August 4, 2019 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKThe readings for this Sunday force us to take a closer look at the whole concept of success.  In the Gospel reading, the man is convinced that he is a success because he is a rich farmer.  What should he do now that he has succeeded in harvesting more grain than he can store?  Build another silo, of course.  The basis of his success is his grain.  When he suddenly dies, his success remains here, and he goes on to God empty handed.   The whole mindset that success is predicated on salary is based on a fallacy that was very clear to the author of the first reading.  He is sometimes called Qoheleth, in the Old Testament book called Ecclesiastes. “Vanity of vanities,” says Qoheleth, “All is vanity.”  Many times one flatters oneself, incorrectly, by viewing him/herself successful by his or her appearance, achievements, titles and possessions.  Our scripture readings remind us that it is better to grow rich in the sight of God.  A person is on the road to success if he or she can draw closer to God and attract others to do likewise.   Success is predicated on how each of us is becoming more and more the reflection of God we were created to be. Success is predicated on our ability to assume the person of Jesus Christ. Success is not a present reality; it is a goal, the goal of Christian life.  The goal is reached; the life is successful, when every aspect of life reflects the person of Jesus Christ.  That is success.   All else is vanity.   Mission Collection:  Next weekend, Rev. Chet Artysiewicz, a member of Glenmary Home Missioners, will speak at every Mass and take a collection for the Missions.  Father Chet is a native Wilmingtonian and has ministered in the Glenmary Missions for several decades.  We welcome him next weekend.

BUILDING THE CHURCH IN MISSION LAND, USA The work of the GLENMARY HOME MISSIONERS is the subject of next weekend’s Mission Awareness presentation. Father Chet Artysiewicz of the Glenmary Home Missioners will speak at our Masses, telling us about the missionary work his Society is doing in serving the spiritual and material needs of people right here in the United States! This collection for Glenmary Home Missioners marks the annual Mission Awareness presentation promoted by the Archdiocesan Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Hundreds of U.S. counties do not have a resident priest, and in many of these counties the Catholic Church is not present. That means no celebration of the Eucharist, no sacraments, not even a parish community in which to find fellowship and support. Glenmary Home Missioners are working hard to fill the void—to bring the love of Jesus and His Church to the home missions in Appalachia and the South.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to hear of the Glenmary apostolate in Appalachia and the South and to offer our prayers and financial support for their important ministry in the Church. Please be generous.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FORMATIONOur Summer Religious Education Intensive Program was  a huge success. We hosted 215 children from 1st grade through 8th grade. Each student learned and grew in the understanding of their faith and our religion. We are very grateful that this program was blessed by so many young children eager to learn and share their faith. As well, our community was greatly blessed to

have 15 adults teaching and by the 16 teen helpers. All our teaching staff shared their talent and treasure to prepare and form our youth disciples as they move forward on the journey of faith. Please see the picture of our first graders with their “Tongues of Fire” hats. All the students were filled with the passionate gift of love and curiosity. We look forward to welcoming back all our children next year to our program. A special thank you is extended to Miss Ballintyn for all her behind the scenes work to ensure that we were ready each and every day. Also, a note of gratitude to Chick-Fil-A for their hard work in fulfilling the orders for the children on the dates that they ordered lunch. We are blessed by all the partnerships we have both in our community and by those businesses so willing to help us. God bless all our families as they continue to enjoy their summer.

INSPIRE

God bless our newly Baptized!

Sophie Elle Lennon Rowan Knox Oleksy Paxton Rossi Ruth

May our little ones who were baptized be blessed by our parishioners' prayers and good works.  May they continue to grow in their love for God.

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.  May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Marriage Moments: Let's face it, all of us are vain to some extent. We want to look good to others. Perhaps one of the few people who will give us honest feedback about our faults is your spouse. Share one weakness that you observe in your beloved today, but balance it with one thing that makes you proud of your beloved. Humbly accept both.

Parenting Pointers:Usually people don't lie because they are bad, evil people but rather because they are afraid or want to protect themselves. Talk with your family about whether there is a time when a lie is acceptable? By Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

If simplicity of life and the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience especially attract you, discover that life as a priest, deacon, sister or brother. Call Fr. Norm Carroll 302-573-3113 [email protected].

Pray for Vocations: That all those now discerning their vocation will be attentive in prayer and active in their response to Jesus the Eternal Word who calls them.

We pray to the Lord.

Focusing on our Young People Hello! My name is Luke Duchemin. I graduated from St. John the Beloved '10, Saint Mark's '14, and Duke University '18. After spending 8 months in religious formation with the Conventual Franciscans, the Lord has called me to serve full-time as a college campus missionary with FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. On August 16th, I will head to the University of Connecticut to lead students in bible study, to walk with them in 1:1 discipleship mentoring, and to engage the new evangelization on campus. Our goal is simple: to draw others into relationship with Jesus

Christ and to share with them the beauty of the Catholic Church.

I need your help in order to reach this generation of college students. If you are interested in learning more about my story and this mission please contact me at 302-220-3390 or [email protected]. If you feel capable and called to join me as a monthly mission partner committed to financial support you can access my support page here: https://www.focus.org/missionaries/luke-duchemin.

May God bless you! Peace!

An Note From Your Friends at Outreach:

We hope everyone is having a happy and healthy summer.  We wanted to let you know that we continue to flourish in our new location at Community of Christ Church and that we are deeply appreciative of your continued support of this vital ministry.

Our partnerships and services have flourished as well in our new location.  We have begun offering Saturday hours for those in need that are unable to come see us during the week. We have partnered with St. Barnabas Episcopal and Red Clay Creek Presbyterian to staff these Saturdays throughout the summer and we look forward to continuing that in the Fall, making this a truly ecumenical ministry to serve the community.

We have also begun offering English as a Second Language on Saturdays as well as partnering with Friendship House throughout the week.

We will have more exciting opportunities to let you know about at the end of the summer.  Please keep us in your prayers and consider a donation of food and/or clothing to allow us to continue to help those most in need.

Visit SJBDE.org/outreach to view our hours of operations and learn more.

GROWING WITH THE GOSPEL

St John the Beloved Parish Students who attend public and private schools are invited to receive their Faith Formation through our parish RE program which consists of class study and preparation for the reception of the sacraments. Click here for more information about religious education formation at St John the Beloved Parish and to register your child/ grandchild to attend one of our Tuesday evening programs this fall.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK. . . How preoccupied and anxious are you over preserving and maintaining a particular standard of wealth? It is easy to develop an unhealthy relationship with our possessions and invest ourselves more in their protection and growth than in our relationship with God. Greed can overtake us, often without our immediate notice. Anxiety of heart can find us living more with sorrow and grief than with freedom and joy. We can never allow things to replace God, and we always have to keep our possessions and wealth in proper perspective. Once they begin to control us, we have a problem. Anxiety and worry can become our greatest sins. There is a joyful life to be discovered when we discover true faith!

Celebrating St. Dominic On August 8th, we celebrate a burning heart and a radical life! Dominic Guzman was born in 1170 to a Spanish noble family. From a young age, Dominic had a sense of Gospel values. A famine struck the country when Dominic was a university student. He sold his clothes, his furniture, and even his manuscripts to buy food for the poor. Dominic also attempted (twice!) to sell himself into slavery as barter for the freedom of others. He became a monk and was commissioned by the Pope to preach throughout southern France, where false Christian teachings had taken root. He founded a house for authentic Catholic education, which would become the first location of his new order - the Order of Preachers, now known by the title Dominicans. Dominic and his followers traveled throughout Europe preaching, teaching, and calling people back to a life of conversion, prayer, and virtue. St. Dominic, pray for us!

"Don’t lose heart! I will never forsake you! My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God" (Our Lady of Fatima, June 13, 1917). Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!

On August 15 we celebrate The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Holy Day of Obligation. Our Mass schedule for the solemnity is Wednesday, August 14 at 6:30 pm (Vigil) and Thursday, August 15 at 6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., and 6:30 pm.
