Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you know, Pope Francis issued his encyclical on the environment, “Laudato Si” (“Praise to You”). A brief summary is included as an insert in today’s bulletin. If you want to read the entire encyclical, go to the following website to read or print: http://www.catholicclimatecovenant.org/LiteratureRetrieve.aspx?ID=137795. A second insert contains statements from Archbishop Myers on the Encyclical as well as on the shooting at the A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

As mentioned last weekend, Fr. Paul Walsman, OFM will be speaking at all our Masses today on behalf of Food for the Poor. This ministry seeks out the poorest of the poor in 16 different countries, aiding some of the most destitute, feeding the hungry, building water wells for thirsty villages, building houses for the homeless, aiding the impoverished elderly, raising orphans in a loving atmosphere of Christian discipline, healing the sick, or overcoming illiteracy by supporting schools. Father will explain how you may once again become involved in this ministry, which has visited our parish in the past.

+++

Thank you to all those who continue to make their pledges to our “We Are Living Stones” Capital Campaign. Your pledges toward our goal of $1,066,452 now total $715,086.00. Based on the payments to date, we may expect at least $39,975.65 to come back to us in October (more by then as your payments are made, and some each quarter after that). This will help us to begin to cover the costs of replacing the two heating/cooling units for Conlon Hall (which was done this week for $50,785.00) and the Church boiler, estimated between $60,000.00 and $80,000.00. So, if you have not made a pledge, payable over four years, please consider doing so now. Pledges may be dropped off at the rectory, placed in the collection basket, or sent directly to the Archdiocese. I count on each family to make some contribution to our parish and our Archdiocese through this Campaign.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

In the Law of Moses, menstruation was understood to bring on “ritual impurity” that, among other things, made women unable to participate in the religious life of the community until one had stopped menstruating and undergone a ritual of purification. Moreover, this ritual impurity was thought to be “contagious,” so that anyone who touched a menstruating woman was also thought to be ritually impure. So the woman in Mark’s Gospel who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years had been excluded from the life of her community and from human contact for that entire period of time. In addition to her physical suffering, what we might call her “social suffering” must have been immense. She was literally untouchable.

When she summoned the courage to touch Jesus, he too should have become ritually impure. But instead of her impurity being transferred to Jesus, his healing power was transferred to her and she was healed. The logic of impurity’s “contagion” was reversed. Just as Mark uses Jesus’ stilling of the storm to show his divine power over nature, here he uses the story of Jesus’ healing of the woman with the hemorrhage, and the story of the healing of the syngagoue official’s daughter that surrounds it, to show Jesus’ power over death, sickness, and exclusion.

In the book of Wisdom, we read that death entered the world through the envy of the devil. Death too is like a contagion that spreads throughout the world and has infected us all. Just as Jesus reverses the normal course of ritual contagion in his healing of the woman with the hemorrhage, so too he reverses the contagion of death in his passion and resurrection. He lets death grasp the edge of his cloak, so to speak, but rather than being “infected” with death, he transforms death into life. As Paul says in the Second Letter to the Corinthians, Christ gave up the riches of immortality and shared our death, so that he could enrich us who were dead in our sins.

“Jesus, we see you passing by and we yearn for your healing. Give us the courage to reach out and touch the hem of your cloak. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“...as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality.” 2 Corinthians 8: 14

Not only are we responsible for our own lives, but we are responsible for the lives of those around us. Not only is it important that we grow, nurture and share our gfits, but we should teach our children this same lesson and encourage others to do the same.
