On behalf of the St. Johns County School District, it is an honor to serve your children and families. Our mission and vision put students first and we are dedicated to their success. Through the dedication and caring nature of teachers, sta , and administrators, our students are able to realize achievement in academics, sports and extracurricular activities. The St. Johns County School District has once again retained its designation as a high-performing school district by the Florida Department of Education. We are proud of this distinction and we remain focused on making sure that all students are equipped with 21st century skills to garner success in an ever-expanding society.

As we experience unprecedented growth in St. Johns County, the importance of maintaining a quality educational environment has remained a priority. Thanks to the support of local voters, the half-cent sales surtax referendum was passed in 2015, and this has helped us to further our e orts to accommodate the rapid student growth each year. These funds are helping us to enhance and expand the educational experience of our students by providing funding for new school construction, school expansions, critical maintenance projects, technology upgrades, and safety and security improvements.

We are excited to have Picolata Crossing Elementary School open this year and look forward to the two new K-8 facili-ties opening for the 2018 – 2019 school year to serve students in the northern parts of the county. Schools provide a sense of community for students, parents, business partners, and stakeholders — all of whom work together to make our schools great.

As you read this publication you will see several new principal appointments at various schools. I have the utmost confidence in this skilled and talented group of leaders and know that they will serve our district and your children well.

The mission of the St. Johns County School District is to inspire good character and passion for lifelong learning in all students, creating educated and caring contributors to the world. In 1998, the St. Johns County School District, along with area businesses, youth organizations and civic groups, selected the national character education program of Character Counts! as a countywide initiative to instill positive character traits in our young people. Today, the initiative is continuing to influence the lives of students through intentional teaching and modeling the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. We are also committed to producing events, both large and small, to recognize and celebrate our students of great character.

We cannot do what we do without the support of parents like you, who further the exceptional learning and strong support that takes place in the classroom. We sincerely appreciate your involvement and participation in our schools and with our students. I encourage you to continue to be present, look to the future and love your children with all your heart, and I promise to do the same.

Sincerely,

Tim ForsonSuperintendent of Schools

We at Florida NewsLine, publisher of The CreekLine and Ponte Vedra NewsLine community newspapers, are pleased to continue our annual tradition of publishing the St. Johns County School Directory with this edition for the 2017 – 2018 school year. We hope you find the informa-tion it contains valuable.

Inside, you will find important details for each school in the areas served by The CreekLine (NW St. Johns County) and Ponte Vedra NewsLine (NE St. Johns County), including contact information as well as some fun historical tidbits.

Also included is information about the school dis-trict as a whole, including a listing of the school board members, a map of the northern St. Johns County Schools, guidance on how to enroll your child in school and varsity football schedules for the area high schools.

This directory is made possible through the assistance of St. Johns County School District Director of Communications Christina Langston and her sta and through the generosity of our valued sponsors whose advertisements appear in this issue. Without them, this directory would not exist and we encourage you to visit and patronize their businesses.

Finally, thank you, our readers, for your continued support of The CreekLine and Ponte Vedra News-Line as well as our other monthly and quarterly publications. For more than 17 years, you have welcomed us into your home and we are proud to be a part of our special community.

Best wishes from all of us at Florida NewsLine for a productive and fun school year.

Opening enrollment of the elementary school in 2003 was approximately 700 students, which was already at capacity, so fifth graders stayed at Fruit Cove Middle School for that first year.

Opening on September 8, 1972, the school was first known as Julington Creek School and served grades one through eight. The building sat on 10 acres and was an open design with no permanent walls between classrooms. Six years later a multi-purpose room was added. During the 1970s, kindergarten and ninth grade were added. When Allen D. Nease High School opened in 1980, Julington Creek sent its seventh, eighth and ninth graders to Nease and the school became a K-6. During 1982-1983 each pod became a sepa-rate grade area and permanent walls were added. Once Switzerland Point Middle School was opened in 1991, the sixth graders moved there making Julington Creek School its present K-5 elementary. In 2008-2009, Julington Creek Elementary was expanded to host 1,000 permanent student stations in the “house” design as well as new administration and kitchen/dining areas.

The school has a Safety Leader program that promotes student leadership, as well as a morning news show. There are numerous clubs that include Jump rope club, band, chorus, art, drama and karate.

The mission of Julington Creek Elementary is to enhance the development of the total child with a lifelong love of learning and that they may become a contributing member of society and display an eagerness to learn by participating in an academically challenging environment for students, sta , parents, and community.

The original Mill Creek School was erected in 1879. The first bus to serve the area was a Model-T driven by E.E. Fisher with Thelma Pacetti helping on an occasion. Mrs. Pacetti, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 105, began teaching at Mill Creek in 1926. She retired in 1975 after 46 years of service. The fourth building was erected in 1928 containing

six classrooms, an auditorium, principal’s o ice and an outside water fountain. Children brought sandwiches and ate them in a classroom where a big pot of soup was prepared daily. In the 1930s the children raised some of the vegetables for the soup in a garden outside. Electric-ity came to Mill Creek in 1948.

The current building was opened for the 1991-1992 school year and a 10-classroom wing was added in 2000. For the 2011-2012 school year, the school opened a two-story, 16-classroom addition behind the main building.

Mill Creek's family heritage stretched through many generations. As the little country school, many of our parents and grandparents were also students at Mill Creek.

Mill Creek is home of the “Mustangs” and the school’s motto, "learning for all" is representative in the services and education provides that is not packaged in a one size fits all box. FREE

Wards Creek Elementary is situated in a long-time rural area of St. Johns County; the plot of land that would become Wards Creek was originally a field surrounded by farms. Then, as the population exploded in the early 2000s, another school was needed to relieve Mill Creek Elementary. The Wards were a local family that had been in the area for generations and lived along a creek near the school. The students then chose "Warriors" as the school mascot with black and gold as the school colors. The school is built around an architectural concept of four "houses" surrounded by a common areas. In 2010 an additional wing was completed.
