Celebrating the Feast of the Ascension: Sun 28th May ‘17
After Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, he stayed on earth for forty days. He still had things to do and people to see.
On each of the five Sundays after Easter, we hear Gospel readings about how Jesus visited his friends. When Jesus visited his disciples they were able to see with their own eyes that he was alive. Jesus let them touch the wounds in his hands, feet and side. He wanted them to believe with all their hearts that he really had died on the cross and risen from the dead. THEY DID BELIEVE AND WERE FILLED WITH WONDER, JOY AND GRATITUDE!
Then Jesus gave the disciples a very important mission. “Go to everyone around the world and tell them about me,” he said. “Teach them what I have taught you. Baptise them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Everyone who believes in me will be saved and will live with me forever in heaven.”
We are disciples of Jesus too. We can go out and share what we know about Jesus with others. We can spread the good news about Jesus by what we say and what we do!
Finally, it was the end of Jesus’ time on earth. Jesus was with some of his friends when suddenly he was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud. They could no longer see him!
We call Jesus’ going up to heaven THE ASCENSION. We go to Mass on Ascension Day to celebrate Jesus’ going home to heaven.
