Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday. I love it for many reasons, the time with family, the food, and things like the parades, football games, and even my sisters and Mom going off to Black Friday sales! What I most love about Thanksgiving, however, is that thanks brings us together. Around this time there are often articles about the “blowhard relative” who spouts his or her opinions on politics etc. at Thanks-giving dinner that are unwelcome. I have been spared that, and not because my family agrees on politics, we certainly don’t. I think the best strategy is to say, “Come on, let’s all concentrate on the things that we’re ALL grateful for.” And in this country, we do have much to be grateful for. I came across a New York Times article about Joe LeVine, 96 years old, he’ll be 97 in January. Joe has lived on the same block in Brooklyn his entire life. He served in WWII in the Navy, returning to Brooklyn, married, became a New York City firefighter, and now, because all his old shipmates are gone, spends Veterans’ Day “doing nothing.” One neighbor shared with the rest of the block that they had a WWII vet living on their street and asked people to stop by to show their appreciation for his service. So, the week of Veterans’ Day neighbors stopped by to thank him. Some just dropped off items with cards, banana bread, plants etc. One visit was witnessed by the Times reporter:

Outside were a mother on in-line skates and twin 8-year-olds on

scooters. The girl had made a flag of pink, white and turquoise tissue

paper and affixed it to a paper towel tube and hung it from the

gatepost.

“We are so, so grateful,” the mother, Ariel Clark, told Mr. Le Vine.

“My grandfather was in Auschwitz.” Her voice tightened and sped up.

“My father was born in a displaced persons camp and so” — she gestured

at her children — “without you, none of this would be possible.” She

began to weep.

A droplet formed at the end of Mr. Le Vine’s nose. He squinted. He

shook the hands of Ms. Clark and her children, posed for a picture

with them and went back inside. “My eyes water sometimes,” he said.

I must admit my eyes get wet reading that. What we all have to be thankful for is so much more than what we may disagree about. Let’s all thank God this Thanksgiving for all our blessings. One reminder, our Thanksgiving Mass is at 6:00pm, Wednesday, November 24th, in church, please join us! Happy Thanksgiving. Heart speaks to heart,

Fr. Rob Hyde

ATTENTION PARENTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS & SERVICE PEOPLE:

For many years, we have sent care packages and notes to our college students and service people to let them know that they remain in our thoughts and pray-ers. We are continuing this tradition but are changing it up a bit this year. Due to the cost of sending packages, we have decided to send them a gift card for a coffee, hot chocolate or tea. Just a little something to remind them that they are remembered and loved. It might even help those college students stay alert and awake as they study for those finals.

If you would like your child to receive a note and card from St. Joseph’s, please do the following:

For our service people: please send us their address via email by Sunday, November 28th .

For our college students: 2 ways to take note of:

1. Please provide us with your home address by November 21

st we would be happy to send these out to them when they are home for Thanksgiving. OR…

2. Please provide us with their college address by November 28th and we will be happy to send it to their school

Starting November 21st ~ Sunday Coffee Hour Have questions about the Catholic Faith? Our Faith journey is lifelong and does not end once we become

adults. Enrich your day by joining us for a coffee hour. All are welcome. Discussion will initially be based on the readings until we get a feel for what people would

like to learn more about in our Faith. Throughout the liturgical year we will incorporate other subjects, speakers and topics into weekly discussion. Anyone is

welcome to stop in as little or as much as they would like. Hope to see you there. Sundays at 9:30am in the

cry room.
