NEXT SUNDAY: SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has instituted Sun-day of the Word of God, to be celebrated annually on the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time.

For the Sunday Masses of January 23-24, we ask you to bring your personal Bible to Mass or if you are joining us through livestream please have your Bible with you as you worship.

We want to emphasize the importance of the Bible in Catholic life and encourage one another to read and study the Word of God as a regular part of our lives as disciples of Jesus. During the Mass we will have a commitment and blessing prayer as you hold your Bibles against your hearts.

SANTO NINO MASS Join us in celebrating the Feast of the Santo Nino! The devotion will start with a virtual novena for 9 days, beginning on Wednesday, January 13 through January 21, 2021 at 7:00 PM. A link will be provided on the “SJM Santo Nino Fiesta” Group Facebook Page. Find us on Facebook and click “Join” On Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 10:00 AM there will be a Special Mass held outdoors at the shelter. Church protocol will be strictly observed, with social distancing and masks being required. Although we cannot celebrate in the ways we did in years past, you can still bring your Santo Ninos im-ages with you. There will be a Sinulog, and devo-tees will be able to dance in place at their seats! Thank you for your continued prayers and support. Eucharistic Miracles From the website of Blessed Carlo Acutis. To learn more about Blessed Carlo Acutis visit his website at www.carloacutis.com or to view his exhibition web-site on the Miracles visit: www.miracolieucaristici.org.

Eucharistic Miracle of Santarem, Poland, 1247 Some Popes granted plenary indulgences to this Eucharistic mira-cle: Pius IV, St. Pius V, Pius VI, and Pope Gregory XIV. Still to-day, in the Church of St. Stephen of Santarem, it is possible to ad-mire these precious relics. According to the date recorded in the document commissioned by King Alfonso IV in 1346, on February 16, 1266, in Santarem, a young woman overcome with jealousy for her husband, consulted a sorceress who told her to go the church and steal a consecrated Host to use for a love potion. The woman stole the Host and hid it in a linen cloth that immediately became stained with Blood. Frightened by this, she ran home and opened the kerchief to see what had happened. To her amazement, she saw that the Blood was gushing from the Host. The confused woman stored the Parti-cle in a drawer in her bedroom. That night the drawer began to emit brilliant rays of light which illuminated the room as if it were daytime. The husband, also aware of the strange phenomenon questioned his wife, who was obligated to tell him everything. The next day, the couple informed the pastor, who went to the home to remove the Host and return it to the church of St. Stephen in solemn procession, accompanied by many religious and lay peo-ple. The Host bled for three consecutive days. It was then placed in a beautiful reliquary made of beeswax. In 1340 another miracle occurred. When the priest opened the tabernacle, he found the beeswax vase broken into many pieces: in its place was a crystal vase containing the Blood mixed with the wax. The Sacred Host is now preserved in an 18th century Eucharistic throne, above the main altar. The Church of St. Stephen is now known as the Shrine of the Holy Miracle. Throughout the centuries, on various occa-sions, the Host gave new emissions of Blood and in some cases various images of our Lord were seen in it. Among the witness of this prodigy is also St. Francis Xavier, the apostle of the Indies, who visited the shrine before going on the missions. Every year, since the miracle occurred, on the second Sunday of April, the precious relic is processed from the home of the couple to the Church of St. Stephen. The couple’s home became a chapel in the year 1684. The Eucharistic Miracle of Santarem, together with that of Lancia-no, is considered among the most important. Numerous studies and canonical analysis were carried out on the relics. The Host changed into bleeding Flesh and Blood flowed out of it. Both rel-ics are preserved to this day in the Church of St. Stephen in Santar-em.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19).

Psalm — Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will (Psalm 40).

Second Reading — Your bodies are mem-bers of Christ; glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20).

Gospel — The first disciples saw where Jesus was staying and they stayed with him (John 1:35-42). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

T he stories of the call of Samuel and of the first disciples in John’s Gospel help us begin to understand the nature of

God’s call. It is not a work order from a distant God to carry out a specific task, but an invitation to participate in what God is already doing. The journey begins with God’s intentions and activity. After the initial moment of call, God is shown to be actively leading these ordinary people to partner in God’s work. For ourselves, we might not experience a single or dramatic moment of call. God’s call can take many forms. But like Sam-uel, and like Jesus’ disciples, we are invited into a relationship of trust and friendship with God. We too are invited to employ the gifts God has given us, always in dialogue with our God, in our daily lives.

OUR DEEPEST DESIRES In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus’ first spoken words in the Gospel of John: “What are you looking for?” This penetrating question reverberates throughout John’s Gospel. The disciples who form Jesus’ first community, and many others who meet Jesus during his life, are drawn to him, seeking something they can’t quite name. As Jesus called and formed his community of disciples, he probed their hearts and allowed them to probe his heart. They shared their deepest needs, hopes, and commit-ments. Jesus’ words might be directed to us, here and now. Sometimes we struggle to name what we really want. In our faith journey, in prayer and in lived experience, we learn to share our dreams and also to open our hearts to know God’s dreams. In time, with lots of practice, with many successes and failures, we learn to trust God to shape and to fulfill our deepest desires.

YOUR SERVANT IS LISTENING We hear of young Samuel today, dedicated to a life of service to God, under the guidance of Eli, a Temple priest. Twice, Sam-uel hears the call of God and says “Here I am” to Eli. At last Eli recognizes that it is God who is calling Samuel. When Samuel hears God a third time, Samuel does not say “Here I am,” but “Speak, L , for your servant is listening.” We can see a sub-tle shift as Samuel moves away from announcing his intention to serve and more clearly opens himself to God’s voice. Samuel allows God to take the initiative, and attends first to God’s in-tentions rather than his own. Samuel’s story helps us to remember that accepting God’s call is not only about a new chapter in our personal story. Our ac-ceptance is, more profoundly, a new moment in God’s story. Even in our smallest “yes,” God celebrates our partnership in God’s great work. Through our openness and acceptance, God has new opportunities to bring all of us into loving unity with God.

LECTURAS DE HOY

Primera lectura — “Habla, Señor, tu siervo te escucha” (1 Samuel 3:3-10, 19).

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
