3St. Josaphat Parish

P a r i s h M i s s i o n S t a t e m e n t :

St. Josaphat Catholic Parish, with faith in a loving God, joyfully welcomes all who wish to come together as a community of shared faith in Jesus Christ, to give glory and praise to God.

We commit to making Christ’s love apparent on our journey of faith by striving to support, comfort, forgive, challenge and inspire each other in our homes, schools, neighborhoods, community and world.

We are energized through the celebration of the sacraments and the proclamation of the Gospel. Through our ongoing formation and education, outreach to those in need and hospitality to all, we come to know Christ and make Christ known.

— Fr. Mike

Wednesday of this week is Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten Season. Ashes will be distributed at all the masses and a prayer service on Ash Wednesday: 8:15 a.m. mass, 12:00 noon mass, 4:00 p.m. prayer service, and 6:30 p.m. mass.

Ash Wednesday is also a day of abstinence and fasting. Often, I am asked, “who has to fast and abstain?” All Catholics 14 and older are to abstain from eating meat, and Catholics between the ages of 18-59 are to fast, taking one full meal, and eating no snacks between meals.

RCIA: The Rite of Sending

This afternoon, the adults in the RCIA program will go the Holy Name Cathedral to publicly announce or enroll in the larger church. They are entering into the final period of preparation to join the Catholic Church. At the Easter Vigil, Kate Jensen will be Baptized, and, with Jim Flanders, Lani Sanchez, and Lisa Schulte, will be Confirmed and receive their First Communion.

At each of the weekend masses during Lent, we will be celebrating at least one of the special rites that are part of the RCIA initiation process. Performing these rites at different masses will allow everyone in the parish to become familiar with them, and allow the parish community to pray with and for these people as they prepare to enter the church.

ALMONERS:

As mentioned in last week’s bulletin, we are taking on in a special way of meeting the challenge to be more

compassionate and loving of the less fortunate. We will take on the role of being Almoners, that being alms-givers. An Almoner has three duties: to pray for those in need, to raise funds to help others, and to distribute goods to those in need.

Starting next Sunday and on every Sunday during Lent, you will have the opportunity to give to a special fund. I suggest skipping a meal out or having a Starbucks, and donating the money instead to this fund. Being an Almoner includes sacrifice from each one of us.

Each Monday evening, beginning March 10th we will be gathering for prayer and reflection at 6:30 in the church, and we will commission a few to go out and distribute the alms.

SPECIAL THANKS

There are glamorous positions in the church and then there are positions behind the scenes. Sometimes deserving people are overlooked. At this time, a special “Thank You” goes out to Joe Keller, Chris DeMent, the Finance Council, the School Board and Fran Klus. Over the last month, they have been working diligently on next year’s budget, which is no easy task. They have no idea how much I appreciate their time and effort.

Get Well Soon!

Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

My name is Mary Jane and I am a worrier!

One of the hardest things for me to do is to not worry. I worry about my kids, my granddaughter, my Dad, my siblings, and my friends. I worry about money, my future and retirement. I worry about tomorrow and the day after. I worry about the weather, my drive to work and the traffic. I worry about the mailman and if he will slip on the ice by my front door.

I guess part of being a woman and a mother is to worry. Sometimes I am really good about, “letting go and letting God” but other times I find myself getting stressed out by a number of worries and suddenly I feel overwhelmed. It is at times like this that I have to stop and say to myself, “Why are you doing this? You know who is in control and it isn’t you!” It is easy to worry and hard to let go. It is also detrimental to worry and healthy to let go. God has a plan and we don’t know what that plan is. I have to keep reminding myself that when I pray about a person or a situation I am leaving that worry in God’s hands. I can continue to pray about it but it is through my faith that I have to let it go. I often find myself praying about worrying

which sounds so strange but then I find myself at peace. It is at times like this that I feel God comforting me, calming me and reminding me that he loves me and that he will never leave me. Matthew’s gospel spells this out very clearly for us. “Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself."

In our first reading from Isaiah we hear the same message with different words, “I will never forget you.” The reading compares God’s love for us as similar to the love a mother has for her infant. As a mother of three and a brand new grandmother, I can attest to that being the strongest kind of love. Why should you or I worry about anything when we are that loved?

Together, let’s make it our Lenten commitment to worry less as we enter into this season of Lent this Wednesday.

NEW Low-Gluten HostsFor some time we have been able to provide low-gluten hosts to those with wheat gluten intolerance. While we were happy to be able to provide these hosts, they were a “tougher” host than what we are used to. But recently the community of Benedictine Sisters who bake all our hosts have been able to make some great changes in the low-gluten hosts so they now look and feel like the regular hosts we are used to. Like the previous hosts, these are less than .01% gluten content per bread. They are now white in color and shaped round, like our regular hosts.

If you would like to receive a low-gluten host, please notify the priest/celebrant BEFORE mass. The low-gluten hosts are consecrated and kept in a separate, small ciborium, not in contact with the regular hosts. At Communion time, please come to the priest/celebrant for Communion and he will have the small ciborium and will give you a consecrated host from that special ciborium.

We are happy to announce that Mrs. Kathleen Talbot, our assistant principal, was recognized last weekend with an Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools Distinguished Service Award for 2014. This award is well deserved as Mrs. Talbot does a tremendous amount of work for the school behind the scenes. We are grateful for her service. Congratulations!

In second grade social studies, the students have been learning about landmarks in the United States. Recently, they worked with their teams to match photographs with the names of landmarks.

In science class (left), 2nd grade students used iPads to record podcasts about penguins.

On February 22, a group of 7th and 8th grade students (right) and parents met at Bernie's Book Bank to organize donated books for families without the financial means to stock

a library for their children. The students enjoyed rereading some of their childhood favorites as they sorted the books according to grade level. They were excited to share their love of reading with others through a great day of service.

Recently, fifth graders (below) took a field trip to watch the play "Number the Stars," based on the novel that they just finished reading in class. The play was staged by DePaul theatre students, and was a fun experience for all. Following the play, the students were excited to compare and contrast the events from the novel to that of the play. They really enjoyed the downtown theatre experience.

Raising Faith-Filled Kids • One Word at a Time

WorkThere’s an old story about a traveler who approached two stone masons and asked each one what he was doing. The first mason grumbled, “All day long I have to take these big stones and break them into smaller stones.” The second one smiled and said, “I get to build a cathedral!” Work can sometimes seem like a curse, but our Catholic faith tells us work is a blessing. Our attitude plays a big part in whether we experience work—whether on our jobs or in our homes—as drudgery or joy. Instead of saying, “I have to…,” practice saying, “I get to…,” Rather than “I have to take my kids to soccer practice,” say, “I get to take my kids to soccer practice.” This trick can turn dreary days into wonderful opportunities for you and your family. —Tom McGrathY e a r o f S t r o n g C a t h o l i C Pa r e n t SThe Archdiocese of chicAgo in partnership with Loyola Press. For more Parent ing resources: www.loyolapress .comwww.CatholicParentsChicago.org

Meet the St. Josaphat School Board: Reggie Treadwell

Tell us about yourself and why you decided to join the school board: I have two daughters, (Zoe, 6th) and (Noelle, 1st). We have been at SJS for six years when we discovered St. Josaphat from friends whose children were enrolled at here at that time. They loved it and we decided to apply. The rest, as they say, is history. I decided to join the board because I wanted to help make a difference at the school. I had experience working with the tour and coffees a few years earlier, and I really enjoyed getting to know the parents and all the great things St. Josaphat had to offer. I thought joining the board would be my way of giving back to the school that has done so much for my family.

How long have you been on the school board and what do you enjoy about it? This is my third year on the board and the thing I enjoy the most is the relationships I have established with my fellow board members.3. Can you tell us about your responsibilities? I serve as the Athletics committee chair. My responsibilities include attending the athletic association board meetings and

reporting relevant information about upcoming events to the school board. What are you proud of about St. Josaphat School and what do you hope for the future of SJS? I am most proud of the great education my kids are receiving here at St. Josaphat. I am also very proud of the volunteer work that my wife and I have done here, and look forward to continuing that. As a School Board Officer, what do you envision accomplishing this year? Very simply, I hope to continue to provide leadership and support to the board, and continue to build on the great legacy of St. Josaphat school.
