JJuly 21, 2019 ~ Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners: I want to thank you once again for the warm welcome you gave me last week on my first weekend here as Pastor of this beautiful Parish. I
already feel very much at home here. Let us always pray for each other. The primacy of prayer, of intimacy with the Lord, is what we see in today’s beautiful Gospel of Martha and Mary. We hear that Jesus was a dinner guest at the home of Martha and Mary. Martha was busy getting the food and the table ready, while Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to His words. Understandably Martha feels that Mary should be helping her with the chores. And Jesus says: “Mary has chosen the better part, and she will not be deprived of it.” Jesus is not diminishing the good work Martha is doing, but takes this opportunity to teach us about what must come first, the font from which all our activity flows. Saint John Paul II said that prayer is to our faith what air is to our lungs. Our faith will suffocate without prayer. It is not that all the good things we are doing for our families and for others every day is not extremely important, but we do them better when we take time for prayer. How many times throughout the Gospels we hear of Jesus going off by Himself to pray? It was the source of His strength and an expression of His union with the Father. Prayer is thinking about God; it is raising our hearts and minds to God; it is having a conversation with God. And most importantly it is listening to Him. One of the most beautiful, powerful and effective ways of doing this is to spend some time before our Lord Jesus truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, listening for His gentle voice in the depths of our hearts. As Saint John Paul II put it, “Jesus is the answer to every question that troubles the human heart.” And He is so available to us right here in the Tabernacle every day. Vacation time is a wonderful opportunity to rejuvenate ourselves, not only physically & mentally, but also spiritually by spending more time in prayer. And when life gets so busy that we feel there just is no time to pray, St. Mother Theresa had some profound words of wisdom: “Prayer does not always demand that we interrupt our work, but that we continue working as if it were a prayer. It is not necessary to always be meditating, nor to consciously experience the sensation that we are talking to God, as nice as this would be. What matters is being with Him, living in Him, in His Will. To love with a pure heart, to
love everybody, especially to love the poor is a twenty-four hour prayer.” What a beautiful way to live. May God bless us all. Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Matthew J. Furey

WHAT ARE THOSE MORMONS ALL ABOUT? Thursday, July 25, 7-9:00pm in the Nativity Center
They've been our neighbors on Spackenkill Road for many years, and they prefer to be called "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." But what are they all about? What are the origins of this uniquely American religion? What do they believe? What are some of their customs? The Ecumenical Committee of St. Martin's invites you to come and find the answers to those questions and more. The presenters will be Scott Ey and Bruce Hawks, past Stake Presidents who oversaw 8 congregations in the Hudson Valley, including the one on Spackenkill Road. Refreshments and conversation will follow the presentation. All are welcome.
This summer Ignite will be having Holy Hours in different locations. For more information e-mail
