O Joseph, holy Guardian of Jesus and Mary, assist us by thy prayers in all the necessities of life.!

Summer, new year and a seminarian As many of you are aware, I am currently wearing a number of “hats” within the diocese. In addition to serving as pastor here at St. Joseph Church and School, I serve on the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal as a Notary and Assessor on marriage cases; I’m finishing up a licentiate in canon law (Juris Canonici Licentia) at the Catholic University of America sometime this summer, God-willing; and I am serving as the Associate Director and Promoter of Voca-tions through my mandate of June 30, 2018. There has been a bit of speculation in the parish around what would happen with me following the announcement of my official role in the Vocation Office around the time of the Bishop’s arrival in January. As to what will oc-cur regarding personnel assignments and how they will affect me, and by extension, all of you…I don’t know anything more than what follows: Last week, following a meeting of the Priest Personnel Board, Bishop Knestout assigned a seminarian to St. Joseph Church and School for his pastoral year (June 2018-August 2019). Philip (Phil) Decker has just completed his second year of theology at CUA and his third year of formation at Theological College in Washing-ton, DC. Phil hails from St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Yorktown. Prior to entering seminary he was the youth minister at St. Joan’s. Following service at the priesthood ordination Mass on June 2, 2018, Phil will head to Gua-temala with his classmates for Spanish Immersion. He’ll return to the States at the end of July and will join me in the rectory at the beginning of August. (For the first time in a very long time, our upcoming budget is helping defray the cost of hosting seminarians…thank you for your continued generosity). The timing should work well. God-willing, I will complete my JCL in Canon Law at CUA in the final days of July. Phil and I will attend the Seminarian Gathering during the first week of August. With all that said, my plan at present is to be in the parish most of the summer, at least on the weekends. During the week I will be driving between Washington and Richmond, busy with diocesan functions, seminarian gather-ings, writing of my canon law thesis and studying for oral comprehensive exams. The plan is to provide a few daily Masses (probably Thursday and Fridays) and the coverage of weekend Mass. There will be a couple weekends that I will be away from the parish during the summer. Msgr. Muench has graciously offered to help cov-er some of the weekends I need to be away to study and write. I will not be officially publishing my schedule. Contrary to some rumors I don’t actually like being away from the parish and don’t particularly care for DC that really does live up to its name as an historical “Swamp” during the summer…When I can avoid being up in DC on the weekend, I’ll try and come home. What could happen with me following the publication of new priestly assignments official on July 1? With the news that we have received a “pastoral year seminarian:” I am definitely here at St. Joseph for the foreseeable future. Praise the Lord…we finally hooked up the stove and I just finished unboxing the dishes…an open-house will be held soon. Keep an eye on the bulletin. What about after July 1? There are any number of possibilities for how I will serve in the diocese if I successfully complete the Licentiate in Canon Law this summer. I might continue to serve in the Tribunal or in some capacity in the Diocesan Chancery. I might not serve at all in either office…who knows? No need for speculation, let’s just keep working in the Lord’s Vineyard and working for the salvation of souls. Thank you for your commitment to the parish and your attempts to keep me healthy…I need a lot of help. St. Joseph, pray for us - Fr. Capuano

2018 Annual Diocesan Appeal:

Building Our Family of Faith If you made a pledge to the 2018 Appeal, the Diocese has begun sending reminders so you can fulfill your pledge. Please note that if you chose an auto-debit off your checking account or credit card, you will not receive a reminder.

It is important for all our parishioners to complete their pledges. The assistance that is provided to the ministries and programs the Appeal supports, such as grants to our mis-

sion parishes, heating and grocery assistance to families, health insurance for our retired priests and tuition for our future priests to attend the seminary, is based on what is collected.

In addition, all parishes receive back a portion of their amounts collected. This means the more we collect, the more we can address our important parish needs. This year, the funds returned to us will be used to repair and renovate our stained-glass windows.

Thank you for your continued support of the important ministries and programs that are made possible due to your generosity to the Annual Appeal.

To St. Joseph Parishioners - A Thank You From a non-Catholic who attended the parish on the weekends for a number of years and recently moved away: “Fr. Capuano - Please send my greetings and gratitude to my friends at Saint Joseph Parish. For four years, so many people were so generous with their time, knowledge, insight, hospitality, helpfulness, personal warmth, mate-rial means, and spiritual fellowship, all of whom contributed in important and distinct ways to my development. I won’t forget you or any of them. Pax Tecum, David Alan.” Remember, that our witness of the faith is not just in words, but in deeds, thank you for making the parish a “welcome” haven for folks who desire truth, beauty and goodness and begin to see who those basic elements of life manifest themselves most profoundly in the Church

of Christ which subsists in the Catholic Church. For those who are in the pews and are not Catholic, thank you for keeping your hearts and minds open to how the Lord is calling you.

- Fr. Capuano

Contributions to the Parish One of the precepts of the Church is contributing to the needs of the Church at large. The parish is of course part of “the Church.” The community here is able to continue and grow because of your consistent generosity, week-in-and-week out. Thank you for your sacrifice that enables us to maintain a Catholic presence here in Pe-tersburg. It has come to light in recent months that there are a number of people who have been writing one check and asking that the contributions be split between multiple projects or initiatives in the parish. An example: John Doe writes a check for $100 and asks that: - $50 goes to the Capital Building Fund - $25 goes to the flower fund - $25 goes to religious education When it is time for counting the collection on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning the volunteer counters and our parish staff can sometimes have a difficult time aligning the specific requests, due to multiple bank ac-counts within the parish. It’s a process that takes time and is susceptible to errors in accounting, requiring a lot of time for the staff later on. Moving forward I would encourage our parishioners, when writing checks for vari-ous needs, to cut individual checks for individual initiatives. It makes the accounting process clear and concise and enables us to track your money to ensure that it ends up supporting what you have generously chosen to support in the parish.
