ANNUAL REPORT 2013—2014
St. John School
In His Image Dear Friends,
In His Image, we are made…over and over we sang those words last year, reminding us that we are created in God’s Image and that we strive every day to be more like Him. Our theme for 2013-14 called us to commit each day to living as Jesus did, to mirror His actions of goodness and justice, using the gifts that He blessed us with for the benefit of others. This annual report celebrates and highlights such actions over the past year. It is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the St. John community, who in 1923, built a school intended to last for many generations. As we celebrated 90 years at St. John School, we were grateful for the legacy handed down to us. Parishioners and alumni helped educate and form children, implement strong academic programs, and maintain and add to the buildings. They spread the Good News through nine pontiffs, seventeen United States presidents, wars and recessions, good times and bad.
We continue to grow and flourish today, nurturing and solidifying the legacy for generations to come. The 90th Gala Event experienced record attendance and support of the endowment from school families, friends, parishioners, and alumni of St. John. The Endowment Fund provides for future families in need of financial assistance. Through your support, we care for our facilities ensuring they will last for many more generations of students. Your conscientious and intentional donations to the Auction Fund-A-Need, combined with matching funds from the parish and a generous grant from the Garneau-Nicon Foundation, made possible the continued replacement of windows in the main building.
We are preparing our students for the future. The class of 2013 graduated with many honors and scholarships! Family Math Night, March Mathness, and the after-school Math Clubs were hugely successful. We added a new math curriculum in the primary grades. We implemented the Next Generation Science Standards in all grades. We replaced some of our ailing laptops and purchased a new class set of iPads. And to top all that, many of our students enjoyed the fruits of the first harvest in the school vegetable garden!
Inside you will read about the musical, CYO sports, clubs, alumni success stories, and so much more!
We present this annual report with gratitude and appreciation for the huge role that you play in the continued success of St. John School. Our mission of a Christ-centered community, committed to academic excellence and moral development lives on!
Gratefully,
Bernadette O’Leary
St. John School opened on September 4, 1923 with five Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Sister Mary Francis, Sister Mary Coronata, Sister Mary Gabriel, Sister Mary Valesia and Sister Mary Justin. They welcomed 220 students that day--imagine the class size! Through the efforts of the sisters, the parishioners and the founding pastor, Reverend William Quigley, the school flourished. Since then, St. John School has continued to flourish and grow, surviving the decline of the women religious and the almost free Catholic education they offered, changing demographics, and economic downturns. Now stronger than ever, we remain committed to academic excellence and moral development in a Christ-centered community.
In celebration of this milestone, we hosted a memorable 90th anniversary party at Fremont Studios sponsored in part by St. John parents Mike & Shoshanna Osterfeld and grandparent Suzie Burke. We recon-nected with old friends in person and through video. We celebrated our history and reveled in the success of our current student body and faculty through memora-bilia and photographs. We honored our distinguished graduate Sonnet Gaertner '02 who completed her masters thesis while serving in Peru with the US Peace Corps. We had a fantastic time at the after party with the St. John Parent Band The Kids
Are Alright. An astounding $90,000 in gifts, pledges, and corporate matches* was generated that evening. This infusion into our already healthy fund put us at $675,000 and that much closer to our initial goal of $1 million dollars. A video featuring Sonnet is on our St. John School Seattle You Tube page; additional photos from the event are available on our St. John Catholic School Face Book page.
90th ANNIVERSARY St John School
PARISH + SCHOOL + COMMUNITY = Job Well Done
The school community continued to observe the founding of St. John School in 1923 with a 1920’s themed auction party— Celebrate St. John. Parents and supporters dressed up in Gatsby and flapper fashion and had a fabulous time—all while raising more than $308,000 for the school operating budget.
Over the years, St. John has been blessed by the generous donations of auction attendees to fund much-needed items such as the Mezzanine Renovation, Science Lab, 21st Century Technology Initiative, and Interactive White Boards. These items have made a direct impact on the education received by our students. Two years ago, we raised $53,000 at our auction, and combined with $70,000 from St. John Parish, we were able complete phase two of the Window Replacement Project.
For the 2014 auction, we again focused our efforts on funding the replacement of another block of windows. At a cost of $12,000 each, window replacement is a major capital investment and satisfies the very definition of Fund-A-Need. Many of our windows have been in place since 1923 and operate via rope and pulley. Many of the single pane, wood frames are splintered and drafty. Some of the glass panes are cracked or warped; others house a temporary, plastic substitute which no longer attach-es to the frame. In addition, the rusted lintels above the windows are causing cracks and bulging in the brick façade.
The 2014 project involved windows and electrical on the west side of the school. With $50,000 in capital reserves, $56,000 generated at the auction, and a $25,000 grant from the Garneau-Nicon Foundation, we were able to complete this segment of the on-going project over the summer of 2014. The Garneau-Nicon Foundation seeks to assure opportunity, encourage excellence, and assist organizations of the Greater Puget Sound Area in fulfilling their aspirations and ambitions. Check out a video about our 2014 Fund-A-Need on our You Tube account under St. John School Seattle.

Goodbye Magazine Sale, Hello Jog-a-thon For over 25 years, the beginning of the school year was marked by the annual magazine sale. After much consultation and consider-ation, parent leadership and school administration decided to test the idea of a school-wide Jog-a-thon fundraiser. Fitness, the environment, and prudent financial management all entered into the decision making process. Our first jog-a-thon was a resounding success raising over $41,000 for the school operating budget. Neighborhood sponsors included Fremont Studios,
History House, Eagle Claw Football Academy, Fleet Feet, Martino’s Smoked Meats & Neighborhood Eatery, PCC, Ballard Market, Super Jock & Jill, and Primal Screens. Ms. Whiting’s 4th grade runners joined forces to run the most miles of any class in the school, running a total of 61 miles.
Welcome Dana Barry — Kindergarten Ms. Dana Barry joined our primary grade team to teach Kindergarten. She is a graduate of Washington State University with a BA in Education. Ms. Barry believes that a “quality education is important. I teach to encourage naturally curious, flexible, confident and happy learners who are ready for whatever the world has in store. I teach for those moments when something clicks—there is nothing more rewarding than the beautiful spark of cognition in the eyes of a student.”
Ms. O’Leary helps kick off the Fall 2013 Jog-a-Thon.
Aligning with the Common Core St. John School is now fully aligned with the Core Curriculum State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts, writing, and math. Faculty spent many hours in training to integrate the standards into their practice. The Core Curriculum places greater emphasis on literacy, communication skills, informational reading, and interpreting text from many sources. Math emphasizes authentic modeling, reasoning, and problem solving. The content is not new, but students are expected to take material to a deeper and more complex level. Part of this transition included implementing a new math program in the primary grades called My Math. Each chapter has essential questions that students explore to build on their number sense and math comprehension. Sven Tice, middle school science teacher, led teachers in a review of the Next Generation Science Standards. The standards, based on A Framework for K-12 Science Education, are closely linked to the CCSS and include a requirement to ensure that writing standards are upheld as the students write about science.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Enrichment In fulfilling our goal to enrich our students’ STEM opportunities, St. John introduced Play-Well TEKnologies, a new after school and weeklong summer camp program focused on engineering for grades K-4. Students used the LEGO® building system to apply real world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer designed projects such as arch bridges, boats, motorized cars, and skyscrapers and came away understanding fundamental principles of engineering and physics.
Math Competition Success School parent Pat James coached the St. John 6th, 7th and 8th graders for the Bishop Blanchet High School Math Competition. The 8th grade math team won 1st place. 8th graders Brendan N. (1st place) and Kiera R. (2nd place) each won merit scholarships to attend Bishop Blanchet High School.
March Mathness Math was the school-wide emphasis for the entire month of March. Students were asked to complete 30 minutes of computation practice a week. They could choose the method in which they practiced, such as Mathletics, Xtra Math, flashcards, and Deck A Day. Students who completed four weeks of math fact mastery were entered to win a prize. Kindergarten through 5th grade families enjoyed a "math"nificent night of fun and games with Zeno Family Math Night. Parents and students played math games designed to enhance student math sense, and build self-confidence and skills by experiencing math in fun, engaging, accessible ways.

FAIR SHARE Update
For 24 years, St. John School has proudly offered a unique form of school funding called the Fair Share Tuition Program. Fair Share requires annual discernment and reflection on the part of administration as well as families. Fair Share continues to assure that all St. John parish children have access to a quality Catholic education regardless of their ability to pay the full cost of education. The program is reviewed regularly to maintain fiscal soundness and improve understanding among parents. A series of education nights is presented yearly to impart the principles of Fair Share as well as report current year achievements and goals and projections for the coming year.
St. John budgeted $8,475 per child as the cost per pupil for 2013-2014. Parish families are asked to pay the recommended in-parish tuition amount. If they have the means, they are encouraged to pay as much toward the actual cost of $8,475 as possible. The difference in the amount pledged and the amount needed to fund the school is made up via fundraising and development efforts. In attempting to fulfill our mission in “keeping the school accessible” and to be “a welcoming community to children who value a Catholic education, regardless of religious background,” the School Commission continues to recommend that St. John provide a limited amount of financial aid to non-parish families. This has proved to be a tremendous value to families who would otherwise not be able to attend St. John School and afford us “the richness a diverse student and school community brings.” (St. John School Mission Statement 2010)
