About St. John’s 9

St. John’s Parish Visitor

It’s All of Us …………. Tall and elegant, she stands watch over the city. The stonework laid so meticulously speaks

of an era of hard work without the benefit of cranes. The stained glass glimmers in

testament to the tedious workmanship of European artists. The enormous ceiling trusses

hanging high above; the detailing in the carved wood of the

altar; the sun moving through the windows – they all beckon

for us to come in, for us to come closer, for us to stop if just

for a moment.

St. John’s is stunning. Our guests tell us, “It’s so …..

beautiful.” St. John’s IS beautiful; it reaches all of the senses.

The architecture and design make it easily identifiable as

“Episcopalian” and for almost 150 years St. John’s has

steadfastly stood in glory.

But ……… what if no one came?

What if none of us were here?

What if there were no congregation?

What would St. John’s be?

Without the people, without us, without all of us, St. John’s is just a building. A consecrated

building to be sure, but nevertheless an inanimate building. Buildings can be beautiful but they

don’t “do” anything. St. John’s is more than a building – it is People. St. John’s is People -

ALL of us – trying to do the work God set out for us to do, trying to do what Jesus

commanded us to do.

Everyday.

In some way.

To reach out beyond ourselves.

Consider historian Katie Pott’s monthly articles that delve into our past. She brings us

stories about The People - to remind us of the work they did, the projects they had, the

people they served. The yellowing photographs are of people playing and working and

serving together - reminders that St. John’s has always been more than a building.

The heart of St. John’s is our Time and our Talents. Every day St. John’s is in the business

of reaching out to those who need us – to those in this parish, and to those out in the

community. It is the WORK we do that brings Glory to this place.

It is the time we spend visiting the sick, checking on each other, taking a meal to a family,

sending cards, teaching a class, knitting a hat. It is the typing, the cleaning; the mowing and

trimming; the reading of the lessons. It is serving as acolyte or on Altar Guild. It is delivering

the flowers to someone to brighten their day, fixing a sandwich for someone who might not

eat that day, bringing a book for those who long to learn. It is offering a smile, a kind word, a

handshake, a hug. These are our Living Pledges.

Our visitors are right. St. John’s IS beautiful. Our greatest beauty is found in the words and

actions of all of us as we each serve as stewards of the special gifts God has given each of us.

Thank you all for being the beauty of St. John’s.

Sunday Morning Christian Formation To Meet October 2, 9 & 16 Come to the library on designated Sunday mornings from 9:15 - 10:10 AM for exploration of various aspects of living

life as a Christian in today's world. Fr. Ted Curtis will open with a short “lecturette,” followed by group discussion.

October 2: The Year of the Gospel of Luke: We are in Eucharistic Lectionary Cycle C in which we hear in

Sunday worship Luke's account of the life and ministry of Jesus. Who was he? What were the points he was getting

across? How did he handle the tradition of Jesus handed to him?

October 9: The Religious Imagination: Let's get beyond the tired fight that the scriptures should be read either

literally or figuratively -- a presentation and discussion of the role of imagination in the life and witness of the Church.

October 16: The Language of Worship: A look into the words we say when we think of God, address God,

worship God.

Knitting Ministry Invites Community to Participate Almost 200 homeless and precariously-housed souls gather each Saturday at St. John’s for the Sandwich

ministry. Our Knit with Knowledge group, which meets on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm, set a goal to create

warm, hand-knit & -crochet items to give our guests as the cold weather arrives. Now St. John’s will extend

the invitation to crafters around the city to join us in making scarves for these individuals in a drive called

SoulScarves. Other churches and yarn shops will be encouraged to promote the idea within their circle, and

to drop off their handmade items to St. John’s during the winter season. NOTE: The group will not meet

on October 4th, and will resume on October 11th.

Daughters of the King Meets Second Sundays at 11:45 a.m. St. Mary’s Chapter of the Daughters of the King has been part of St. John’s parish for over 100 years!

Meetings will be held the 2nd Sunday of each month, following 10:30 a.m. services, in the Deacon’s Office in

the lower level of the Ed. Bldg. Please visit one of our meetings and find out more about this dedicated

group. Our next meeting will be Sunday, October 9th. Grab a cup of coffee and join us!

When the Cameraman

Gets Caught Now how many times have we each

looked up to see Tom Pott with his

camera aimed at us. Tom and Katie

were helping with Sandwich Saturday

and it seemed most appropriate that

we have a picture of Tom doing what

Tom does best.

Moon Over ….

St. John’s

Mid morning we

looked up to see

the moon lending it’s light over our

steeple. Is this

news? No. But it

was such a beautiful

sight we wanted to

share it. We all

need a touch of the

beautiful in our lives.

Congratulations Jake Coniglio

on Your 100th Birthday Never underestimate the power of prayer. Our Jake – Jake

Coniglio – had to have a partial hip replacement following a fall.

This picture was taken one week later at his birthday party. He

didn’t want to miss a party!

St. John’s parishioners were a big part of helping him celebrate.

You responded with a regular downpour for his card shower.

Thank You! To the dedicated parish members who have

recently been working on our building and grounds: Phil Dietrich who keeps the lawn mowed and trimmed up, along with his West High student volunteers who work inside and out; an unnamed angel, who has been ridding the parking lot across Topeka St. of weeds; and Mike McFerren who has beautified the courtyard patio with mums, a St. Francis statue and bench. Be sure to notice their good work!

Doorstep Ministry Suspended In consultation with our Senior Warden I have suspended the Doorstep Ministry until further notice. We have no social workers here to handle folks who come to our doors requesting assistance; our staff must take time away from the duties for which we are paying them to attend to these needs. I believe St. John's outreach resources are better spent, in this interim period, by supporting requests from social service agen-cies to fund specific items for their clients. Doorstep funds can also support our Saturday Sandwich Ministry with seasonal needs. Please contact me with any comments or questions. -- Interim Pastor Ted

All Saints’ Sunday is November 6, 2016 A sign-up sheet will be available later this month at the back of the church to add the names of your dearly

departed loved ones whose names you would like to have read that Sunday in prayers. A Service of Baptism will take place. If you or a family member would like to be baptized, please contact the

parish office at 262-0897. A Customary of Baptism offers more information, and may be accessed at

www.stjohnswi.chita.org.

Parish History — Katie Pott, Parish Historian

100 years ago . . .

The Rev. Dr. Percy T. Fenn’s 1916 St. John’s Hand-Book:

THE LAYMEN’S MISSIONARY CONVENTION ~ We are always profoundly sorry when we

cannot unite with our denominational brethren. They had a great convention here, and we permitted one of our Bishops, and one of our Priests, to participate in it. But we were unable to do so for conscientious

reasons. ~ The aim of each convention is to generate enthusiasm for Missions. And there is no doubt that

we all need more of the missionary spirit than we have. ~ But when we unite with them we are ranked

among them as one Church among many, or one sect among many, and we, by our very participation, help

to create among our denominational brethren, a greater enthusiasm for the propagation of their defective

Christianity. And this we cannot do. ~ We are unable to understand why a few of our Bishops and Priests

can unite in such a movement, and we believe the time will come when they will regret it. ~ The

denominations are going into the foreign fields to carry with them their denial of the Historic Episcopate,

of Sacramental grace, of Infant Baptism, Confirmation, etc., and we shall be compelled to spend scores of

years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to uproot their teaching. For this reason we can have nothing

whatever to do with the movement.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE SICK ~ Your priest is always ready, at any hour of the day or night, to

minister to the sick of the parish. But it is the duty of the sick to send him word. In times of sickness we

need the prayers and the sacraments of the Church, and these are to be had for the asking, and upon

these, to a very large extent, our recovery may depend. ~ In case it should be necessary to go to the

hospital, please give orders to your physician for your priest to visit you. Your priest does not come to

you as a visitor, so “Visitors are not admitted” does not apply to him. He comes to you as your priest,

with the Church’s blessing, and with the Church’s Sacraments. ~ It would, therefore, be well for every

sick person, before going to the hospital, to consult the priest in regard to this matter, and to employ only

such physicians and surgeons as shall be willing to have your priest come to you. ~ We insist, most

earnestly, upon this, for your sake as well as for ours. In a matter of life or death you cannot afford to

exclude God. And no good churchman ever goes through an operation without the sacraments, and the

prayers of the Church!

OUR CONGREGATIONS ~ . . . Put your Church first in your mind, and first in your life, and see

how quickly it will change your point of view. Come to the services as frequently as possible, join heartily

in the responses and in the singing, and extend a hearty greeting to the strangers present, and see how

quickly the church will fill up. ~ We know that big congregations are never an index of spiritual

prosperity, but they are always an encouragement and an inspiration to rector and people.

The 157th Annual Convention of the diocese is set for

Oct. 28-29 at the Hilton Double Tree Hotel at the Airport

in Wichita.

This will be a joint gathering with delegates and clergy of

the Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas.

Each diocese will have its own business meetings; other

activities will be combined.

Episcopal Social Services Seeks Volunteers and Pantry Donations FOOD SERVICE VOLUNTEERS: Community Lunch Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve a nutritious meal including beverages using safe food handling practices. Volunteers also serve as mentors to trainees who are receiving employment training. Hours are weekdays from 9:30 to 1:30 and volunteers typically work one day a week, but schedules are flexible. Volunteers must be able to stand for an extended period and lift dishes. Within 6 months, the volunteer must obtain a food handler card. VOLUNTEER OPENINGS FOR REPRESENTATIVE PAYEE PROGRAM: This program provides financial management and support services to individuals with severe and persistent mental and physical disabilities who are required by the Social Security Administration to have a payee of record. Through trained volunteers, we assist each client with maintaining an independent lifestyle. The program serves more than 400 individuals. Representative Payee Volunteers work with clients in establishing a working budget, ensuring that their rent and utilities are paid and that they have food. Clients are seen morning hours from 9:00 to 12, in the afternoon from 1 to 3, and at one Monday evening shift from 5 to 7 p.m. Reconciliation Team Volunteers may choose to work only with reconciliation of computerized patient accounts and on-line bank statements. Discrepancies are recorded and discussed with Payee Staff. Schedule is flexible. Internal Audit Volunteers check a randomly selected client file to confirm that proper payments (expenses) and credits (income) are reflected in the client account and that the client’s personal spending has corresponding requests and receipts. Discrepancies and concerns are presented to the Representative Payee Coordinator. Schedule is flexible. FOOD DONATIONS NEEDED: canned tuna, chicken, beef stew, salmon, beans, baked beans, chili, bean soups; dried beans, rice, rice mixes, canned pasta, noodle mixes, dry noodles and pastas, mac & cheese mix, cold cereals; canned & boxed pudding, nonfat dried milk, evaporated milk, canned vegetables & fruit, vegetable soup, canned tomato products, spaghetti sauce, applesauce, paper napkins & towels, food storage bags, trash bags, hand & bath soap, laundry & dish detergent, cleaning products, shampoo & conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream, razors, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, diapers.
