    ST. JOHN THE DIVINE

    Dear Friends,

One of the Great Stories of our Anglican tradition tells the beautiful interweaving of Celtic and Benedictine spiritualities, very early in our history. St. Aidan brought the Celtic strand from Iona in Scotland to northern England in 635 (St. Columba of Ireland had planted a missionary base on Iona seventy years earlier). Aidan established another base on Lindisfarne ("Holy Island") just off the coast of northern England. He and his brother-monks fanned out, spreading the Gospel southward, on foot (Aidan gave away the horse the King of Northumbria had donated - too fancy for a missionary!).

Just as Celtic Christianity was spreading southward in England during the mid-600s, a contrasting tradition of Benedictine spirituality reached northward. St. Augustine of Kent had arrived in Canterbury in 597, planting a monastery that later grew into Canterbury Cathedral. Missionaries began to spread north. Celtic and Benedictine spiritualities differed on some points (like the dating of Easter). The King of Northumbria decided to try and resolve the differences. He called a meeting at Whitby, where St. Hilda presided over a monastery of both women and men. The "Synod of Whitby" met in 664.

The result was not a victory for either side (though King Oswy did opt for the Roman dating of Easter). Rather, Celtic and Benedictine Christianities became intertwined, producing such artistic masterpieces as the "Lindisfarne Gospels." From the very earliest days of our history, Anglican Christianity has been a fruitful combination of different (but equally Biblical) traditions like these.

Come join me on the trail of this story in northern England and Scotland. Our journey will include Edinburgh, The Scottish Border Country, Lindisfarne, The Farne Islands, Durham, Jarrow, Whitby, and York. We will visit the sites that bring this great story to life as well as we travel through some of Britain's most exquisite countryside.

I hope you can join us! With warmest wishes,

    In Christ,

    Les Fairfield

Day 1, Friday, June 8th, 2018 Depart from your home airport. Dinner aloft.

    Day 2, Saturday, June 9th

Arrive in Edinburgh and transfer to your hotel in Edinburgh. Rest this afternoon before gathering for a welcome reception and dinner. Radisson Blu Edinburgh, (R,D)

Day 3, Sunday, June 10th Today we have a guided tour of Edinburgh. As Edinburgh began to outgrow its old, medieval city, town planners

began building a ‘new” city in the current Georgian style of the day. Here you will find graceful crescents where sit the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Mary among other 18th century buildings. Prince’s Street is the dividing line between this and the old city, where you find the Castle at its top and the Palace of Holyrood at its lower end. On this mile is the official ‘High Kirk’ of Scotland- St. Giles, where

John Knox preached and railed against “the monstrous regiment of women” wherein he referred to Mary, Queen of Scots. There is much to see along this Royal Mile - the Palace of Holyrood (where the Queen stays when she visits Edinburgh) is overlooked by the Mound called Arthur’s Seat, a popular place for those interested in hill walking. Dinner is free for you to experience Edinburgh’s restaurants. Radisson Blu Edinburgh, (B,L)

Day 4, Monday, June 11 Today we follow the trail of St. Aidan to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, where Aidan set up a missionary

base in 635 AD. The King of Northumbria had summoned him from Iona in western Scotland, to bring Celtic Christianity to the north of England. Lindisfarne is one of the "thin places" of the Christian world, where heaven and earth seem to bend toward each other. Some years after Aidan's death, St. Cuthbert became abbot of the community, which produced the miraculous "Lindisfarne Gospels" (now in the British Library) in his honor. St. Mary's Priory was destroyed during the Reformation, but its ruins recall centuries of devotion in this place.

After a day of rest and reflection on Holy Island, we make our way to Doxford Hall on the mainland for dinner, overnight and breakfast.Doxford Hall, (B,L,D)

Day 5, Tuesday, June 12th Today we continue the story of Celtic Christianity in Northern England, as we visit Bamburgh, the site of Aidan's first church, before he took up King Oswald's gift of Holy Island. The present 12th century parish church of St.

Aidan's, Bamburgh contains a wooden wall from Aidan's own humble construction. Next we visit Bamburgh Castle, seat of the ancient Kings of Northumbria, from which we enjoy a spectacular view of Lindisfarne and the nearby Farne Islands where St. Cuthbert retired to pray. After lunch we go by coach to nearby Seahouses, where we board a boat to tour the Farnes, and to visit the 12th century church on the site of Cuthbert's cell. The Farnes are now a world-famous sanctuary for migratory birds.

After docking again at Seahouses, we return by coach to the Doxford Hall for dinner, overnight and breakfast.Doxford Hall, (B,D)

Day 6, Wednesday, June 13th Today we recall the story of Benedictine. Christianity in northern England, which would blend with the earlier Celtic Christianity there to birth a Golden Age of spirituality, art and literature in England in the 700s AD.

We drive by coach southward to Jarrow, on the outskirts of the bustling city of Newcastle-on-Tyne. In the 670s the Northumbrian nobleman Benedict Biscop visited Rome, where he was impressed by Benedictine monasticism and resolved to bring that tradition of community life

back to England. After planting a Benedictine house at nearby Wearmouth, Benedict Biscop received a grant of land at Jarrow in 681, from the reigning King Egfrith of Northumbria. Here at Jarrow the famous scholar Bede lived, from boyhood until his death in 735. Thanks to donkey-trains carrying books from Rome across France to England, Jarrow held the largest library north of the Alps at that time. Bede was the Father of English History, the most learned man in the Western World in the 8th century. Parts of his monastery survive as the chancel of St. Paul's parish church, still in use today.

After lunch we carry on to Durham, where we tour the magnificent cathedral, the foremost example of Norman architecture in England. Both Cuthbert and Bede are

buried in the cathedral, whose enormous nave and sturdy pillars exhibit the confidence of the Normans who ruled England after William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings in 1066. After Evensong at 5:15, you will have the opportunity to have dinner in the town of Durham! Marriott Durham, (B,L)

Day 7, Thursday, June 14 We leave Durham after breakfast this morning, making our way over the beautiful North Yorkshire moors to the port of Whitby. Here the famous "Synod of Whitby" took place in 664, hosted by St. Hilda, head of a community of monks and nuns there. Roman Christianity was beginning to gain favor in Northumbria in the 660s. Its structured and regular community life contrasted in some ways (such as the dating of Easter) with the Celtic Christians

on Lindisfarne. King Oswy of Northumbria resolved to settle the matter in 664. Abbess Hilda offered to host the meeting. Although Oswy decided in favor of Rome, and a few Celtic monks moved back to Ireland in protest, Whitby did not mark a "Roman victory." In fact, both Celtic and Roman (or Benedictine) Christianity continued to flourish

in the north of England. A revival of art (especially the Lindisfarne Gospels) and of literature (the great Saxon epic Beowulf) ensued in the next century, symbolized by Bede and his scholarly works at Jarrow.

After visiting Whitby Abbey and its interpretive center, we make our way southward across the Yorkshire moors to the city of York, to our hotel for dinner, overnight and breakfast.DoubleTree York, (B)

Day 8, Friday, June 15th We spend the entire day in York - touring its magnificent cathedral ("York Minster") and one or two of its historic churches. We will also have time for shopping in the

tiny medieval streets. We may also visit the Jorvik Viking Center, the famous Yorkshire Museum with its Roman and Viking exhibits, or the nearby Railway Museum as we may choose. At the end of the afternoon we return to York Minster for Evensong, then to Middlethorpe Hall for dinner, where we are hopefully joined by the Archbishop of York. DoubleTree York, (B)
