From the Desk of Deacon George Newton:

All of us are concerned about our own well-being. And, we should be, our Creator designed us to be fully functional and have a free will. That being the case, why do so many of us follow harmful physical health habits? It is easier to be, and more enjoyable to be, healthy, not sick. That being the case, why do so many of us have harmful mental habits such as not

reading and studying helpful material rather than junk, or even more harmful stuff and thinking about pleasurable things that create a harmful mental

attitude? And most important of all , why do we allow our spiritual lives to go to waste because we don’t follow Christ’s teachings very well, and we don’t fully accept the

revelations He has made to us? Stop and think! We all have 168 hours in each week and we can spend every hour as we choose. Now, if we spend some time in prayer, religious practice, religious studies, caring for our family, and others, well believe it or not, we still will have plenty of hours left for all the other things we want and need to do. Take out all the weeds and culti-

vate the plants so that God can call you “A Master Gardener”.

Deacon Jeff Mayer’s Homily of May 13, 2018!!I WAS IN COLORADO SPRINGS RECENTLY, VISITING MY GRANDDAUGHTER AND HER HUSBAND. WE HAD A GREAT TIME HIKING IN THE MOUNTAINS ALTHOUGH THIS OLD BODY ACHED TERRIBLY THE NEXT FEW DAYS. ON SUNDAY MORNING THERE WAS A CATHOLIC CHURCH DOWN THE ROAD FROM MY HOTEL WITH A 7:30 MASS. AM. SO WE DECIDED TO ATTEND. BEFORE MASS STARTED – IN THE SCHOOL GYM – A GENTLEMAN NAMED CHRIS CAME FORWARD TO AN-

NOUNCE THAT AFTER AT LEAST THREE RESCHEDULED DEDICATIONS THEY COULD ANNOUNCE THAT THEIR RESTORED CHURCH WILL BE DEDICATED ON MAY 23. AFTER MASS, I STOPPED TO TELL HIM THAT AS THEIR PAIN WAS ENDING, WE AT ST. MARY IN DEFIANCE WERE BEGINNING OUR OWN. MY FOCUS – CENTERED ON THE INCONVENIENCE AND PROBLEMS - WAS MISDIRECTED HIS RESPONSE WAS VERY REASSURING – HE SAID THAT THERE WERE, INDEED, MANY CHALLENGES, SURPRISES AND DISAPPOINTMENTS THEY WERE MORE THAN OFFSET BY GOOD THINGS. THE PARISH WAS BROUGHT CLOSER TOGETHER, LIFE WAS SIM-

PLER, AND PEOPLE LEARNED TO WORK TOGETHER. SOME EVEN WERE NOT ANXIOUS TO LEAVE THE SIMPLE COMFORT OF THE GYM. CHANGE IS NEVER EASY. NOT EVEN WHEN ITS PLANNED FOR AND ANTICIPATED AND CLEARLY FOR THE BETTER. FOR THE APOSTLES IN THE FIRST READING AND IN THE GOSPEL THE CHANGES THEY WERE GOING THROUGH WERE NOT PLANNED. THEY WERE NOT ANTICIPATED. AND I’M SURE, IN THEIR MINDS THEY WERE NOT GOING TO BE FOR THE BETTER. JUST BEFORE THE PASSOVER FEAST JESUS WAS HONORED IN A PARADE AS HE CAME INTO THE CITY. THEIR LEADER – WITHIN THE SPACE OF ABOUT 24 HOURS – WAS ARRESTED TRIED AND BRUTALLY EXECUTED. THEN – SUDDENLY- IN THEIR DARKEST HOURS- HERE HE WAS EATING WITH THEM, TEACHING THEM EVEN MORE AND SIMPLY BEING WITH THEM. THEN ONE DAY, THEY LEAVE THE CITY, WALKING AND TALKING AS THEY HAD SO OFTEN FOR THREE YEARS. JESUS COMES TO A STOP. GIVES SOME FINAL INSTRUCTIONS AND SLOWLY, PEACEFULLY ASCENDS OUT OF SIGHT. WHAT WERE THEY EXPECTED TO DO? JESUS HAD GIVEN THEM EVERYTHING THEY NEEDED.HE TOLD THEM – YOU WILL FACE DEMONS – OF DOUBT – NO MATTER – YOU WILL BE OK.THERE WILL BE SNAKES OF OPPOSITION – THEY ARE NOT GONNA MATTER EITHER. PEOPLE WILL FEED YOU THE POISON OF DISSENTION – YOU WILL NOT FALL FOR IT. YOU WILL RECEIVE THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - YOU WILL BE MY WITNESS. JESUS TAUGHT THE APOSTLES ALL THAT THEY NEEDED IN ORDER TO PREACH HIS GOSPEL OF LOVE AND CARING FOR EACH OTHER. IT WAS TIME FOR HIM TO LET THEM TEACH THE REST OF THE WORLD. EVEN IN THE FACE OF DIFFICULTIES. AND THE FAITH OF CHRIST HAS HAD LOTS OF DIFFICULTIES AND DIVISIONS, PERSECUTIONS AND JUST PLAIN OLD APATHY. YET, HERE WE ARE. WE, THE CONGREGATION OF ST. MARY’S DEFIANCE OHIO, HAVE EVERYTHING WE NEED. RIGHT NOW, IT MIGHT NOT FEEL LIKE IT. SOME OF OUR CHURCH FAMILY ARE NOT HERE. SOME DON’T LIKE THE CHANGE. SOME ARE UNCOMFORTABLE. NOTHING IS LIKE IT ALWAYS WAS. IT IS INCONVENIENT AND UNCOMFORTABLE. IT IS BACKWARD FOR ME HERE IN THIS PULPIT - EVERYTHING IS OPPOSITE, NONE OF YOU ARE SITTING WHERE YOU ALWAYS SET AND THE CHOIR IN ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CHURCH. BUT THERE ARE GOOD THINGS HAPPENING. FIRST IT TOOK AND IS TAKING THE EFFORTS OF MANY PEOPLE TO GET THIS FAR – COMMIT-

TEES FOR PLANNING DESIGNS, FOR RAISING THE FUNDS AND FOR SORTING THROUGH AND STORING ALL THE STUFF THAT WAS STORED IN SACRISTIES AND THE BASEMENT. PARISH MEMBERS WHO HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY STORING ARTIFACTS FROM THE REMODEL OF THE CHURCH IN THE 1960’S ARE BRINGING THEM BACK FOR RESTORATION. BUT HE RESTORATION IS NOT ABOUT STUFF. IT IS NOT ABOUT HAVING A REPAIRED, CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL WORSHIP SPACE. THAT IS THE BY-PRODUCT OF A CHURCH FAMILY WORKING TOGETHER. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR US TO CONTINUE TO WORK TOGETHER. WE CONTINUE TO NEED WORKERS FOR THE FOOD PANTRY. WE CONTIN-

UE TO NEED YOUNGER PEOPLE TO LITERALLY DO THE HEAVY LIFTING FOR THE FURNITURE BANK. WE CONTINUE TO NEED EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS TO VISIT THE ELDERLY OF OUR PARISH – OUR OWN MATRIARCHS AND PATRIARCHS. WE CONTINUE TO NEED RELIGIOUS ED TEACHERS. WE CONTINUE TO NEED ADULTS TO ATTEND OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR FAITH. WE CONTINUE TO NEED FOLKS TO SING AND READ AND SERVE AT MASS ON SUNDAYS. CHRISTIAN FAITH CALLS US NOT ONLY TO PRAYER BUT TO ACTION. IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT BEING IN A BEAUTIFUL BUILDING AND PRAYING FOR AN HOUR. (AND YES, THERE ARE FOLKS RIGHT HERE IN DEFI-

ANCE WHO BELIEVE WE ARE NOT INVOLVED ENOUGH IN THE COMMUNITY) GOD CALLS US TO BE INVOLVED. JESUS QUIETLY AND PEACEFULLY LEFT THE APOSTLES. HE LEFT THEM WITH WORK TO DO. HE LEFT THEM WITH TEACHINGS OF LOVE AND COMPASSION. HE SENT THEM THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HELP THEM WHEN THEY HAD DOUBTS AND DIFFICULTIES. IT IS NOT ALL EASY – THERE DEMONS OF DISTRUST, SNAKES OF CONSUMERISM AND POISONS OF INDIFFERENCE THAT YOU AND I FACE EVERY DAY. WE ALSO HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WITH US TO SUPPORT US IN PRAYER AND ACTION. (SCRIPTURE: ACTS 1:1-11 AND MARK 16:15-20)

GREAT HAPPENS AT HCCS! Did you know... Our 6th, 7th & 8th grades were busy last week reading and gardening with their PreK buddies. Check out Facebook for some photos! • Grade 1 students are becoming great authors with a new program called "Write Steps"

Mr. Bill, our Custodian, read “The Grouchy Ladybug” to Young 5’s last Thursday to go along with their bug & in-sect study. Then, their first butterfly hatched! They are patiently waiting on the other 5 to emerge! • In the 3rd grade, the chick eggs are incubating and in 4th grade the students have been busy with some great STEM activities. We had 50 Moms & Sons participate in the Mother/Son event at PuttPutt Golf and Games. It was a blast!
