Weekly Message

Dearly Beloved Parishioners,

Grateful Living, Joyful Giving

How blessed we are at St. Mary Magdalene knowing that God is good all the time, and all the time God is good! The widow in today’s gospel was commended by Jesus for her sac-rificial giving because she contributed all she had. Next weekend, we shall be introducing the “Grateful Living, Joyful Giving” program to parishioners at our Masses.

The past year has been one of tremendous change for our parish with the arrival of the priests of the Missionary Society of St. Paul. Due to the welcoming spirit of our parish, we are registering new parish-ioners, our ministries are expanding and we are growing new ones. Early this year, we conducted a sur-vey of where we are as a parish. The survey has brought us to a better understanding that our parish-ioners need more opportunities to meet and grow in their faith apart from the regular Sunday attend-ance. The result of the survey has led to a Master Plan that is still in progress. When the Finance Council presented the budget for this fiscal year, we made a very conservative budg-et based on the economic situation of our environment at this time. Even as we take this into consider-ation, we do not want to slow the growth of the various ministries. We want to be able to meet the needs of all those who come to our parish looking for growth in their faith and for their children. We also want to do this in a very comfortable way. That is why it is so important to maintain our facilities and make some improvements where they are needed. My sincere thanks to the many parishioners who are already giving sacrificially. We need every parish-ioner to do this. We must increase our Sunday offertory collection in order to continue to expand our mission as a parish community. I urge our new and returning parishioners to support the parish gener-ously. I realize that much has already been asked of our long-time parishioners. God bless your giving. Nevertheless, I ask that you consider making more sacrifices as our faith matters. Prayerfully consider increasing the level of your financial support to the parish. There are so many improvements needed in the parish. We want to pay off our debt. We want to expand our ministries. We want to add visual tech-nology to the sanctuary to enhance our worship. We will be able to achieve these and many more goals with more parishioners committing themselves to a grateful living, joyful giving. I count on all parishioners to make sacrifices and increase their weekly offering. You will be receiving a brochure in the mail this week. Please review its contents and prayerfully con-sider how you can support our parish even more. Our goal through this program is to substantially in-crease our regular offertory contributions. Other parishes that have conducted similar programs have seen their offertory increase between 20% and 40%. Please review the suggested guidelines for giving which are enclosed. A special Commitment Sunday will be held at Masses next weekend, November 14th and 15th, where each family will be asked to make a prayerful sacrifice and complete a Commitment Card of the gifts they will share to support the works of St. Mary Magdalene Church. Thank you so much for your involvement in the life of our parish. Jesus praised the widow in the gospel today. The widow in the first reading also had her needs met as she generously provided for the need of the prophet Elijah. God cannot be outdone in generosity. Let us live our lives gratefully for God’s provi-dence and also give joyfully in support of the Church. I am extremely appreciative of everyone’s past generosity to the parish. I thank you in advance for your support, understanding, generosity and kind-ness.

ANNUAL TRAINING FOR CURRENT EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF

HOLY COMMUNION

Our annual refresher training/update for current Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) will be

held on Saturday, November 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 am in the church. At this session we will review current

guidelines and procedures and introduce some new proce-dures.

Some EMHCs have served for a long time and others are fair-ly new, but regardless of experience all current EMHCs are encouraged to attend in order to stay current on our proce-dures, especially new procedures that will be implemented

soon, and to share your experiences and questions with other EMHCs.

No need to register in advance, but we will ask attendees to sign in so we will know who attended.

VIRTUS Training

Church will be held on Thursday, November 19th, 2015 from 6-9 P.M. in St. Mary’s Hall.

The Archdiocesan Office of Safe Environment requires that all volunteers and employees of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic

Church attend VIRTUS Training.

If you took the Protecting God’s Children class before 2010, you MUST take a Keeping the Promise Alive refresher class to main-tain your VIRTUS status. If you do not complete the refresher,

you CANNOT participate in anything involving minors.

Please make every effort to maintain your VIRTUS status. Visit www.virtus.org for registration. If you have any questions,

please contact Linda Enloe at (281) 389-1820 or e-mail Linda at [email protected].

Blood Drive — November 15th, 2015

Start building up your blood for our next blood drive, Sunday, November 15th, 2015 in the Family

Life Center from 8:30 A.M.-2:30 P.M. Donating blood is an excellent work of mercy that costs you nothing but a pint of blood and less than one hour of your

time. Plus, you can feel good about saving up to 3 lives with your 1 donation. Make an appointment at the back of the church after Mass, or sign up online at giveblood.org. If it is more convenient for you, call Loretta Schermock at (832) 640-9357 to make an ap-

pointment. All blood types are needed.

Share Your Blessings is a Christmas gift program, oper-ated by the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Gal-veston-Houston, that provides toys and other gifts for

children ages 0-17. Last year, we provided Christmas pre-sents for more than 971 children, but we couldn’t do it

without your help! For many of these children, this will be the only gift they receive this Christmas. We want to serve both the children and their parents so they don’t have to make a choice between Christmas presents or other ne-

cessities this holiday season.

Starting the weekend of November 7th, 2015, you may choose an angel from the tree in the narthex, purchase a gift for that child, and bring the unwrapped gift by De-

cember 7th, 2015. You may drop off your gift before Mass under the tree in the Narthex or at the parish office

Monday through Friday.

"Grateful Living, Joyful Giving" Program

Over the next few weeks, you will be hearing about the upcoming “Grateful Living, Joyful Giving” pro-

gram at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. This Offertory Program is very important as we move for-

ward with the mission and vision of our Catholic Community. We, as a parish family, have changed so many lives in our community as we have served God's people. In order to continue our mission and minis-tries, we encourage all parishioners to spend time in prayer and discussion with your family reflecting on the needs of the parish and your current giving level. We look forward to seeing all of our parishioners at

Mass, especially during our special Commitment Weekend – November 14th & 15th, 2015. If you have any questions regarding the “Grateful Living, Joyful Giving” program, please feel free to contact Wanda

Wreaths Across America is a national non-profit organization founded in 2007 with a mission of “Remember, Honor, Teach.” Part of that mission is carried out by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies in Arlington National Cemetery, as well as veterans' cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states, ceremonies at sea, and 24 national cemeteries on foreign soil.

Each month, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic students pick a com-munity service project. For the month of December, our 5th graders are raising money for Wreaths Across America. For every $15 raised, a wreath will be placed on a veteran's grave at the Houston Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, December 12. To donate money towards the wreaths, please go to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org, click on the “Sponsor Locally” link, type in “St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Community” in the “Find a Fundraising Group” search field, then click on the “Donate” link. You can also drop off donations at the front of-fice of the school.

The students are also raising funds by selling t-shirts honoring our active duty military and veterans. Each shirt purchased also funds a wreath. The campaign page for the t-shirts is www.booster.com/smmcs-waa and will continue until November 19th.

The 5th graders would like to invite everyone in our St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Community to join them on December 12, 2015, as they place wreaths on the graves at the Houston Nation-al Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston TX).

Adoration News

The next devotion to the Holy Souls will take place in the chapel on Monday, Nov. 9, at 7:00 P.M. All

are invited to pray for the souls of our loved ones who may be in Purgatory awaiting our prayers. The love we showed them while alive can be carried forward after

their physical death.

November is a good time to consider spending some time with Our Lord in Adoration. He waits in our chapel

for us to come and give Him thanks, ask forgiveness, give adoration, place petitions, and pray for others and our-selves. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure of His company

during this earthly life.

Youth Ministry News CCE / Faith Formation Classes: With week #7 of our CCE classes coming up, we are “one-third” of the way through the school-year! Classes will be held on Sunday, November 8th at 3:00pm // Tuesday, November 10th at 6:00pm // Wednesday, November 11th at 6:00pm in the St. Paul Center. Parents are reminded that as we endure “cold and flu” season, ALL students who are ill MUST be symptom-free for a full 24 hours before being sent to CCE {just like school}… We want to do everything possible to keep the catechists and students safe. This is why we allow for up to six (6) absences from CCE! We do still have limited space for students who are not yet regis-tered for CCE / Formation classes; parents should contact the Formation Office immediately to check on ses-sion / grade-level availability.

“Youth Nights”: We are pleased to offer two “Youth Nights” per week, one for middle school and one for high school. The high school youth event will be on Sunday, November 8th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm; the middle school youth event is on for Thursday, November 12th from 6:00pm – 7:30pm… Both of these events are held in the Youth Room. All our youth events are open to all youth (Catholic or not); bring a friend, or come make a new one, and get to know Carissa Bull, our new Coordinator of Youth Ministry. The Youth Room is located in the St. Paul Center – at the corner of Isaacks Rd. and Ferguson St.

First Reconciliation Meeting: Our second Reconciliation session is coming on Monday, November 9th from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. It is required that a parent and the student attend all remaining sacrament sessions! Parents should take their child(ren) to the 2-story Education Building and find their grade-level class… After that, proceed to either the Church {parent meeting in English} or the Family Life Center {parent meeting in Spanish}. THE STUDENTS DO NOT ATTEND THE PARENT MEETING - they go to grade-level classes in the Education Building. Please make sure Chapters 1, 2, and 3 are complete and that your child is learning the required prayers. If you have not yet purchased the blue sacrament book for each child, please come by our offices to do that as soon as possible. The sacrament book is $25 per book (cash or check, payable to SMM).

Youth Adoration Hour: We have scheduled a special opportunity for our youth to spend an hour in Eucharistic Adoration on Monday, November 30th from 7:00pm – 8:00pm in the Chapel. Fr. Felix will lead this experience and deliver a special message to the youth; we will also have music to enhance this time of prayer and worship! We will follow the adoration with a pizza dinner in the Family Life Center.

The Last Things: Death, Purgatory, Heaven, & Hell Tuesday, November 10

Shopping With Jesus Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation On my day off recently, I was getting groceries and heard White Christmas being played in the store. This was on All Souls Day. To be fair (from the direction of the sound) it was probably a toy or a doll, not the store intercom, but it’s still unnerving to hear White Christmas on the 2nd of November (especially in Texas, right?). It got me thinking: can we as Catholic Christians strive to make the holiday shopping season different this year? We who are baptized are chosen by God to live our lives differently, in a way that reflects our Christian values first, not the values of this world. Because we are constantly bombarded with advertising and messages from the merchants and media about what is important, it takes a deliberate, conscious, and consistent effort for us and disciples of Jesus to decide what is best for ourselves and our families in light of Christ and the teachings of his Church because the voice of the culture is often far louder than the sound of our faith echoing in our ears. We must turn to God and listen. There is nothing wrong with shopping if it is done—as everything else—with serious consideration to how Jesus wants us to think and act so that we may live as God’s children, living the baptism we have received. Shop with Jesus in mind! Simple suggestions to a more Christ-valued holiday season: 1. Think about how you are going to choose God-centered values this holiday season and discuss your

ideas with your loved ones. Start doing this now so the “Christmas rush” does not swallow you whole! 2. Do everything you can not to shop on Sundays—not in the store and not on the Internet. There is ab-

solutely no Christmas present we need enough to break God’s commandments to get it. The world will tell us otherwise, and we will have to plan ahead so that we don’t find it “necessary” to shop on Sunday. It’s time for us to obey the 3rd commandment and tell the world “No, we will not live this way; we have given ourselves to Christ.” Make exceptions according to what is truly necessary.

3. Consider what gifts would truly enrich the lives of the recipients. Acquiring more items to possess is not always the best form of gift. Perhaps there are other ways to give, such as giving experiences rather than things. Visit, have a good meal together, experience something new with friends and loved ones. Pray together. Go to a church function together. Or offer some form of food as a gift. Per-haps offer a portion of your gift to a charitable cause. For example, our parish blanket drive begins in January. Why not give a card saying that you will donate a new blanket to the drive in someone’s name?

4. Go out of your way to be kind to the people in the stores. Thank your checkout person at the begin-ning of your transaction, not the customary, bland “thank you” at the end. Allow others to go first. Smile at people. Put things back where you found them. Be heroically patient. People notice these things. No amount of preaching matters if we don’t preach with our lives.

What will you do this year to fill your shopping experiences with the love of Jesus? Share with me your insights: [email protected]. Be sure to sign up for FlockNotes on our parish home page www.st-mm.com so you can stay informed.

Everyone welcomed!

Especialmente para nuestra Comunidad Hispana

Queridos parroquianos,

Viviendo Agradecidos, Donando Alegremente
