THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY

CROSS

In the early seventh century, the Persians conquered Jerusalem. The Persian King Khosrau II captured the True Cross and took it back to Persia. After Khosrau's defeat by Emperor Heraclius II, Khosrau's own son had him assassinated in 628 and returned the True Cross to Heraclius. In 629, Heraclius, having initially taken the True Cross to Constantinople, decided to restore it to Jerusalem. Tradition says that he carried the Cross on his own back, but when he attempted to enter the church on Mount Calvary, a strange force stopped him. Patriarch Zacharias of Jerusalem, seeing the emperor was struggling, advised him to take off his royal robes and crown and to dress in a penitential robe instead. As soon as Heraclius took Zacharias' advice, he was able to carry the True Cross into the church. The Holy Cross (to prevent further thefts) was split into several pieces. One piece was taken to Rome another to Constantinople, the third piece was left in a beautiful silver casket in Jerusalem. Another was split into tiny chips to distribute in various churches around the world; they were called "Veracruz" (True Cross). The sign of the cross was not one of the first signs that were used among Christians, as it was an affront and a sign of pain and shame, the preferred instrument of torture of the Romans. It is presumed that as much as we are followers of a criminal who is sentenced to death. However, St. Paul, in the Letter to the Galatians, invites us to Glory in the Cross of Christ the Lord, for there is our salvation, our glory and resurrection. It is scandal and folly of the cross. Following Christ means to deny oneself, take up our cross and follow him, but not with luxury and pomp, as the King Heraclius wanted to do, but stripping us of our vanities, privileges, charters and sins, so that, once stripped of everything, we can go in his footsteps. The Holy Cross is somewhat contradictory. How is it possible that an instrument of death becomes a sign of salvation? It is because of the great love of God, who loves us so much, that He has given us His own Son to save us from a punishment that we would deserve for our most terrible mistakes that lead to despair and suicide. However, Jesus paid, with his bloody sacrifice, the price of our sins. So that when we die, we are led to a new life with greater joy and hope and we become a light to enlighten others on the way to salvation .

LA EXALTACION DE LA SANTA CRUZ

La fiesta del Triunfo de la Santa Cruz se hace en recuerdo de la recuperación de la Santa Cruz obtenida en el año 614 por el emperador Heraclio, quien la logró rescatar de los Persas que se la habían robado de Jerusalén. Al llegar de nuevo la Santa Cruz a Jerusalén, el emperador dispuso acompañarla en solemne procesión, pero vestido con todos los lujosos ornamentos reales, y de

pronto se dió cuenta de que no era capaz de avanzar. Entonces el Arzobispo de Jerusalén, Zacarías, le dijo: "Es que todo ese lujo de vestidos que lleva, están en desacuerdo con el aspecto humilde y doloroso de Cristo, cuando iba cargando la cruz por estas calles". Entonces el emperador se despojó de su manto de lujo y de su corona de oro, y descalzo, empezó a recorrer así las calles y pudo seguir en la piadosa procesión. La Santa Cruz (para evitar nuevos robos) fue partida en varios pedazos. Uno fue llevado a Roma, otro a Constantinopla, un tercero se dejó en un hermoso cofre de plata en Jerusalén. Otro se partió en pequeñísimas astillas para repartirlas en diversas iglesias del mundo entero, que se llamaron "Veracruz"(verdadera cruz). El signo de la cruz no fue uno de los primeros signos que se usaron entre los Cristianos, ya que era una afrenta y un signo de dolor y vergüenza el instrumento de martirio preferido por los Romanos. Es tanto como presumir que somos seguidores de algún criminal que es sentenciado a muerte. Sin embargo, San Pablo en la Carta a los Gálatas nos invita a gloriarnos en la Cruz de Cristo el Señor, porque allí está nuestra salvación, nuestra gloria y resurrección. Es el escándalo y la locura de la cruz. Seguir a Cristo supone negarse a sí mismo, tomar nuestra cruz y seguirlo, pero no con lujo y pompa, como quería hacerlo el Rey Heraclio, sino despojándonos de nuestras vanidades, privilegios, fueros y pecados, para que una vez, despojados de todo, podamos ir en su seguimiento. La Santa Cruz es algo contradictorio. ¿Cómo es posible que un instrumento de muerte se convierta en signo de salvación? Es por el amor inmenso de Dios que nos ama tanto, que nos ha entregado a su propio Hijo para salvarnos de un castigo que mereceríamos por nuestros más terribles errores que nos conducen a la desesperación y al suicidio. Sin embargo, Jesús pagó con su sacrificio de sangre el precio de nuestras culpas, para que muriendo con El, resurjamos a una nueva vida con mayor alegría y esperanza y nos convirtamos a la vez en luz que ilumine a otros en su camino a la salvación.

On September 15, Mexico celebrates

with great joy the NIGHT OF CRY,

in which the President of the Republic

and in every village, the mayor,

remind us of the bell and the

invocation made by the pastor of the

Church of Dolores in Guanajuato on

September 15, 1810, inviting the

faithful to fight for Independence by

shouting “Long live Fernando VII, “Death to bad

government”, “Long Live Independence”, “Long Live

Virgin of Guadalupe”, Long Live Mexico” and “Kill

Spaniards.”

Tenochtitlan, Mexico, had fallen in 1521 and since

then the Spanish Empire created the colony of New Spain.

The Mazehualis, ie, the deserving of the Gods, were now

slaves in their own land where they were before lords and

masters.

The motivation for independence from Spain, was

the same that led to the United States for its independence

from England. It was the same motivation that lead any

country to independence from government subjecting it:

Discrimination, slavery, abuse of the dominated, repressive

and intolerable laws, etc.

Napoleon had overthrown King Ferdinand VII of

Spain and Mexico's fate was uncertain. It was a group of

Creole intellectuals, sons of Spaniards, who planned

Independence. Father Miguel Hidalgo called upon the

people to take up arms and stand up to fight for freedom.

Father Hidalgo was not the only priest, there were over

seventy clergyman who fought for Mexico’s Independence

and gave their lives for this ideal. Among them are Father

Jose Maria Morelos and Pavon, and Father Mariano

Matamoros.

What motivated these Priests to fight? The same

Evangelical principles that remind us that every human being

is created in the image and likeness of God and has the right

to be treated with respect and dignity. So today we extend

the celebration to the entire nation and culture recognizing

the call for self-determination and respect for the sovereignty

of each nation. LONG LIVE FREEDOM!

the Independence of Mexico and Central

American countries. At our Parish of St.

Joseph, we will celebrate the Solemn Mass

at 6 pm followed by the Cry of

Independence. Dress typical and bring your

favorite dish to share.

El 15 de Septiembre México

celebra con gran alegría la NOCHE

DEL GRITO en la que el Presidente

de la República y en cada pueblo, el

Presidente Municipal, nos recuerdan el

toque de campana y la invocación que

hizo el Párroco de la Iglesia de Dolores

en Guanajuato el 15 de Septiembre de

1810, invitando a la feligresía a luchar

por la Independencia al grito de ¨Viva

Fernando VII, Muera el mal gobierno,

Viva la Independencia, Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe, Viva

México y a matar Gachupines¨.

México Tenochtitlan había caído en 1521 y desde

entonces, el Imperio Español creó la Colonia de la Nueva

España. Los Mazehualis, es decir, los merecidos de los

Dioses, ahora eran esclavos en su propia tierra donde antes

eran amos y señores.

La motivación para independizarse de España, fue la

misma que motivó a los Estados Unidos para su

independencia de Inglaterra y fue la misma motivación que

lleva a cualquier país a independizarse del gobierno que le

somete. La discriminación, la esclavitud, el abuso hacia los

dominados, las leyes represivas e intolerables, etc.

Napoleón había derrocado al Rey Fernando VII de

España y el destino de México era incierto. Fue un grupo de

intelectuales criollos, hijos de Españoles, que planearon la

Independencia y fue un Sacerdote, el Padre Miguel Hidalgo,

el que invocó al pueblo a tomar las armas y ponerse en pie de

lucha por la libertad. El Padre Hidalgo no fue el único

Sacerdote, fueron más de setenta clérigos los que lucharon

por un México Independiente y dieron su vida por ese ideal,

entre ellos destacan el Padre José María Morelos y Pavón y el

Padre Mariano Matamoros.

¿Qué motivó a estos Sacerdotes a luchar? Los

mismos principios Evangélicos que nos recuerdan que todo

ser humano ha sido creado a imagen y semejanza de Dios y

que tiene derecho a ser tratado con respeto y dignidad. Por

eso hoy hacemos extensiva la celebración a toda Nación y

cultura reconociendo el llamado a la autodeterminación de

los pueblos y el respeto a la soberanía de cada Nación. ¡VIVA

LA LIBERTAD!

FIESTA DEL GRITO DE INDEPENDENCIA

El Lunes 15 de Septiembre celebramos la Independencia de México y los Países Centroamericanos y en Nuestra Parroquia de San José lo festejaremos con la Misa Solemne a las 6 p.m. y luego con la Celebración del ¨Grito¨. Ven con ropa típica e invítanos a disfrutar de algún rico manjar de tu Terruño.

El Matziko World Horphan Choir. Es un Coro integrado por niños huérfanos de Liberia, India y Perú que presentaron su espectáculo artístico el día Lunes 8 de Septiembre en Nuestra Parroquia de San José

en Mammoth Lakes y el día Martes 9 de Septiembre durante la Misa de El Santo Niño de Praga en Bridgeport . La sencillez, ternura y capacidad de sorprenderse de todo y apreciar hasta las más pequeñas cosas que nosotros usamos rutinariamente, además de su gran talento artístico, nos robaron el corazón a todos. Dan ganas de adoptar a uno de estos niños, pero, por lo menos podemos patrocinarlos. Con $35.00 dólares al mes, podemos ayudar para que estos niños puedan alimentarse y continuar con su educación hasta terminar su carrera en la Universidad. EDUCACION RELIGIOSA PARA TODOS.- La Catequesis no es solamente para los niños que han de recibir su Primera Comunión, sino para todas las personas de cualquier edad que quieran conocer la Fe Católica o recibir alguno de los Sacramentos. También están invitados los que quieren convertirse a la Religión Católica y recibir el Bautismo. Las inscripciones son ahora. Puedes pasar a registrarte al final de la Misa. El Jueves 18 de Septiembre a las 7 p.m. tendremos junta con los Papás de los niños que asistirán al Catecismo. Es indispensable su presencia.

El obispo Stephen E. Blaire se une a la peregrinación de paz por la Tierra Santa. El Obispo Blaire, viajará con una delegación de 18 obispos de EE.UU. a la Tierra Santa, del 10 Septiembre al 19, para orar por la paz. Los obispos van a orar junto con el Patriarca Latino de Jerusalén, los católicos, los cristianos armenios apostólicos, luteranos, anglicanos, evangélicos, musulmanes y judíos. Los obispos también seguirán las huellas del papa Francisco, que oro por la paz en su peregrinación a Tierra Santa, el pasado 24 de mayo . LA JUSTICIA BROTA DE LA FE. Comenzamos una nueva etapa en este programa de Evangelización de nuestra Diócesis. Estás a tiempo para integrarte y crecer en tu fe. Matziko World Horphan Choir

The Matziko World Horphan Choir is composed of orphaned children in Liberia, India and Peru who submitted their art show on Monday 8 September at our St. Joseph Parish in Mammoth Lakes and during the Mass of the Holy Infant of Prague in Bridgeport on Tuesdeay, September 9. The simplicity, tenderness and ability to surprise all and appreciate even the smallest things that we use routinely, and its great artistic talent, stole all our hearts. Makes you want to adopt one of these children, but at least we can sponsor them. With $35.00 per month, we can help feed these children and allow them to continue their education at the University. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR ALL Catechesis is not only for the children who have to receive their First Communion, but for everyone of any age who wish to learn about the Catholic faith or receive any of the Sacraments. Those who want to be converted to the Catholic Religion and receive Baptism are invited as well. Registrations are open now. You can get registered at the end of the Mass. On Thursday, September 18 at 7 p.m., we will have a meeting with parents of children who attend the Catechism. Attendance is mandatory. Bishop Stephen E. Blaire Joins Peace Pilgrimage to the Holy Land Bishop Blaire will travel with a delegation of 18 U.S. bishops to the Holy Land, September 10-19, to pray for peace. The bishops will pray alongside the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Catholics, Armenian Apostolic Christians, Lutherans, Anglicans, Evangelicals, Muslims and Jews. The bishops also follow in the footsteps of Pope Francis, who prayed for peace on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, May 24 MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY MASSES - At 7 am in Rectory. Come to Mass and stay for coffee and meet new friends after the Celebration.
