Archdiocese of Saint Louis Statements re: COVID-19

From the Desk of Fr. Brian Hecktor …

Dear St. Mark Parishioners,

Hope you had a happy and safe 4th of July. Thank God for our nation and the freedoms we enjoy, especially the freedom to not only worship within our church walls, but the freedom to take the Good News into the world and share it with others, as well as live the values taught to us by Christ, such as patience, forgiveness, generosity, and charity. Our parish did apply for the Paycheck Protection Program loan, which we did receive! This loan will cover 8 weeks of payroll and utilities. If it is used as intended, it is entirely forgivable. This is welcome news as collection revenue has been somewhat lower, and as Bandwagon Bingo Hall closed its doors for good and we have lost our Bingo fundraiser indefinitely. Last year, Bingo generated about $130,000 for our parish. We will use the loan well, and our Bingo Committee is looking into other possibilities for continuing this very important fundraiser. Some interesting and very inspiring Saints have feast days this week: St. Maria Goretti on Monday, St. Augustine Zhoa Rong and his Companions on Thursday, and St. Benedict on Saturday. Look them up and read all about their lives and heroic witness to the Faith.

God bless you and have a good week! Fr. Hecktor

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Tuesdays

after 8 am Mass to 9 pm

SAINT MARIA GORETTI (1890-1902) Feast Day: July 6

Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, confirmations, graduations, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Goretti, the only mother ever to attend her child’s canonization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propositioned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion.

The Annual Catholic Appeal unifies us as Catholics in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Each year we demonstrate we are one Church in our efforts to assist those who are suffering and abandoned. Catechetical programs introduce our young children to the love and peace of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Our newly ordained priests join their new parishes with enthusiasm and great hope.

Your support means thousands will find grace and mercy through the Annual Catholic Appeal, not because those we serve are Catholic, but because we are Catholic. Please consider a gift today.

lonely and marginalized during this difficult time. When we are called on in times of need, let us faithfully serve

you in our neighbor. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dear New and Returning Servers, We would like to start a new method for scheduling servers for Masses. If you would like to continue serving (and I really need you to!), please fill out the server sign up sheet. Mark your preferences for Mass. We will then make a serving schedule and send it to you. Please return the sheet (mail, drop off, or email [email protected]) to me or Christina Sanders at the Parish Office (4200 Ripa Ave., StL, 63125). Sheets may be obtained from the Parish Office. Thank you and God bless you. Fr. Hecktor

Tithing, your gift to God. The contribution figures for Sunday, June 28, 2020 collection were not available at the time of the early submission deadline set by the publisher because of the Independence Day (4th of July) holiday. The figures will be published in next weekend’s bulletin.

For the last couple of months, St. Mark has been mailing the Sunday bulletin to some parishioners who requested such due to their inability to pick up bulletins at the church building, because of coronavirus restriction. This mailing will end with the June 28 bulletin. If you would like to continue to have bulletins mailed to you on a weekly basis, please contact Christina at 314.743.8602 or [email protected].

St. Mark School Families: Starting on July 1 your Together We’re Better gift card purchases will begin to be applied toward the 2020-2021 school year. If any parishioners are buying on behalf of a school family, please be sure to give the family name at the time of the purchase. Thank you!

Parish School of Religion will resume again this Fall on Mondays at 6:30 pm. We are in need of PSR Teachers for our upper grades. These positions are paid, and the requirements are a basic knowledge of our Catholic Faith and a desire to serve. Please contact Fr. Hecktor (314.743.8609) or PSR Coordinator Julie Dwyer (314.743.8602) if interested!

The 50+ Club will begin to meet as soon as things go back to “normal.” At that time, we will make up for birthdays and have a barbeque. Questions? Call Mike at 314.276.5767.

Ladies Guild News … Yes, ladies it’s true we will finally be having a meeting on Wednesday, August 19 at 6:30 pm! We are planning on starting off with an old-fashion ice cream social. If weather permits, we may possibly meet outdoors and enjoy a beautiful summer evening to kick off the 20/21 year. Since this will be our first meeting for a long time we thought we might begin with up dating our roster and paying the dues for the year. Dues will remain at $7.00 as they have been for the past several years. We look forward to seeing all of you and catching up on what has been going on in all of our lives these past few months. Come join us and put on your happy face for an evening of fellowship and fun.

Sts. Peter & Paul Soup Kitchen will be put on hold until further notice. We are still waiting to hear when we can start up again.

RED ROSES BOUQUET OF LIFE FOR THE UNBORN

St. Mark Church offers expectant parents, grandparents and friends an opportunity to add a red rose in the Bouquet of Life vase at Church for those expecting a baby. The vase and extra roses are located on the table beneath the Mother of Perpetual Help icon on the far side of the choir area. Each rose has a ribbon tag with space to write the names of the expectant parents and the due date of the unborn child before placing it in the vase.

We entrust our unborn children to Mary’s loving heart.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, the truth; Where there is doubt, the faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand;

To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

ST. MARK PARISH PRAYER CHALLENGE Week of July 4 - 10

Submitted by parishioner Cathy Oberbeck

Dear God, Thank you for this day and forgive us of our sins. Bless our families! When in danger, please keep us safe! May we always forgive and love one another. May we always reach out to You and speak from our hearts, knowing Your way is not always our way, but it is the BEST way! Bless the sick and dying and their caregivers. At times it can be difficult, so please let us see You and be You to one another. Enable us to be a mirror of Your love to others today and always! Amen. Please watch this space each week for a new prayer, submitted by adult members of our parish, our school and our PSR program. We will pray the selected prayer aloud just prior to all of that specific weekend’s Masses.

In these trying times, we can all certainly benefit from more prayers!
