The St. Louis Green Business Challenge is a business engagement program that assists companies in integrating sustainable business practices into their daily operations. The program works for building owners and tenants, supporting companies new to the concept of sustainable business operations and those who have already engaged with sustainable options and are ready to fully integrate.

Empowering this effort is a unique partnership between the St. Louis Regional Chamber and the Missouri Botanical Garden. Leveraging the Chamber’s broad business network and the Garden’s sustainability resources, the Challenge influences the business, educational, governmental, and non-profit sectors of the St. Louis regional economy. Challenge companies benefit from customized coaching, including site visits and ongoing phone and email support, provided by expert staff of the EarthWays Center, the Missouri Botanical Garden’s sustainability division. These services support Challenge participants in evaluating and implementing sustainability options in ways that optimize outcomes, cost-effec-tiveness and engagement in accord with each company’s goals and culture.

Regular interaction with all participants is fostered at monthly seminars, where companies share their best practices, processes and outcomes and learn new strategies. An online resource bank provides examples of policies, surveys, communications tools and best practices that are generously shared by Challenge participants. These frequent Challenge activities and regular communications maintain a robust regional professional network of sustainability leaders, representing a wide range of career specializations.

In 2015, the Challenge provided five unique tours to participants to learn more about recycling and renewable energy in our region. The Challenge thanks the following tour hosts:

• EPC, Inc. for a tour of their 65,000 square foot E-Scrap Processing Center in Earth City, MO, that showed the proper way to dispose of electronics. The facility collects and processes over 590,000 pounds of electronic waste and is certified to the standards of ISO-14001 and the National Association for Information Destruction.

• Waste Management for their tour of the renewable natural gas facility at the Milam Landfill in Madison, IL. The facility creates pipeline-quality natural gas from landfill gas and produces enough fuel to fill 200 of Waste Management’s compressed natural gas collection trucks each day (Tour group photo below).

• Ameren Missouri for their tour of the O’Fallon Renewable Energy Center, their first solar center and the largest investor-owned utility scale solar facility in Missouri. The more than 19,000 arrays generate 5.7 MW of energy for Ameren customers.

• Materials Lifecycle Management Company for their tour of their waste to fuel facility in Bridgeton, MO. MLMC manages waste for reuse and recyclable value, and a proprietary system turns all other materials into fuel cubes used in manufacturing power production.

• Datotel for their tour of the data center in downtown St. Louis. Datotel provides colocation, data protection, cloud services and insourcing IT services to their clients. Their data center helps clients with power management and energy utilization of their information technology.

The Green Business Challenge EXPO, sponsored by UMB and Laclede Gas, featured 40 vendors with products and services to assist businesses with implementtation of sustainability strategies. Attendees were able to connect with specialists in energy efficiency, lighting, alternative transportation, landscaping, recycling, and more.

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE GREEN BUSINESS CHALLENGE LEVELS

EDUCATION & NETWORKING ACTIVITIES

Challenge Apprentice companies choose options from a menu of basic sustainability policies and practices to start the process of greening business operations. In 2015, Apprentice companies formed green teams, adopted sustainability policies, converted to purchasing recycled-content office and janitorial paper products, installed high efficiency lighting and identified alternative transportation options. Apprentice participants met twice, for a “Sustainability 101” training seminar and a report-out session to share accomplishments and learn from Challenge Leaders.

Challenge Leader participants work with a categorized, point-based Scorecard to guide their choices of activity. Leaders submit scores twice during the Challenge year: a Baseline Score of existing measures and a Final Score tallying all strategies in place within the year. Each company competes with itself to achieve the greatest gain. From their baseline scores, Leaders are grouped into Acorns (new to sustainability efforts) and Oaks (more experienced) and identified as building Tenants or Owners.

Challenge Champion companies are those that have completed work with the Leaders scorecard in past years and commit to continued implementation of deeper sustainability strategies. Champions work with a scorecard that guides efforts such as completing a greenhouse gas inventory, reducing energy use by at least 25%, and striving toward a 75% or greater waste diversion rate. Challenge Champions also take on the prerequisite of working with the High Performance Building and Biodiversity strategies that are options for Leaders.

The Challenge launched a new program to address sustainability within the range of operational requirements unique to local governments. A pilot class of five Missouri and Illinois municipalities learned to incorporate sustainability policy and practice fundamentals, guided by a fusion of the Challenge Apprentice menu with metrics from OneSTL, the regional plan for sustainable development.

Challenge scorecards detail a comprehensive range of sustainability options that address the kinds of operations common to every business. Each company earns points by acting on their selected strategies. Challenge participants can choose to:

• Conduct outreach by expanding the culture of sustainability within and outside the organization (green teams, purchasing policies, internal and customer/public communications, community partnerships)

• Reduce energy (energy efficiency in HVAC, equipment and lighting, renewable energy)• Improve indoor environmental quality (air quality, green cleaning, building comfort)• Reduce waste (recycling, paper reduction, food service, disposables)• Reduce water (fixture conservation, stormwater management)• Provide clean transportation alternatives (carpooling, bike-to-work, transit, travel)

In addition, unique Challenge components engage companies in special regional initiatives: • The St. Louis High Performance Building Initiative is a regional project organized by the St. Louis Regional

Chamber and the U.S. Green Building Council – Missouri Gateway Chapter to increase the square footage of third-party verified green space in the St. Louis region. Activity encourages companies to benchmark their building energy use and to take the “25 x 20 Pledge” in our voluntary regional campaign to reduce energy consumption 25% by 2020 using ENERGY STAR benchmarking tools. The initiative also encourages the exploration of LEED and Sustainable SITES certification programs.

• Better Business Through Biodiversity engages companies with strategies to evaluate and improve factors affecting natural habitat. This Challenge focus significantly contributes to BiodiverseCity St. Louis, a community-wide initiative to connect people to nature and to promote, protect and plan for biodiversity throughout the region. The Challenge supports efforts to identify biodiversity assets in property and personnel, and to better understand impacts each company has on plants, animals and habitat.

• New Mini-Challenge short scorecards encouraged 2015 participants to: • Ramp up employee outreach and education in Employee Engagement.• Promote environmentally friendly commuting through Trailnet’s Shift Your Commute, the carpooling

services of RideFinders, and the Citizens for Modern Transit Try & Ride program.• Join the Missouri Recycling Association’s Strive for 75 campaign toward a 75% statewide waste

diversion rate.

At the completion of each St. Louis Green Business Challenge program year, scorecards and case studies are submitted and points are tallied. Each company competes with itself to improve sustainability performance, and all efforts are voluntary. To honor achievements across the program’s multiple levels of participation there are several award categories.

• Award of Achievement – given to all participants who advanced their sustainability efforts.

• Award of Merit – presented to the top finishers at Champion and Leader levels. The Champions with the highest point totals earn Awards of Merit. Leaders receive Awards of Merit for the greatest gain in their respective groups (Tenant/Owner, Acorn/Oak).

• Additional recognition appears in award graphics for high point achievement.• Circle of Excellence – designates companies

achieving at least 150 points.• Star in the Circle of Excellence – honors companies

achieving at least 250 points.

ACCOMPLISHMENTSAs part of a program to reduce energy usage by 25% by 2020, the Missouri American Water Service Center is installing a new energy-efficient HVAC and hot water system, with a projected savings estimated to exceed $42,000. Across our water treatment operations, pump replacements and operational enhancements are helping to reduce energy usage.

Missouri American Water worked with the Missouri Comprehensive State Energy Plan to include a section on the water-energy nexus – the relationship between how much water is used to generate and transmit energy, and how much energy it takes to collect, clean, move, and dispose of water. As a result, the state plan calls for reducing the energy intensity of water and wastewater operations across the state.

Reaching out to more than 340,000 customers through their water bills, the Green Team shared good ideas on a variety of topics through simple brochures (printed on recycled paper), including:

• Information on protecting watersheds and supporting organizations that help preserve our rivers.

• Conserving water by fixing leaks and protecting internal plumbing from cold winter weather.

• Encouraging customers to reduce waste by signing up for paperless billing, which increased by ten percent this year.

INNOVATIONSWings Over Water. In partnership with the World Bird Sanctuary, Missouri American Water brings watershed protection education to community events – from St. Louis Earth Day to the St. Louis Science Center. Birds of prey, up close and in flight, illustrate the importance of protecting our rivers – to protect drinking water quality and wildlife.

Prescription Drug Disposal. Missouri American Water helped start the Missouri Prescription Pill & Drug Disposal (P2D2) program – a nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping unneeded medicines “out of our rivers and off of our streets.” This year, drop-off boxes are available at 14 police departments in St. Louis County for residents to dispose of unneeded prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Water Matters educational sponsorship. In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and Nine Network of Public Media, Missouri American Water is a sponsor and active participant in Nine Network’s “Water Matters” series, focusing on the importance of protecting and preserving our state’s water resources.

ACCOMPLISHMENTSDuring the annual Earth Day celebrations at Creve Coeur and Chesterfield, Milkweed, Purple Cone Flower and Black Eyed Susan plants were handled out to employees to plant at home.

In September two Milkweed Gardens were planted by employees at both the Chesterfield and Creve Coeur sites.

3.3 acres of manicured lawn was replaced with a prairie at the Chesterfield site.

Monsanto employees, contractors and families volunteered over 330 hours to the 2015 Operation Clean Stream event.

A household electronics collection event was hosted for employees, resulting in more than 15,000 pounds of electronics being recycled.

INNOVATIONSIn 2015, Monsanto announced a multi-year commitment to helping Monarch Butterflies. In September, small Milkweed gardens were planted at both Creve Coeur and Chesterfield campuses. One of the volunteers raises Monarchs and released several in celebration of the event.

Monsanto purchased new trash/recycle bins for both campuses. With this investment, we are hoping to see a decrease in the contamination of our single stream recycling.

Monsanto was one of the first companies to sign the American Business Act on Climate Pledge. Our GHG Operational Footprint Goal is to reduce crop protection greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 22% on a per product basis by 2020 (baseline 2010). This represents a cumulative reduction of 45% from 2002. We also committed to increase irrigation water efficiency across operations, saving 30 to 80 billion gallons of fresh water every year by 2020 (baseline 2010).

After our successful pilot of installing three water bottle filling stations last year, it is now standard practice for all new construction and any water fountain updates to become water bottle filling stations.
