This Week at St. John

Tue 3:30 pm Mass/Confession Jan 18-25 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Christian Unity: The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is observed from January 18-25. All Christians must strive to do a better job of witnessing to our common beliefs in Jesus Christ to help non-Christians come to believe in the Gospel. For centuries different Christians groups have worshipped separately. For over 100 years there has been a movement of Chris-tians around the world to pray for one another and to pray for greater visible unity in the Body of Christ. Christian divisions are a cause of scan-dal in our world. Please join me and other Chris-tians that we may grow closer together as we work to fulfill Jesus prayer, “that all my be one”.

WHY? One day a man was complaining to God, “why do you allow things like famine, war, homelessness, crime, abortions, starvation, dis-ease, suffering, and despair to exist in our world? Why God don’t you do something?” And God replied, “I did do something, I made you!”

9 Days for Life (January 21-29) is a novena for the protection of human life. Each day’s inten-tion is accompanied by a short reflection and suggested actions to help build a culture of life. Join today at www.9daysforlife.com! Pray for the Right to Life: Pray daily for the end to abor-tion, that all mothers and children experience the loving support of the Church community, and that all who suffer after abortion find heal-ing and peace.

Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children This Friday, January 22, is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. We are called to observe this day through the peniten-tial practices of prayer, fasting and giving alms. The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade reflect with heart-breaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” As people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The Horror of Abortion: Have you ever watched the movie Unplanned? Unplanned is the inspiring true story of one woman’s journey of transformation. All Abby Johnson ever want-ed to do was help women. As one of the young-est Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women about their reproductive choices. Her passion sur-rounding a woman’s right to choose even led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw something that changed everything, leading Abby Johnson to join her former ene-mies at 40 Days For Life, and become one of the most ardent pro-life speakers in America.

Stop & Pray, 10 Minutes a Day

Christians at Prayer: As Christians we are called to pray both with other Christians and alone by ourselves. Jesus instructed his follow-ers, “when you pray, go to your inner room and pray to your Father in private. We can pray an-ywhere. We can pray in the privacy of our homes or outside in nature. However, whenev-er we pray with our church community, we give public witness to our faith. Jesus also taught his followers, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and give praise to our heavenly Father. As Christians it is im-portant to pray daily and to read the Bible. We need both to help sustain the hunger of our souls.

A Year of St. Joseph (3) The stories of Joseph

from the Bible tell of a man who was deeply

committed to prayer. He knew how to speak to

God and, perhaps more importantly, how to lis-

ten to God. Joseph can serve as a great model for

responding to God’s call and living a rewarding

life of prayer.

The 150th anniversary of St. Joseph being

designated as the patron saint and protector of

the Catholic Church is December 8, 2020. how

did the earthly father of Jesus-who is never

quoted in Scripture directly-earn this distinc-

tion, and why is he still a model for us today?

Among the various ideas the Fathers of

the First Vatican Council presented to Pope Pius

IX (1846-1879), two related to St. Joseph. First,

153 bishops signed a request to have St. Joseph’s

name inserted into the sacred liturgy. Second,

forty-three superior generals signed their names

to an appeal for the solemn proclamation of St.

Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church.

Did You Know? From your first moments of existence, you had all the DNA that would deter-mine your sex, facial features, physique, and the color of your skin, hair, and eyes. At 24 days, your heart began beating. By 8 weeks, all your organs were present, and your unique finger-prints were forming. Ultrasounds show that by 18 weeks, you could swim, somersault, suck your thumb, and even cover your ears if you heard loud music. If you’d been born just 23 weeks after conception, your chance of survival would be 50-80 percent; by 25 weeks, it’s over 90 percent, and that’s still months before full-term birth.

Thank You: Thank you to all that helped with decorating the church for Christmas. It was very beautiful. Thank you for all the Christmas cards and gifts. I appreciate your love and support. Be assured of my prayers for you and your family. - Fr. Tony

You cannot serve God “and” Money, but you must learn to serve God “with” money.

Week of Prayer: The Week of Prayer for Chris-tian Unity was developed by Father Paul Watt-son, SA, at Graymoor in Garrison, New York, and was first observed from January 18-25, 1908. Today, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity invites the whole Christian community throughout the world to pray in communion with the prayer of Jesus “that they all may be one” (John 17:21). In 1966, the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and the Vati-can Council for Promoting Christian Unity began collaborating to recommend a common interna-tional text for worldwide usage. Since 1968 these international texts, which are based on themes proposed by ecu-menical groups around the world, have been developed, adapted, and published for use in the United States by the Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute. The recommended text for 2021 is, “Abide in My Love…You Shall Bear Much Fruit (cf. John 15:1-17)

A Culture of Care: Appealing for a worldwide commitment to initiating a “culture of care” for one another and for the environment, Pope Francis again called on nations to divert money from their military budgets to create a global fund to end hunger and promote development in the world’s poorest nations. “How many re-sources are spent on weaponry, especially nu-clear weapons, that could be used for more sig-nificant priorities such as ensuring the safety of individuals, the promotion of peace and integral human development, the fight against poverty and the provision of health care,” he wrote in his message for World Peace Day 2021.

70+ Schedule Vaccine: The Health Dept and the Hospital will soon be receiving the Covid Vaccine for category 1b. They have asked us to help get a list of people 70 years old and older and who wish to receive the vaccine. If you are interested in getting the vaccine, please call the church office at 270-259-3028 or the Health Dept 270-259-3141 so you can be scheduled as soon as possible.
