SAINT JOSEPH’S SCHOOL COMMITTEE

Dear families,

Our year is rapidly coming to an end and as we pass through some of our final school events, it is timely for all members of our school community to take time to reflect on our school year. It remains without question that we thank God for the many brilliant events and activities that our children have been involved in throughout the year. Times of joy, success, challenge and sadness are great experiences for us to grow and unite as a Catholic community. Through each experience we also come to a deeper relationship with God and recognise the presence of God in everyday situations.

May Bethlehem's road rise up to meet you

May the Christmas star light your way

And may there be peace in your heart and in your home.

May you be filled with the joy of this Christmas season

May Bethlehem's road rise up to meet you

May the angel choir ring in your ear "Christ is here, Christ is here"

in those who suffer, and have no food,

in those who have no home at all,

in those who cry out for what I take for granted.

May Bethlehem's road rise up to meet you

May the Christmas star light your way

May you seek His face as all wise men still do

In the love of your family and your friends near and far.

Till you find him and see that God is with you

That God is in you.

Religion is not just about our reaching to God and God reaching out to us, particularly in this time leading up to Christmas. It is a reminder that we are called to make Christmas real, that we are called to bring to reality the message of that original Christmas where Jesus was born in Bethlehem. It is a time to bring love, a sense of community, joy and generosity to all in our school community and to our families.

It is also a time to give thanks and have gratitude for our year. To our children, I congratulate and thank each person for their contribution to our school. Each child has made progress in one way or another and have tried to live up to the values and mission of our school. Each one of you can be very proud of your efforts throughout the year.

I would like to thank all parents, grandparents and friends who assisted the school in any way: the Adviso-ry Committee, Parents & Friends, literacy helpers, reading, excursions, fundraising, working bees and so on. Your dedication to the school and the children is truly marvellous. In particular I thank the P&F and the Advisory School Committee for their ongoing support and commitment to help continue the success of our school community. Their efforts are greatly appreciated. I sincerely thank all of our staff for their continued hard work and dedication throughout the school year. There are times when our staff can feel that their efforts and work are not acknowledged but the real re-ward remains in the fact that in one way or another we have made a difference to the children we have taught; that we have left an imprint on their minds and hearts!

We acknowledge and thank Cheryl Capon, Jonathan Baker, Lisa Wans and Barbara Bird. Each person has contributed to our school and to the culture and environment we wish to create for our children. Whilst they are moving on to new horizons and ventures, they will not be forgotten by the school and by the many children they have encountered!

We have appreciated what they have brought to St Joseph’s. Finally I wish all families a Holy and safe Christmas. May the time of Christmas be a time for peace, forgiveness and love. May the blessings of God be upon all over this wonderful time of the year.

Best of all, Christmas means a spirit of love, a time when the love of God and the love of our fellow men should prevail over all hatred and bitterness, a time when our thoughts and deeds and the spirit of our

lives manifest the presence of God. --George F. McDougall

Final Assembly

Our final assembly will be held this Thursday (14th) afternoon at 2:45pm. On Friday, we have our final School Mass together, followed by a special morning tea for Barbara Bird. Our year six children will then be out for rest of the day, hence our change to assembly. Dismissal A reminder that school will be dismissed on Tuesday 19th December at 3.20pm.

Family BBQ 2018

Next year our family BBQ will be held on Thursday evening, 15th Febru-ary starting at 6pm. All families and children are warmly invited to this BBQ to meet other families and teachers for the beginning of the 2018 year. This will be a wonderful way to commence the school year meet-ing new families, new teachers and catching up with others. It will also be a terrific opportunity for the children to gather together as part of the community of St Joseph’s. If a BBQ doesn’t suit you, then please bring your own tea. BYO drinks, seats etc. Hope to see all families there on Thursday 15th February 2018 at 6pm. Order forms will be sent home in the first week of school next year.

Yesterday the children transitioned into their classes for 2018. Remember, the coming year is an exciting and nervous time for not only our students, but also our teachers. The most important thing parents can do at this age is learn to ask, “How can I help? What kind of support do you need?” instead of “How can I fix this for you?” Be thoughtful about the messages you are sending your kids about this new adventure. Are you allowing your own biases to fill their heads with the idea that next year is terrible and you just have to suffer through it and try to survive? Or are you letting your kids know that it’s going to be exciting, energising, challenging, and new?

School Fees 2018

Each year our fees generally increase to keep in line with the educational CPI and counter ongoing price increases in goods and services. With the implementation of the swimming program this year, which the school and Parents and Friends Committee supported, we’re aware that we cannot maintain this into the future. After consultation with the Advisory School Committee, the recommendation was to introduce a compulsory levy per child to help continue our successful swimming program in 2018. This of course will mean an increase financially for parents regardless of any CPI increases. To this end we, (the school and the Advisory School Committee), have decided not to increase any other fees for the 2018 school year and only introduce the swimming levy in 2018. The swimming levy will be incorporated into the Curriculum Tuition levy as it forms part of the Victorian Curriculum.

This increase will be spread across the following areas: School Fees: (All families. Includes $50 maintenance levy) $1160

Capital Levy: (All families) $210

Curriculum Tuition Levy: (Per Child) P-2 $205

3-6 $240

Grade P-4 Excursion Levy: (Per Child) $70

Gr 5/6 Excursion/Sport levy: (Per child) $75

Please note that school fees are compulsory for all families. We encourage families who may find the pay-ment difficult to come and discuss the issue with us.

Before and After School Care

Earlier in the school year we approached Camp Australia, who facilitate ‘Before and After School Care’ programs, to explore the possibility of implementing this program at our school. In the following months after an initial meeting, we issued a survey to families to see if there was enough interest. The results of the survey were encouraging and after discussion at our Advisory Committee meetings we agreed to at-tempt to implement ‘Before and After School Care’ for our school.

Page 4: St Joseph’s School Newsletter - Warragul 13_12... · St Joseph’s School Newsletter ‘Advance in ... in those who cry out for what I ... Bernard Miron 0427 581 930 Mandy Moore

Following a recent meeting with Camp Australia, the start date for commencement of the program would be term 2, 2018. The next steps required for us to move forward are:

* A site meeting with Camp Australia to approve the venue as suitable.

*The contract and associated documents to be vetted by lawyers through the Catholic Education Office Sale.

*Final ratification from Fr Peter Slater (Parish Priest) and approval from the Catholic Education Office Sale.

If the above steps move forward in an affirmative way, then it would be most likely for the program to com-mence term 2 2018.

Further information will be supplied in 2018 as to the progress!

School Reports

End of year reports will be issued on Friday 15th December. Reports will be addressed to parents but is-sued to all children. The information below is from last year’s newsletter but the details/messages are just as relevant now as they were a year ago! When you receive your child’s report take time to go through it with them. It can be an anxious times for parents and students. Your reaction to your child’s school report can affect the way they see themselves as learners and as people. When you open the school report do you look for strengths or weaknesses first? The challenge is to focus on strengths rather than focus purely on areas that need improving. Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning. If the report indicates that effort is below standard then you and your child or young person have some-thing to work on. If your child is putting in the required effort then you can’t ask any more than that re-gardless of the grading. Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a picture of how your child is progressing as an individual in a social setting. The skills of independence and cooperation are highly rated by em-ployers these days so don’t dismiss these as unimportant. Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about their strengths first before looking at areas needing improvement. Ask for their opinion about how they performed and discuss their concerns. After reports are read and discussed celebrate your chil-dren’s efforts with a special activity or treat. In this way you will recognise progress and remind them that holidays are just around the corner when they can forget about assessment, tests and reports for a while. (Michael Grose)

SACRAMENT OF

RECONCILIATION 2018

This notice is for families who have children who are baptised, are cur-rently in grade two, or above, and who are considering the Sacrament of Reconciliation for their child in 2018. If you are interested and would like more information you are warmly invited to come alone to our parent only information meeting on February 8th, 2018 at 7pm in St Joseph’s Church. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a beautiful celebration of God’s love for us. It is a sacrament of healing. St Joseph’s Christmas Present Appeal

Our School Community, in conjunction with St Vinnie’s, is holding a Christmas Appeal. Our Christmas tree is set up in the Administration area. Decorating this tree will be small gift cards with the gender and age of a child on it. Please select a card from the tree and buy a suitable present. It would be great if you could involve your children in the buying of the gift, asking them what they think would be a fun and age appropriate. Please return your wrapped present, with the tag at-tached, to the basket under the tree. All of the presents will be delivered to St Vinnies in Warragul in time to reach families in our local area for Christmas. As an alternative your family may like to donate a non-perishable food item. This food will be added to Christmas hampers which are being prepared for vulnerable families in our local community.

Every time our school community collects food items or raises money for, and aware-

ness of, those in society who are less fortunate than ourselves, we strive for the com-

mon good. Jesus taught that God asks each of us what we are doing to help the poor

and needy: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of

mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). By working together on Social Justice projects

we are striving to improve the wellbeing of all.

The P&F Auxiliary are supporting the School’s Christmas Present Appeal instead of running a Christmas Raffle. As there is no requirement to purchase tickets or make donations to a raffle, P&F are encouraging families to support the Appeal by donating a wrapped present or non perishable food item to the Christmas tree which is set up in the Administration area.

Managing Christmas Chaos – Michael Grose

Did anyone else blink and miss 2017? December is hard to navigate and as parents it can be particularly

challenging logistically, physically, emotionally and mentally.

The end-of-year school concerts, presentation ceremonies, work parties, school parties, social catch-ups,

Christmas shopping, decorating, more parties ... anyone else exhausted just reading this?

Nevertheless, here we are just weeks away from the busiest time of year, so it’s time to get pro-active

about managing the chaos that comes with Christmas.

1. Get technical Technology has been my saviour in recent years. If it isn’t in my smartphone, it doesn’t happen! As soon as you receive an invitation or notification of an event, enter it into the calendar on your phone. This will minimise the risk of double bookings or at least get you on top of logistics early. For each event I set a

reminder for a week ahead, a day ahead and an hour ahead.

Cozi (www.cozi.com) is a scheduling app that can link multiple users within a family. If you are on Cozi, you can both see important dates that have been scheduled, such as school concerts and end-of-year presentations. Cozi is particularly useful for families, helping everyone to stay across important dates with

much less risk of something getting missed.

There is also the Parachuute app (www.parachuute.com) to help with the logistics of getting multiple chil-dren to multiple locations. Created by two Melbourne mums, Parachuute is a carpooling app that allows

you to tap into your trusted network for help with transporting the kids to their various events.

2. Ask for help There is a reason the saying “It takes a village...” is so popular. It absolutely DOES take a village to raise a child, especially if you are doing it solo. You physically cannot be in two (or more!) places at once, so reach out and ask family, friends and neighbours you trust for help. When I moved two hours away from our family home in Sydney, I didn’t know anyone. But less than a year later, I have a lovely bunch of friends – mostly parents of my sons’ friends – whom I feel confident I can turn to when I need extra help. It may feel uncomfortable, but asking for help is one of the simplest things you can do to manage the busyness of Christmas.

Wellbeing - Michael Tomkins

Gospel Value – Patience

The gospel value of patience is to have the capacity to accept or tolerate a delay, a problem, or suffer-ing without becoming annoyed or anxious. The perfect example of patience to us as Catholics is the season of Advent – we are waiting patiently for the joyful birth of Jesus.

Caring Habits – Listening

Listening is showing that we respect others and are willing to take note of what they have to say. We

can also learn from others, just as they can learn from us when they listen to us. It is also good man-

ners to listen. A good listener is attentive. They make good eye contact, don't interrupt what the oth-

er person is saying and show an interest in what is being said to them.

Page 8: St Joseph’s School Newsletter - Warragul 13_12... · St Joseph’s School Newsletter ‘Advance in ... in those who cry out for what I ... Bernard Miron 0427 581 930 Mandy Moore

3. Lower the high expectations you've set for yourself This was a big one for me. Once I realised that aiming for perfection was only going to lead to disappoint-ment – let’s face it, nobody is perfect! – I relaxed the ridiculously high standards I had set for myself. These standards were borne of parent guilt, divorce guilt, any sort of guilt you can think of. I did the emo-tional and mental work necessary to loosen up and lower those expectations. Why spend hours hand making individual gifts for teachers, coaches and dance instructors when a hand-written and heartfelt note of thanks will make just as much, if not more, of an impact? 4. Parenting down My wonderful therapist shared this concept with me. It’s for those tough days – those times when every-one is a little exhausted, ratty and emotional. You don’t have to serve up a fresh, homemade meal with the perfect ratio of the five food groups. No way! If it’s been a tough day, parent down. That’s what 2-minute noodles for dinner is for. Give yourself a night off from your own expectations.

5. The gift of presence If money is a little tight, the kids won’t mind if there are less toys under the tree. Give the gift of your presence. Make a list of fun, low or no-cost experiences you can share together. Bushwalks, trips to the beach, even an afternoon running around under the sprinkler in the backyard. These are what memories are made of and memories last much longer than the latest Pokemon. I also use this little ditty to keep a lid on gifts: “Something they want, something they need, some-thing to wear and something to read.” Add some fun family experiences into the gift-giving mix and you’ll have happy kids. Christmas can be a tough time of year for all parents. Getting on the front foot from an organisa-tional point of view will stand you in good stead for managing the physical, logistical and emotion-al demands December brings.

Library News - Barb Bird

Overdue Books

Unfortunately we still have 122 children with books currently overdue after many reminders. This accounts for 251 books. If the average price is $12 then we are currently missing $3012 worth of resources. I urge all families to check their emails and help their child locate these resources and remind them to deliver them back to the library promptly. We need to show responsibility and ac-countability. Thank you for your support once again. If you locate a library resource over the holi-days please drop it into the return box at the start of the new school year.

Library Bags

There are lost library bags outside the library. It is worth a check to ensure you have a bag ready for next year. The holidays are a good time to wash bags in readiness for the new year. We still have plenty of bags for sale in the library for a $2 donation.

Farewell

Thank you for all the words of encouragement, best wishes and support as I approach my departure from St Joseph’s. I hope you take the time to read my reflections attached to the newsletter this week. I will really miss being a part of this school. Thank you for all the support offered to me. I look forward to hearing news from St Joseph’s during the coming years.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students and families of St Joseph’s Primary School, not just the present but over the past 40 years that I have been involved with this community. I have been very fortunate to have been accepted, welcomed and valued throughout my career here. I look back with immense gratitude and consider myself to be very fortunate. Deciding to bring my teaching career that I have cherished dearly to an end, has taken me three years to reach. I started my teaching career at St Joseph’s way back in 1977, when the school was a two storey, red brick building on the church block in Witton and Connor Street. Straight away I was made to feel welcome and encouraged in my new career. I left the area for two years, to travel around Australia doing some teaching in Darwin and Mt Isa along the way. I then returned back to Warragul to take up a position again at St Joseph’s, before taking time off to have my family, returning as a relief and part time teacher. My children, Nigel and Jason, attended St Joseph’s therefore I become involved with the school as a parent as well as a teacher. I am proud of how this school accepts people. Our disabled son, Jason, was embraced by this school and is still connected to this school family. This school is a part of our extended family. Throughout my career I have seen much change. We had big inter school sport days, marching before school, rote learning, quieter classrooms, discipline was different, we worked in our own classroom, hand-writing changes, maths was taught differently with the emphasis on understanding concepts more now, more intervention and supports, but we might be a little more time poor now. Teaching has changed over the years. Reports were hand written when I first started teaching. If you made a mistake you had to rewrite the whole report again. The curriculum and teaching methods have changed. Technology and the digital revolution have made their mark. Children have more say in their learning and question everything which when channeled can have a significant and positive impact on their learning. I have needed to change and embrace change but still be true to my philosophies too. I have been privileged to be part of this community in so many wonderful ways. Being involved in the faith education has indeed been a significant component of my teaching, a responsibility I feel very honoured and trusted to have undertaken. A major highlight for me was when I received a Living Witness Award from the Catholic Education Office after being nominated by colleagues. I have now been involved with some families across three generations with children that I once taught now coming back with children of their own. On Grandparent’s day I get to see the parents that were once the parents of the children that I was teaching. Seeing family history develop in the school has been unique and special. I have been fortunate in my role to get to see and develop relationships with children from when they start prep until they end their primary schooling. During my career I have and still am teaching along side past students. Although this has aged me at times it is certainly a rewarding experience. I have been lucky enough to have been involved in the mentor-ing of new teachers. This has helped to keep me up with the times, made me conscious of new strategies, challenged me, whilst re-energising my own teaching. Another highlight was my involvement as Religious Education Co ordinator, a role I valued and took on with massive responsibility. What will I miss? The variety of conversations that are undertaken throughout the day. The precious one liners that children say and do. These are priceless. The children’s enthusiasm and whimsical appreciation of life. It has certain-ly helped me to stay young in my thinking. I will certainly miss the community prayer times as we gathered as a staff to pray and for the many liturgies that I have been involved in. I have been so lucky to be in a work place that gives you the opportunity to grow in faith.

Library News - Barb Bird

I will miss the wonderful literature and the children’s reactions to a shared good book. I will need to find new ways to channel my creativity as I will miss coming up with creative challenges for the students. I will certain-ly miss the friendly greetings and hello Mrs Bird, as I walked through the corridor throughout the day. So what will I do once I pack up? I have no set plans as yet. I really plan to do nothing much although I have close to 40 years of teaching material that I have accumulated to sort through and cupboards to empty out, so I have plenty of declutter-ing to do. I plan to spend more time with our aging parents and to continue to give our disabled son many experiences. We will probably have some more short caravan adventures revisiting favourite places around Australia. Of course I will be reading. I have already offered to continue to cover new library books for the school so that will keep me in touch with what great books are being written and hopefully read. I might even pop back and do some CRT days if I am invited back or when I get bored or I am missing my teaching life or as a student said to me the other day, “ You might run out of money and need to come back to work”. So my teaching career might not really be over. My husband might be a little worried about what plans or projects I might have up my sleeve for him. He retired a couple of years ago so I will be moving in on his territory next year. I will be around more, not just on my days off. My whole family have been an immense support to me throughout my career. What I won’t miss is the paperwork trail- planning documents, work program, meetings, the constant stream of trying new ideas, being answerable to bells, the sleepless nights worrying about how to touch base and connect with students who are not engaged or who are underachieving, thinking of how I could do things better, public speaking and wearing shoes all day. My life journey does not stop when I finish up at the end of the year. I will continue to live and discover my-self and develop new skills with more time up my sleeve to do so. For example, I plan to cook a new recipe each week from the many that I have gathered over the years, now that I will have more time on my hands. Although I have mixed emotions from day to day about leaving St Joseph’s I know that the school will contin-ue to grow and nurture our children. I leave the library after 25 years in this role, in the capable hands of my colleague Bernie Rigano, who has been working enthusiastically right alongside me over the last ten years. I welcome an excited Tania Stanley to the Library role. She has loads of new ideas to try and will soon put her own stamp on the library. I encourage you to continue to show your support. So I finish with some words of wisdom hopefully. I encourage all children and staff to be true to themselves and never stop believing in yourselves. Be the best person you can be, not who your friend or neighbour is; be yourself and develop your uniqueness. Have a go! Stay positive and listen to others before making judge-ments, as most people really do have your best interests at heart even though you might not see that all the time. Treat others how you would like to be treated- constantly ask- What would Jesus want me to do? How can I make St Joseph’s a happy place for everyone? I know I didn’t always get it right throughout my career. I was grumpy at times. I didn’t manage to get some children where I wanted them, or to have all children borrow from our library regularly, however I did my utmost to keep the children’s learning as my focus. I hope when I meet up with you in the street or at func-tions that you will share a moment with me and tell me how you are going. I will look forward to hearing about you all. May the Good Shepherd continue to guide and lead us all. My thanks is extended to everyone who has made my career my vocation. God bless.

Grade 3-6 Swimming

Congratulations to everyone on a great effort at last week’s Swimming Carnival. It was fantastic to see so many students sign up for events this year. Many children had showed much more confidence enter-ing the 50m events following the swimming lessons. Thank you to all the teachers and parents for their help on the day which was much appreciated by myself and Megan Spencer. Age Champions
