Pastor’s Corner

Jesus, I Trust in You

W hen Jesus appeared to St. Faustina beginning in 1931, he sketched out for her as his “secretary” how he wanted us to trust in his mercy and ask for it, and

how he wanted us to share his merciful love with others. Jesus didn’t teach us anything new about his merciful love; he just reiterated what he had taught us in the Gospel. What was new was that the Lord Jesus asked the Church, and that means each one of us, to grow in his Divine Mercy by engaging in the following practices:

• The first is Divine Mercy Sunday, which we’re celebrating today. • The second is to prepare for Divine Mercy Sunday by a novena beginning on

Good Friday. He gave St. Faustina an intention for each day of the novena. The groups, for each of the days, are all humanity, especially sinners; priests and religious; the pious and faithful; those who do not believe in Jesus and who don’t yet know him; our separated Christian brothers and sisters; the meek and humble and children; those who venerate the mercy of Jesus; those in Purgatory; and the lukewarm.

• The third is to pray to the image of Divine Mercy. As we see in today’s Gospel, St. Thomas came to touch Christ’s wounds. The Lord revealed to St. Faustina that he desired an image to be made in which the power of his wounds would be prominent: “One night when I was in my cell, I perceived the presence of the Lord Jesus dressed in a white tunic. One hand was raised in blessing, the other rested on his chest. From an opening in the tunic in the chest, two great rays were coming out, one red and the other clear. After some time, Jesus said to me, ‘Paint an image in accordance with what you see, with the inscription, “Jesus, I trust in you.”’” A little later, Our Lord explained to her the meaning of the two rays: “The two rays represent the Blood and the Water. The white ray represents the Water [baptism], that justifies souls; the red ray represents the Blood that is the life of souls [the Eucharist]. Both rays flow from the depths of my Mercy when, on the Cross, my Heart in agony was opened by the lance.”

• The fourth is to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. This is something that people can pray on Rosary beads. There is no more powerful prayer. Jesus promised, “It pleases me to grant everything they ask of me by saying the chaplet… if it be compatible with my Will.”

• The last and perhaps most important of all is to pray particularly at three in the afternoon, the time in which Jesus died on the Cross, invoking the Mercy of the Lord, Jesus said to St. Faustina, “At three in the afternoon, implore my Mercy, especially for sinners, or at least briefly reflect on my Passion, especially on the abandonment I felt at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great Mercy for the whole world.”

Each of these five practices is meant to help us grow in love of the Lord’s mercy, to seek it, receive it, live in it and share it.

Z Biurka Ojca Jerzego Obraz Jezusa Miłosiernego

O braz ten należy do najbardziej znanych w historii Kościoła i we współczesnym świecie wizerunków Chrystusa ukrzyżowanego i zmartwychwstałego.

Wieczorem, kiedy byłam w celi – relacjonuje to wydarzenie w „Dzienniczku” – ujrzałam Pana Jezusa ubranego w szacie białej. Jedna ręka wzniesiona do błogosławieństwa, a druga dotykała szaty na piersiach. Z uchylenia szaty na piersiach wychodziły dwa wielkie promienie, jeden czerwony, a drugi blady. (…)

Szczególne miejsce w tej ikonografii i kulcie Miłosierdzia Bożego zajmuje łaskami słynący obraz z kaplicy klasztornej Zgromadzenia Sióstr Matki Bożej Miłosierdzia w Sanktuarium Miłosierdzia Bożego w Krakowie-Łagiewnikach.

Godzina Święta we wtorki – 7PM

HelpUSATroops is a local non-profit organization that collects comfort and care items to ship to deployed troops around the world. They also collect cards and letters to send out as well. We would like your support in collecting items to be shipped to the deployed troops.

There is a collection box in the foyer (along with shopping lists). We will be collecting items during the month of April. Sorting is planned for Saturday April 28th and Packing on Sunday April 29th at Am-Vets Post 66 in Wheel-ing IL. We are looking for any help that you are willing to give. We need comfort and care items, cards and letters. Monetary donations are wel-come as well. Any monetary donations would go towards the cost of ship-ping the care packages.

Your efforts will go a long way in our efforts. We want to “send a little piece of home” to the troops. Our soldiers have been stationed far from home in hostile territory for many months now. Our packages show them that we can come together as a community to show them we care. Visit us on the web at www.HelpUSAtroops.com, and follow us on Facebook at Help USA Troops - VNC On the Help USA Troops website you can download: SHOPPING LISTS FOR THE TROOPS, DROP OFF LOCATIONS and OUR MISSION FLYER If you have any questions you can contact:Dawn Hedrick – 847-312-7898 (from HelpUSATroops) or Mary Jo Counley 847-331-4925.

This Sunday was once called “Low Sunday,” a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white bap-tismal robes and returned to their every-day life after a week of intense celebra-tion. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or “The Lord’s Day for Putting Away the Albs,” so no wonder the nickname “Low Sunday” arose. In the old calendar it was also called “Quasimodo Sunday,” after the first word of the open-ing chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or “As newborn infants,” a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo’s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named “Quasimodo” for the feast. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday’s Gos-pel reading, taken from the conclusion of John’s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so “that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that “[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God” (5:1)—what we might refer to as being “born again.” Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sun-day of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. BISHOP ROBERT BARRON April 10 The Fire of His Love:

Prayer and the Life of the Spirit

April 17 World without End:

The Last Things

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

This is the fifth part of our declaration of faith at Mass on Sunday. For a complete account of what happened at the time Jesus ascended into heaven and just before that, read Matthew 28:18-20 and the Acts of the Apos-tles 1:6-11. Just before the ascension of Jesus into heaven he told them that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him and that they should go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them all he had commanded them. He also said he would be with them (the Church) always, to the close of the age. Jesus said the Holy Spirit would come upon them (at Pentecost) and they would be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. As we know, the Apostles did spread the word that Jesus commanded them to all parts of the known world. It is now our job to spread the word to our fami-lies, friends and acquaintances through our words and actions. We are not called just to be nice people but also to tell (witness to) others about Jesus and our experience of him and the pathway to heaven he revealed to us in the Gospels. When we were baptized and confirmed we were given our commis-sion to be witnesses for Christ. The Acts of the Apostles describes Jesus’ ascension into heaven and we are told he will return in the same way. Mathew 25:31-46 describes what will happen when Jesus returns in all his glo-ry as the judge of all nations. We will each be judged according to how we treated our brothers and sisters. Jesus tells us that whatever we did or did not do to our brothers and sisters here on earth we also did or did not do to him. As a result, we will either enter into eternal life with him or go away into eternal punishment. At one time or another we have all wondered what heaven will be like. Some ponder artwork depicting angels playing harps. Others think of gourmet dining or magnificent golf courses and other delights. Some even think it might be boring. But what is it really like? St. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:9 (recalling Isaiah 64:4): But as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him.” And that will en-dure for eternity.

A post card write in campaign is being encouraged across the Chicago Archdiocese to convince Cardinal Cupich to support the archdiocese in divesting from its fossil fuel company investments. Please consider sending a copy of the post card below to: Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, PO Box 1979, Chicago, IL 60690-1979 Pope Francis explains in his Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ or Care For Our Common Home that:

I. 20. Exposure to atmospheric pollutants produces a broad spectrum of health hazards, especially for the poor, and causes millions of premature deaths.

I. 165. We know that technology based on the use of highly polluting fossil fuels – especially coal, but also oil and, to a lesser degree, gas – needs to be progressively replaced without delay.

“The Archdiocese of Chicago, America's third largest by Catholic population, told Reuters it will reexamine its more than $100 million worth of fossil fuel investments.”

"We are beginning to evaluate the implications of the encyclical across multiple areas, including investments and also including areas such as energy usage and building materials," Betsy Bohlen, chief operating officer for the Archdiocese, said in an email. Reuters August 12, 2015 Additional post cards are available by request from McLouis Robinet, by email at [email protected]. April Designated to Raise Awareness of the

Importance of Public Health According to the American Public Health Association’s website, “… every year chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes are responsible for millions of premature deaths…Catching and preventing these illnesses and incidents before they develop is the key to improving our nation’s health.

At St. Joseph the Worker Church, we agree. This is why we are hosting Life Line Screening, the nation’s leading provider of preventive health screenings on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Screenings are fast, painless and affordable. Three key tests check for blocked carotid arteries, an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation, and high blood pressure, which are the three leading risk factors for stroke. Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., yet, with preventive strategies, 80% of strokes can be prevented. Other tests check for abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women. Many events also offer blood tests, including cholesterol, glucose and c-reactive protein screenings, as well as take-home colon cancer early detection tests. Screening packages start at $139. Single tests cost around $70. For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-888-653-6441 or go to www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle or text the word circle to 797979. Pre-registration is required.

Looking for something fun and exciting to do? Want to meet more friends and learn from others? Thinking of helping the parish? If you answered Yes to any of the questions above, then WE NEED YOU! A committee of volunteers is in process. There are many events being planned in the near future. But we need lots of volunteers to make these events suc-cessful. More info to come or call Elaine Simpson at 847-537-2740 or email to [email protected].

Food Drive April 15th & 22nd

During the week of April 15th and 22nd, we will be having a Food Drive for the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. These are the same sisters we had the drive for linens last year, which was very successful and they were extremely grateful.

These delightful, dedicated sisters serve in the poor section of the northwest side of the city of Chicago. Last August they were seeing about 70 families per week, now averaging about 120-150 families. They have asked for our help, and I know the generosity of the people of St. Joseph the Worker will come through for them.

Sister Jessica has some specific needs for their food pantry:

* Canned Fruit * Canned Vegetables * Cereal * Oatmeal * Canned Meat * Canned Fish * Jelly Their pantry receives fresh milk, some cheese, and bread on a regular basis, but the above items seem to be in big demand, and always low on reserves. Any and all food donations, if not above will be gratefully accepted.

We will collect for two weekends, and deliver the following week.

Thank you as always, for your generous support.

EVERYTHING God, of your goodness give me yourself, for you are enough for me. And only in you do I have everything. —St. Julian of Norwich
