The Sacred Heart of Jesus statue, which stands outside the Shanley-Sullivan Chapel, came to its new home from “old Shanley” in the summer of 2002. It had been dedicat-ed in the 1955-56 school year by then Bishop Leo Dworschak. The 1956 Reminscor school yearbook has one of the most amazing accompani-ments—a vinyl disc 45 rpm recording of sounds from the 1955-56 school year. I have listened to it many times, and I treasure the sounds of Shanley recorded for posterity.It includes then Bishop Dworschak voicing the following remarks at the dedication event:“Shanley High School was made possible by and is a continuation of Sacred Heart Acade-my. And, like the Academy, it has been placed under the patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.“At the base of the statue, we have inscribed the words of Christ: ‘I am the Way I am Truth and Life.’“In placing this shrine and inscription in a position where they are seen and read by every-one who enters, we intend to adopt those words of Our Lord as the charter of Shanley High School. They proclaim the fact that there is no reason for the existence of Shanley High School except to make known the Gospel of Christ.”Let’s broaden that statement to “there is no reason for the existence of St. John Paul II Catholic schools except to make known the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Families may choose our schools for a variety of very good reasons, but I hope we can all appreciate the ultimate reason: the Good News of Jesus Christ, Who is “the Way and the Truth and the Life.”

THE SHIELD

THE SHIELDTHE DEACONSOur nickname, “Deacons,” was adopted in the fall of 1934 for the teams of Sacred Heart Academy, forerunner of Shanley High School, and has been used ever since. It is especially fitting for Catholic schools, since it is derived from the Greek and literally means “servants” or “those who serve” (Acts 6). The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that Jesus “made Himself the ‘Deacon’ or servant of all” (CCC 1570). In light of our schools’ mission, identity, and nickname, we expect our students to excel in serving God and neighbor.

The Shanley Shield first appeared on football helmets in the fall of 1973. It was designed by Shanley art teacher Sr. Mary Virginia Deibert, PBVM with the help of her art students. The shield signifies strength. The cross of Christ is centered on the shield as it is the center of our Catholic faith. The “S” represents “Shanley” high school, named for Bishop John Shanley (1852-1909), who served as first bishop of the Fargo Catholic Diocese. Graduation from Shanley High School is the capstone for the St. John Paul II Catholic Schools student experience as Deacons.

THE SEQUELA CHRISTI

The Flame represents the Holy Spirit and the light of faith and knowledge. A lantern flame is also a traditional symbol of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founders of our Catholic schools.

St. John Paul II tells us; “at the heart of catechesis we find, in essence, a Person, the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, the only Son from the Father...full of grace and truth, who suffered and died for us and who now, after rising, is living with us forever. It is Jesus who is the way, and the truth, and the life, and Christian living consists in following Christ, the sequela Christi.”

THE “M”St. John Paul II was well known for having a deep and abiding love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. His devotion to her was evident in all that he did: his teaching, his prayer life, even his papal motto and coat of arms were dedicated to the Blessed Mother.Totus Tuus - “I totally belong to you.”

THE CROSSThe Cross represents Christ. It is the focal point of our belief: Jesus died on the cross to redeem humanity. The cross calls us to offer our sufferings and sacrifices for God, family, and neighbor. At the foot of the cross is Mary.

PRESENTATION SISTERS LEGACY SOCIETYThe Presentation Sisters Legacy Society plays a key role in preserving and advancing the Legacy of Catholic edu-cation originated in 1882 in Fargo by the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Members of this

Society have included the JPII Schools in their estate plans with a gift through their will, trust or other beneficiary designation.

This Society was established in 2012 with the $1,000,000 trust gift from Ron and Marlene Hoffart and their gener-ous support and commitment to Catholic education and the Legacy of the Presentation Sisters.
