From the Desk of Father James

Dear Parishioners, It has been a pleasure getting to know you all over the past week. I still have a lot to learn and I’m very excited to begin this new role as your pastor. We are now on the verge of the month of Sep-tember, a month traditionally dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The seven sorrows are: (1) the prophe-cy of Simeon, who took the child Jesus in his arms with joy to proclaim that he was to be the salvation of the world, but also that a sword of sorrow would pierce the heart of Mary; (2) the flight into Egypt, when Joseph led his family away from their home into a foreign land for their safety; (3) the search for Jesus in Jerusalem, when Mary and Joseph thought they had lost their young son; (4) when Mary meets Jesus on his way to Calvary; (5) the crucifixion, with Mary standing at the foot of the cross when Jesus gives his mother us believers as he says to Mary and St. John “Behold your Mother,” and “Behold your son;” (6) Jesus being taken down from the cross and placed in the arms of his loving mother; and (7) the burial of Jesus, where we can imagine Mary gave her son one last kiss before the tomb was sealed. These events in the life of the Blessed Mother can bring us to tears. But they recall that in our own sorrows we are not alone - rather, we are accompanied by Mary whose life, like ours, was not without difficulties. And great-er still, these sorrows of Mary remind us of the confidence she had in God who has a plan to turn our sorrows into joy. I encourage you to take some time during this month to meditate on the Seven Sorrows - you can find many dif-ferent resources on the internet. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us! Fr. James

The Diocese of Erie, along with all dioceses of the United States, has policies and procedures in place to address the national problem of child abuse and to aid in creating safe environments. The diocese is committed to on-going screen-ing and training of paid or volunteer persons who have reg-ular contact with our children and youth under the age of 18. It is committed to the yearly in-servicing and training of our children, youth and parents regarding touching-safety and safe environment. To see what the Diocese of Erie is doing to keep children and youth safe, check out http://www.eriercd.org/protectyouth.htm For more information, contact Cindy Zemick at the diocesan offices at 814-824-1195.

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments- Docu-

mentation for Safety: Working alongside the Bishop, the Office for the Protection of Children and Youth reinforces the ongoing implementation of policies and procedures that pro-tect children. All employees, volunteers and clergy in the Diocese of Erie who work with children must undergo crimi-nal record checks. The diocesan Policy for the Protection of Children and Youth screening guidelines and abuse preven-tion training programs emphasize the importance of knowing the employees and volunteers who have access to children in our schools and parishes. Parents should remain vigilant in insisting that those with access to their children have gone through an application process and obtained the required clearances and trainings before being granted access to their children. Visit https://www.eriercd.org/childprotection/ to see what documentation and training is required for those who work with children and youth in our parishes/schools/agencies.

Marienville/North Clarion Food Pantry: Items need-ed are, boxed dinners, boxed potatoes, boxed stuffing, dry pasta, cake mix, dish soap, baked beans, Jell-o or pudding, items need to be in the Church before Septem-ber 20th. Please remember monetary donations are al-ways welcome. Your generosity helps families in our community. Please no expired food items!

A Family Perspective Relationships live in a careful balance. If a person changes, the balance is altered requiring a shift in the relationship. In today’s gospel Jesus announced a change and Peter resist-ed. Sometimes, those we count on for support may actually get in the way. Jesus told Peter: “You are an obstacle to me.”

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot receive you at this moment sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen

We know these are difficult times for every-one, including you and your family. Saint Mary/Saint Ann Church remains committed to the spiritual care of our parishioners and the faithful in our com-munities. Although how we do that is changing tem-porarily, our purpose remains the same.

The Parish Office is now open. Please be aware that like any family, our par-ish has ongoing operating costs. We are entirely de-pendent upon you to meet those financial obligations. Please continue to make your weekly offertory gifts by mailing them to the church. If you have any ques-tions, contact the Parish Office at (814) 744-9919. May God bless you, your family, and the world.

Prayer in Time of Pandemic

Lord Jesus, You came to bring salvation to our world. You humbled yourself to accept death on a cross. Be with us as we confront the spread of the coronavirus with courage and hope. Be present to the sick and to those who accompany them in their suffering. Strengthen our medical professionals and caregivers; comfort families who are separated from one another. Protect those who are at risk of the virus in their work. Grant wisdom to our civic officials and perseverance to scientists. Spare us from the ravages of this illness and console us in our uncertainty and fear. Unite us in hope, enlighten us in faith, and give us the grace as a Church to love one another as You have loved us. Through the in-tercession of our Heavenly Mother, we make this prayer as we place our trust in You. Amen. Imprimatur, April 8, 2020 The Most Reverend Lawrence T. Persico, J.C.L. Bishop of Erie

Priests as Good Shepherd Prayer Jesus, Good Shepherd,

You sent us the Holy Spirit to guide Your Church and lead the faithful to You through the ministry of

Your priests. Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, grant to

Your priests wisdom in leading,

faithfulness in teaching, and holiness in guarding Your Sacred Mysteries.

As they cry out with all the faithful, "Abba, Father!" May your priests be ever more closely identified with

You in Your Divine Sonship and offer their own lives with You, the one saving

Victim. Make them helpful brothers of one another,

and understanding fathers of all Your people. Renew in Your priests

deeper faith, greater trust in You,

childlike reliance on our Mother Mary, and unwavering fidelity to the Holy Father and their

bishops. Holy Mary, intercede for your priests.

St. Joseph, protect them. St. Michael, defend them.

St. John Vianney, pray for them.

Amen.
