Ron’s thoughts….. For many of us, it is difficult to walk into a Church, even our own parish Church. Maybe the thought comes into our minds: God is looking at me. How does he see me right now? Was I good this week or maybe not? Sometimes when we walk into church we are concerned: Are others looking at me? There might be someone here who has seen me at my worse. There might be someone who has heard stories that I cannot deny. Do I belong here? Am I where I don’t belong because of some of my actions? I often hear, we are members of the Body of Christ, but, honestly, sometimes I think I might be a toenail. For many of us it is difficult to walk into church. But we need to be here. The relationship with God, that each of us has been given as a gift if we want it, flows through the Church, the Saved Community. It is through the Saved Community that we offer Christ on the Cross to our Heavenly Father. It is through the Saved Community that we receive Jesus’ Body and Blood. We need the church to help us move towards that relationship. We need the church to help us see that God is real. We need the church to help see that God is merciful. Always remember, it is difficult to walk into a Church. But God is here. We need Him. We need His Mercy. We need the strength of His sacraments. We need to walk into the Church because we need the strength and the courage He provides. WE NEED HIS GRACE SO WE CAN WALK OUT OF THE CHURCH WITH HIM. Walk the talk. Be Peace! A cup of Joe . . .

Greetings in Christ, all! It was just a few years ago last Thursday that my Mom went to be with the Lord. Of course I am biased, but I think she was extraordinary. I worked for a while on a couple different ideas to share her with you, but in the end, it hit me that perhaps the best idea is to give you some parts of the homily I shared for her funeral. I ask her to pray for us at St. Mark and Holy Family eve-ry day and I want you to know about the woman I believe is praying for us. So, without further ado, here are some portions of the homily I gave at my Mom's funeral. She saw the Lord in it all…not just the beautiful baby gig-gling, but in the horrors and crucifixions of being a broken person in a broken world. I can’t tell you what that meant and means to me to be loved and raised by a woman who saw the Lord in everything. *** Mom loved Jesus. With every cell in her body, she loved God. Because of that, she loved us all with an inten-sity that is impossible to describe. Her sincere conviction that God loved her put a steel in her heart that was absolutely, positively unbreakable. Be-cause God loved her so deeply and because she loved Him back, she could weather any storm of gossip, hateful com-ments, neglect, trials or tribulations. In the words of Prov-erbs 31, she laughed at the days to come. *** We, as a family were with her at the end and no kid-ding, Mom didn’t just die, Mom was finished. Right after she took her last breath as we were looking at her tired, worn out body, my sister Laure pointed out it was perfect: Mom had used up every cell in her body. For 77 years Mom grabbed every moment that God offered her in life and she seized it: she laughed like no one else, she cried with intensity and a depth that would break your heart. She sang with gusto, she prayed with fire, she worked like a crazy woman and hugged you as if the world was end-ing. She traveled the world and gazed on wonder after wonder, meeting people and transforming them on every populated continent…I can’t tell you what it was like to live with and around such a person. It’s hard not to give her resume. It’s hard not to tell you the extraordinary things she accomplished: every joy, eve-ry pain, every experience God threw at Mom…but that’s not her. Her love for God and her trust in God’s love for her is what is important and the best thing about her. In the last days, I would hold her hand and whisper to her over and over saying “I am filled with gratitude for you.” I was and I am. She Shined. God bless you and thank you for letting me serve as your priest!

Welcome Matthew—Begins Oct. 30 The Church has a three-year cycle of Scripture readings and each cycle focuses on a particular Gospel. This year was Luke and next year will be Matthew. Precisely at 4 pm, November 30, the Church will begin Advent and start a new year (2020). On that first Sunday of Advent, we will begin new cycle of readings: Cycle A -- the Matthew cycle. Fr. Dave will be offering three 90 minute classes on the Gospel of Matthew, beginning Wednesday, October 30. The first class will provide some background on the Gospels and provide answers to “what is a Gospel and who wrote them?” The second class (Nov 6) will focus on what is unique to Matthew. The third class (Nov 13) will look at the meaning of selected passages of Matthew. The classes will start Wednesday, October 30, in Sr Joan Parish Center from 7 to 8:30 pm.

St. Mark Men’s Club Join the men of St. Mark in fellowship and service here at St. Mark. Our first event will be a Michigan vs. Michigan State Football watch party on Saturday, November 16th (time to be announced). Food, fun, football squares and more. This will be an opportunity to determine where the group will be going in the future. First regular monthly meeting will be Tuesday, December 3rd 7p.m. (following 6:30p.m. Liturgy). All men of St. Mark are wel-come. For more information contact Deacon Ron at [email protected].
