Dear Brothers and Sisters, I share with you this : Two of today’s readings take us up a mountain. Mountains are sacred places in the scriptures. Moses meets the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob on Mt. Sinai. Elijah has an experience of this same life-giving God on Mt. Horeb. Today, Abraham goes up Mt. Moriah in obedience to God’s command to “take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love” (Genesis 22:2) and offer him there as a holocaust.

It is hard to get past this reading today and focus only on the story of the Transfiguration. This story of God testing Abra-ham to see if Abraham will obey is a story of great anguish. “See” is an important word here: Moriah means “the place of seeing.” Abraham responds to Isaac’s question about a victim, saying God will provide, a word rooted in the Latin word for seeing. God will see to it that there is a victim, just as God will see that Abraham is obedient in all things.

Seeing also takes place on Mt. Tabor. Peter, James, and John see Jesus in glory, his clothes dazzlingly white; they see him speaking with Moses and Elijah, representing the law and the prophets; and they see a cloud overshadowing them, and hear a voice calling for their obedience: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him” (Mark 9:7).

With them, we are invited to see Jesus as the beloved Son whom the Father “did not spare . . . but handed over for us all,” as Paul reminds us (Romans 8:32). The mystery of the Cross and Resurrection is an invitation to see God’s love for all God’s beloved children and trust in it.

Living God’s Word God of Abraham and Sarah, of Isaac and Rebekah, of Jacob and Rachel, God and Father of our Lord, give us a glimpse of the glory that you have prepared for all who trust in you and remain faithful to you. Strengthen us to walk through any darkness that may threaten our ability to believe. Dos de las lecturas de hoy nos llevan a una montaña. En las Escrituras las montañas son lugares sagrados. Moisés se en-cuentra con el Dios de Abrahán, Isaac y Jacob en el monte Sinaí. Elías tiene una experiencia de este mismo Dios dador de vida en el monte Horeb. Hoy Abrahán sube a al monte de Moria obedeciendo el mandato de Dios, que le dice: “toma a tu hijo único, a tu querido Isaac” (Génesis 22:2) y ofrécemelo en sacrificio.

Es difícil ignorar esta lectura de hoy y enfocarnos sólo en el relato de la Transfiguración. Esta historia de Dios probando a Abrahán para ver si éste obedecería es una historia de gran angustia. “Ver” es una palabra importante aquí, ya que Moria significa “el lugar donde se ve”. Cuando Isaac le pregunta a Abrahán acerca de la víctima, éste le responde que Dios pro-veerá, una palabra cuya raíz latina es ver. Dios le hará ver la víctima a Abrahán, igualmente que Dios verá que Abrahán permanece obediente a todo.

También en el monte Tabor Pedro, Santiago y Juan ven a Jesús glorificado y sus ropas con una blancura deslumbrante; lo ven hablando con Moisés y Elías, quienes representan la ley y los profetas; también ven una nube que los cubre y escu-chan una voz que los llama a obedecer: “Éste es mi Hijo amado; escúchenlo” (Marcos 9:7).

Junto a ellos nosotros somos invitados a ver a Jesús como el Hijo amado del Padre “que no perdonó a su propio Hijo, an-tes bien lo entregó a la muerte por nosotros”, como nos recuerda san Pablo (Romanos 8:32). El misterio de la cruz y la resurrección es una invitación para ver el amor de Dios por todos sus hijos e hijas y confiar en ese amor.

Vivamos la Palabra de Dios Dios de Abrahán y Sara, de Isaac y Rebeca, de Jacob y Raquel; Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, danos un vis-lumbre de la gloria que has preparado para todos los que confían en ti y permanecen fieles. Fortalécenos para poder cami-nar en medio de la oscuridad que pudiera amenazar nuestra habilidad para creer.

Bilingual Stations will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Fridays during Lent, beginning on February

16th through March 23rd.

Everyone is invited to attend weekly. Specific ministries or groups, both English and Spanish, have been assigned to lead each week. El Via-Crucis (Bilingüe) se rezará a las 7:00 p.m. los viernes durante la Cuaresma, desde el 16 de febrero hasta el 23 de marzo.

Todos están invitados a asistir semanalmente. Se han asignado ministerios o grupos específicos, tanto en inglés como en español, para que sean los líderes cada semana.

We are very proud of our young scientists that represented St. John at the Dio-cese of Oakland Science Fair at St. Joseph of Notre Dame! The science fair was filled with brilliant minds and amazing science fair projects. Among these were Isabella D, Natalia V, Emiliano C, Kyle H, Joshua H, and Jacob H. These students did an excellent job competing against students from the schools within our diocese. Isabella and Natalia received third place scores while Emiliano, Kyle, Jacob and Josh placed second. Excellent job Shamrocks! Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros jóvenes científicos que representaron a San Juan en la Feria de Ciencias de la Diócesis de Oakland en St. Joseph of Notre Dame. La feria de ciencias estuvo llena de mentes brillantes y sorprendentes proyectos de feria de ciencias. Entre estos se encontraban Isabella D, Natalia V, Emiliano C, Kyle H, Joshua H y Jacob H. Estos estudiantes hicieron un ex-celente trabajo compitiendo contra estudiantes de las escuelas de nuestra dióce-sis. Isabella y Natalia recibieron tercer lugar, mientras que Emiliano, Kyle, Jacob y Josh quedaron en segundo lugar. Excelente trabajo Shamrocks!
