nues-tra vive para Cristo con la ayuda y la guía de Dios mis-mo. St. John Newman continúa escribiendo que podemos estar convencidos de que nuestra realización de algunas buenas obras o nuestra asistencia a la misa y las ora-ciones nos hará “seguros.” Él responde escribiendo: “Se contento con nada menos que la perfección; esforzarse día a día para crecer en conocimiento y gracia; para que, si es así, finalmente puedan alcanzar la presencia del Dios Todopoderoso.” ¿De qué manera puedo servir a Dios hoy? ¿Cómo puedo esforzarme por esa perfección del amor, mostrando mi amor a Dios amando a mi prójimo?

Commemoration of All Souls

Saturday, November 2nd is All Souls Day. We will have our regular morning Masses and a special solemn “Fauré Requiem Mass” at 7:00 p.m. when we will pray for all those that passed

away during the last year. Please plan to attend.

All Souls Novena

We will have the traditional Novena in November for all the faithful departed. If you wish to include your loved ones who have passed away in the Novena, there are special envelopes by the church entrances. In the envelope, include your dona-tion and the names of your loved ones. You can drop your envelope in the collection basket or take it to the rectory.
