They say that it is not so much that Columbus discovered America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world “stayed discovered.” The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other “discoverers” lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to “the Isle of the Blessed” in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Up-on his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and por-poises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. School News - Wendy Kelly

Kid’s Corner

As I mentioned last week, our teachers participated on Friday in an Inservice with other Diocese of Rockford Elgin Deanery elementary teachers at St. Patrick Parish in St. Charles. The speaker was Reverend Paul Sims an As-sociate Professor of Educational Leadership at Concordia University. The topics of the day were curriculum development, teaching strategies and assessment. Another main goal of the day was to allow our teachers the opportunity to collaborate and share with their grade level peers through a professional learning network. This week, Natasha, David, and Sophia drew our Trifecta winners. They were Audrey Lange $100, Luisito DelRosario $75, and Chrissy Palewski $50. Congratulations! It’s hard to believe it, but our girls’ volleyball is coming to a close. The 8th grade players will be recognized and celebrated at their last home game on Monday, October 15th. We invite everyone to join us! A huge thank you goes out to our 3rd and 4th grade families for hosting this month’s Bears-Packers Bingo! Thank you to our parish community for supporting this im-portant fundraiser for our school! Next Friday our PTC will host a Halloween Party from 6-8. Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting the school office. It is sure to be a fun-filled evening for every-one! Last week, our students in preschool through 3rd grade visited Kuiper's Family

Farm. Here are a few of the highlights from that trip. For more pictures, check out our Facebook page! Wishing our Parish community a week filled with many blessings!

Trusting in Jesus - I can’t count the number of times that someone said to me while I was going through a hard time or question-ing what He wanted me to do in life: “Just trust in Jesus.” Immediately the question that I want to return with is: “HOW?!” And if I ever asked that, the response was either vague or not applicable to the situation. Because no matter how good natured someone is in trying to offer you or me “spiritual advice” by trusting in Jesus- we are practical people and we need practical ways of trusting. So let’s look at how we learn to trust our parents. Do you trust your parents driving a car? Most of us would say “yes.” Why? Be-cause we have ridden in a car with them countless times AND they have gotten us to our destination safely. Well, the same principle can be used for Jesus. When we look back at difficult moments in our lives that we have come through, we can sometimes feel alone. But what if we invite the Lord- “Jesus show me where you were.” Let Him take you back to the difficult time and show you where He was because in doing so we gain trust for Him for either future difficulties OR discovering that He will always lead us to green pasture.

"The pace is picking up as we conclude the Eucharistic Prayer with the Great Amen. We are all focused at this point on the Holy Eucharist and we begin our final preparations for receiving the Lord in Holy Communion. What better way to prepare than to pray in unison with “the words Our Savior taught us”? And so, standing, we all pray the “Lord’s Prayer”, also known as the Our Father. There are seven petitions in the Our Father, as the Cate-chism states: “2803 After we have placed ourselves in the presence of God our Father to adore and to love and to bless him, the Spirit of adoption stirs up in our hearts seven petitions, seven blessings. The first three, more theological, draw us toward the glory of the Father; the last four, as ways toward him, commend our wretchedness to his grace.” I could list the seven petitions, but that would be too easy. Can you figure out what they are? If you cannot, go find your copy of the Cate-chism of the Catholic Church and read paragraphs 2803-2854. I will leave you with one last consideration about the Lord’s Prayer during the Mass. Pope Benedict XVI points out in his commentary on the Lord’s Prayer that “we are at our most attentive in prayer when it is prayer of thanksgiving or prayer of petition.” Ask God for good things, because God is our good Father.”
