FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR . . . Dear Friends and Fellow Parishioners: Last Sunday, as I listened to Jesus heal the deaf man with the words “Ephata” - Be Opened - I found myself begging the Lord to work a similar miracle and heal any tone deaf-ness which might be mine. When I saw this morning’s headlines in the Sun Times about seminarians declaring Cardinal Cupich “tone deaf,” I decided to share with you how I became thus and to apologize for the consequences. I had a great Dad. He was very talented and a lot of fun. But, he also had a trigger temper which could be quite fero-cious. Since I was the oldest child, I was the first to experi-ence it. It terrified me. But, as I got older, I found myself reacting to his rage with a similar rage and screaming back at him. This went on for years. It was only when I began exploring the history of my family and realized the wretched childhood my Dad endured that I finally appreciated what a good guy he was and how fortunate I was to have him. We were great friends by the time he died - just a few months before I became pastor at St. Martha. But my childhood experience left me with my own fierce temper, which could be triggered by anyone whom I consid-ered a bully. I went through high school during the Second Vatican Council and entered priesthood fully imbued with its values. So, when popes and bishops came along who strongly reacted to its values and tried to reset the clock of Catholic history backwards in various ways - including pun-ishing theologians and threatening to excommunicate or refuse Holy Communion to those who dissented in any way from Church teaching - I considered it an abuse of their authority and found myself reacting with a rage that I tried very hard to contain (though I suspect that no one had any idea. I usually kept my thoughts to myself). The last straw for me was when the Vatican “disciplined” Archbishop Hun-thausen of Seattle and removed him from office because of his pastoral style. I was consumed with anger at such an abuse of power by the leader of a Church I love. Then I had to reason with myself. I realized that I was wasting my time with angers that consumed me, because the objects of my anger didn’t even know I existed and could have cared less about how I felt. That too would have enraged me, but I decided that the only way to let go and move on with my life was deliberately to take back any authority I ever gave the ecclesiastical bullies over me - including authority I was taught to believe they had over me - and react to them the way Dorothy did in the Wizard of

Oz: “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.” It worked. I was freed of my angers, and it has been thus to this day. But the downside of this is a certain tone deaf-ness When leaders in the Church I love or leaders in gov-ernment in this country I love have shown themselves to be bullies and/or abusers of people in any way, I am still en-raged at the way their victims are treated. This is especially so with regard to the children - both victims of sexual and other abuses and of being caged like animals at the Mexi-can border. I have thought it and felt it - but not deeply enough to cry for them or to cry out on their behalf. This is the tone-deafness I prayed over last Sunday. All I can do is to tell you the truth. I am deeply angered when anyone - especially a cleric - uses his position to abuse others - especially innocent children. I am angered at the Pharisaism and the hypocrisy of Church leaders who, for 40 years - were loyal to popes whose ecclesiology bol-stered their conservative resistance to the changes mandat-ed by the Second Vatican Council. They were absolutely and unquestioningly supportive of the Pope But now that we have a Pope who is primarily pastoral - like Archbishop Hunthausen was - they are “correcting” him, lying about him, and denouncing him as a heretic. So much for their self-serving loyalty to the Pope. In addition to denouncing the Holy Father, Cardinal Vigano, formerly the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, also made denigrating remarks about Cardinal Cupich. Yet I remember the day he installed Cardinal Cupich as Archbishop of Chicago. I was present when he warmly praised him and endorsed him as a fine leader for our local church. I believe that the whole point of the Incarnation - of God’s becoming One of us in Jesus - was divine empathy. There is a difference between sympathy and empathy. As I have shared with you in the past, I can sympathize with the pains a woman goes through bringing a child into the world, but I cannot empathize. This is because I will never have the experience myself. But I CAN empathize with children who are victimized, having experienced abuse when I was a child. So I do feel for every one of them. And as a mem-ber of the Body of Christ and of the clergy who they were taught to trust and who so totally violated that trust, I whole-heartedly apologize to them and pray that this scourge in the Church will come to a permanent end. I am certain that one thing which would help would be to have women in leadership positions in the Church, and I wholeheartedly pray for that as well. Pray for me as I do for you every day.

Yours sincerely,

Fr. Dennis

Lord Jesus, bless this backpack and the student who carries it

as they begin a new school year.

Help them to discover and develop the gifts You have given them.

Allow them to be the best students they can be, reaching out to others and set-

ting good examples to all they meet.

As this student carries this backpack, may they be reminded of Your love and

care that surrounds them each day.

Give them confidence when they are anxious, comfort when they are afraid
