Help Feed the Hungry This Christmas
St. John’s Mustardseed ministry group prepares and serves
a meal to the needy once a month at Mustardseed Catholic
Worker Soup Kitchen in Worcester. The meal is 100%
funded by your donations. Each month, approximately 200
people are given a hot meal in a welcoming environment
thanks to your generosity. Please help us make this month’s
meal a special one! Collection boxes are in the back of
church this weekend. Checks may be made out to St.
John’s/Mustardseed and put in the boxes or mailed to
St. John’s Parish Office, 20 Church St., Hopkinton.
The Giving Tree–Global Mission Apostolate
The Giving Tree is a wonderful Advent tradition here at St.
John’s. This year’s gifts will support the poor in Africa, Haiti,
as well as the homeless here in Worcester. A document
describing all the missions and gift designations is located
on the table with the Giving Tree at the back of the church.
Gifts may be brought through January 2
nd
. Gifts for The
Mustard Seed are preferred by Friday, December 22nd to
allow for delivery before Christmas, although donations will
still be happily accepted after that time.
FREE GIFT FOR ALL PARISHIONERS
That gift is a FREE subscription to FORMED.ORG, a
wonderful website that has been called a “Catholic Netflix.”
FORMED has inspiring movies and video-based studies,
audio presentations and e-books from the Church's most
compelling speakers and authors. Would like to grow in your
relationship with Jesus Christ? Do you know someone who
has fallen away from the Church, perhaps a friend, a family
member, a co-worker, and you want reach them but you just
don’t know how to? This is why our parish has invested in
FORMED.ORG so that each of us might grow in our
relationship with Jesus Christ and in our desire to share our
Faith with others, especially those closest to us. With your
free access to FORMED, 24/7 on your television, phone,
laptop, ipad, or Kindle, you can: prepare for Mass each week
by watching an insightful five-minute video on the Sunday
readings; enjoy movies as a family that are both nourishing

A JESSE TREE
“...a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and
from its roots a bud shall blossom.” Isaiah11:1
The sixth grade students and their teachers researched
scripture passages from the bible to make ornaments that
decorated bare branches in order to create the “family tree of
Jesus.” Be sure to take notice of it when you are in the Par-
ish Center.
WEATHER NOTICE
Any time the Hopkinton Public School District can-
cels school due to weather conditions, St. John’s
Religious Education Classes will also be canceled.
Lost & Found
There is a box in the Parish Center hallway with items that have
been left over the past few months. Please check for any items
that may belong to you. All items still there on 12/20 will be do-
nated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

the name, location, and Mass schedule of the nearest Cath-
olic church anywhere in America.
PURGATORY CORNER
“Of course I pray for the dead. At our age many of those we
love are dead. What sort of intercourse with God could I have
if what I love best were unmentionable to Him? I believe in
purgatory. Our souls demand purgatory, don’t they?”
—C.S. Lewis, lay theologian, Christian apologist, author
“Enter into purgatory often, because they need you there.”

Love Should Not Die at Death
DECEMBER 17, 2017
CROSS ROADS by Deacon Tony
Isaiah 61:1-2, 10-11; Luke 1:46-50, 53-54;
1Thessalonians 5:16-24; John 1:6-8, 19-28
There is more good news in all of today’s scripture readings.
In Isaiah, a new age is coming when there will be liberty to
captives and release of prisoners, a time when peace will
spring up, like the plants of the earth spring forth at the proper
time. In Luke, Mary, in her Magnificat speaks of herself as a
lowly servant who by the grace of God is called upon to do
great things, to be the living Tabernacle of the Son of God,
proclaiming a reversal of fortunes for many, that the hungry
are to be filled with good things, and the coming of a reign of
mercy. In Thessalonians, Paul urges that we pray always,
giving thanks for EVERYTHING [our crosses included], so
that we should be found blameless. In John’s Gospel, John
the Baptist demonstrates that he knows who he is, who he is
not, and what he is called to do: to clear the way for one
greater than he, and to bear witness to the True Light. For
doing so, the Baptist is interrogated in a manner that reflects
how Jesus, who was sent to bring forgiveness and salvation
to all, would be interrogated. Isaiah, Mary, John the Baptist,
and Jesus were all sent. They all had a mission. Irrespective
of the crosses they all would bear, they all said yes. We too
are sent; and if we use our free wills to say yes, we too will
face our inevitable crosses. Each of us is called, in a manner
unique to each of us, to proclaim the good news of salvation
by everything we say and do, thus making a prayer of our
lives. Advent is a great time to reflect on our respective
missions, and to ask for the grace to discern what each of us
is called by God to do, on which roads we are to follow as we
go through the different phases of our earthly lives. As I am as
much in need of such discernment, there is a prayer that
came to me spontaneously about four years ago, which I say
several times per day, particularly when I am feeling unsure of
myself. I offer it to you. “Lord, guide me on the road you want
me to follow. Give me the light with which to see it, and the
courage to follow it3Amen.”
