STEWARDSHIP

The readings today speak of the end of the world and the coming of the

kingdom. The bishops’ pastoral on stewardship says clearly that “that

life to come’ is in continuity with this present life through the human

goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now.” May our

good stewardship help us to be numbered among the chosen on the last

day!

Sacrament of the Anointing of the SickThe elderly, because of their advanced ages more suscep-

tible to serious health issues, and those others with the use of rea-

son (usually considered to be seven years of age and over) who

have serious illness are candidates to receive the Sacrament of the

Anointing of the Sick. We will be celebrating the Sacrament of the

Anointing of the Sick within Mass during the month of November

at the following Masses:

Tuesday, November 24th, 10:00 a.m. Mass at West Village

Cluster Mission Update! We regret to announce that our cluster mission scheduled

for November 14th - 18th has been cancelled. There was a mis-

communication on the dates with Father Hoye. We are sorry for

any disappointment or inconvenience or hardship this may cause

for anyone.

Catholic Order of Foresters $600 College Tuition

DrawingApplication deadline November 30, 2015

Catholic Order of Foresters members, age seventeen or older, at-

tending or planning to attend an accredited college, university,

trade or technical school, may apply for one of 40 one-time $600

educational awards presented annually. Winners will be selected by

random drawing, and those not chosen may apply again. The dead-

line to apply is November 30th, 2015. Applicants must be individu-

ally insured Catholic Order of Foresters members in good standing

for at least two years prior to applying. You may download an

entry form from their website at www.CatholicForester.org. Click

on Membership Benefits, then $600 Education Award. Or contact

Janet Woods at 319-327-0244.

Cold and Flu Season

As we move into the season of coughing, sneez-

ing, runny noses, etc., you are gently reminded

that the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday is

put aside when you are ill and contagious. It is

better for your recovery that you stay home and

take care of yourself, and it is surely better for your neighbor not

to be exposed to your germs.

Sign of Peace

There are parishioners who may feel uncomfortable with

the Sign of Peace during these months because of their fear of con-

tagion. Please respect their wishes if they do not wish to share

the sign of peace with you.

Winter Weather Conditions and the Elderly

It is better for those who are unsteady on their feet to

avoid being out in the elements and possibly experience a fall

which could result in injury. If you have trouble navigating on

snowy and icy walkways, it is better to remain at home than to

risk a fall.

WANTED!Bakers and Crafters! PTO Craft Bazaar is right around the

corner. We'd appreciate any and all donations for cookies, candies,

canned goods, and crafts. Please call Amee Friedhof at 319-350-

1410 if you'd like to donate. All donations MUST be at the Multi-

purpose room by Friday, November 20 at 8:30 am.

13th Annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving ServiceYou are cordially invited to the annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving

Service to be held at the Church of Christ United in Winthrop on

Sunday, November 22nd at 4:00 p.m. Other participating

Churches are Saint Patrick's Catholic Church of Winthrop and the

Union Church of Quasqueton. The uplifting service is followed by

fellowship and refreshments. All are welcome.

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

There are many Web sites out there that proclaim that we

are close to the end of time; that the troubles of our not-too-dis-

tant past have been the events that were prophesized by many

and written of throughout the Bible. These Web sites tell us how

to prepare, what to watch for, etc. But on nearly every single

Web site, you will find advertisements by Google or Yahoo. It is

possible to have a Web site without advertisements; but if we are

near the end of times, do these Web sites really need a revenue

stream? If it is nearly over, does money really matter?

In today's Gospel reading from Mark, Jesus was sitting pri-

vately with Peter, James, John, and Andrew. They had been dis-

cussing the end of times, and the four disciples wanted to know

how they would recognize the second coming of Christ. There

will be wars and conflicts, he told them; this will happen but

does not mean impending doom. Rather, Jesus was most con-

cerned about the destruction of Jerusalem and those who would

proclaim to be Jesus himself, performing acts that will cause a

distraction among the people. We cannot be distracted; in keep-

ing our faith and our trust in the Lord, we will easily recognize

the coming of Jesus Christ.

We have absolutely no idea how or when Jesus Christ will

come again, transforming this world into one in which sin is

dead and goodness prevails (CCC 1048). We are told to be ever

watchful, however, and to do so means to surrender our hearts to

God's love. As Catholic Christians, we believe that God loves

each and every one of us despite our sins, and wants us all to be

saved. And we also believe that "with God, all things are possi-

ble." ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc

“And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’ with

great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and

gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to

the end of the sky.” - Mk 13:26-27

IOWA Testing beginsThe primary reasons we administer this standardized test is to gain

information about students for instructional planning, to supple-

ment teacher assessments regarding student abilities, and to pro-

vide data for subsequent annual evaluation of student progress. In

other words, this series of tests is a tool that helps us measure our

effectiveness. Since we realize that standardized tests can be stress-

ful, students will normally be given one or two of them a day; thus

spreading them out over the course of the next two weeks. Please

help us attain the best efforts of your student by making sure they

are well rested and eat a good breakfast before coming to school.

Medical Missionaries of Mary - Thank you!

Dear Fr. Plamondon,

We have received a check from the Propagation of Faith office in the Archdiocese of

Dubuque for the Mission Appeal made on your parishes on August 1-2, 2015 as part of the

Missionary Cooperation Plan for 2015.

The people of your parishes were generous on their response and we are grateful to them.

This money will be used well by our Sisters on the missions as we continue to bring healing

and hope to those we serve.

Please thank the people of St. John the Evangelist and St. Patrick for us. We continue to

keep them in our prayers.

Thank you again for your kindness to Sister Kathie while she was there.

Gratefully yours in Christ,

Sister Mary Ann MacRae,MMM
