October Newsletter
There are so many things to talk about in this newsletter as it has been a busy and
exciting new year. Welcome to Mr. Fraga (Gr. 4) and Mr. Da Costa (Gr. 5), sorry that I
mixed up their grades in the September Newsletter. Welcome also to Mr. Vidal who
will be our Child and Youth Worker from George Brown College working with our In-
termediate students and our students who require support in the school yard. We
also have a new Social Worker for the school, Ms. Fernandes and a new Educational
Psychologist Dr. Fernando. Coupled with our already amazing staff, we have a great
team to meet the needs of your children.
We had an excellent turnout to our Parent Council Meeting (CSPC) on September
20th. Thank you to our council from 2016/2017, I cannot say enough good things
about their dedication and their wish to represent our parents and support all of our
students in the school. This year we have a larger council led by Co-chairs Mr. Matos
and Mr. Gikas. Ms. Almeida has returned as our Treasurer and Ms. Matos has re-
turned as our Secretary. Welcome to returning and new members to the council Ms.
Tamburro, Ms. Silva, Ms. Mendonca, Ms. DaRosa-Periera, Ms. Gikas, Ms. DaSilva, Ms.
Viera, Ms. Henriques, Ms. Patino, Ms. Dubak and Ms. Andrade.
Below is a picture of “Fraga’s Fours” and the food they collected for our drive. It is a
picture of our faith in action. Thanks for a great start to the school year.

Drop Off and Pick Up—School Safety
Thank you to all of those parents who have worked hard with us to create a safe Drop Off and Pick Up Zone at the back
of the school in the morning. From 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. there is no parking at the back of the school, that area is reserved
for Drop Off. Please drive right up to the area and drop off your child, they will be greeted and welcomed into the
school. Please drive away from the area to make room for the next car and child for drop off. The students are much
safer when everyone adheres to the rules. Thank you for your efforts to not park on the east side of Bristol Ave. where
no parking is allowed. If you need to park your car, you can do so beyond the second laneway that frames the school.
It is not that we do not want you at the school, it is that our small area cannot house all of the parking and we need to
keep traffic flowing at a steady and safe pace. Thank you for all of your efforts to keep our Drop Off safe and flowing.
At Pick Up please pick up your child and move your car as soon as possible. Again, we want the area cleared and safe
as soon as possible. Parents and Guardians are reminded that students should be picked up after school at 3:30 p.m.
We try to dismiss right at the bell, but sometimes some students hold back the others when they are disorganized.
Any children that are not picked up by 3:45 p.m. are brought to the office and their families are phoned. Please make
sure you pick your child up on time after school.
Thank you for your Support and your extreme generosity. The children had a wonderful day to run and
thanks to you, they raised $605 for the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research. Thank you to Ms.
Brum-Rebelo and the rest of the teachers for organizing the run. Well done SMA!
Lunch at St. Mary of the Angels
We have adjusted our Lunch Schedule at S.M.A. and we
have adjusted well to change. The students go out to play
from 11:15 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. and then return inside to eat
their lunch after washing their hands. Things seem to be
going well for the students are hungrier when eating later
and this means that they are eating more of their lunch. A
reminder to students in Grade 6-8 signing out for lunch
that you are out from 11:50 until 12:15 p.m., then you can
sign back in. Thank you to our Lunch Supervisors for cre-
ating a positive change and to our ECE and EAs for assisting
in the ELP lunch rooms. Litterless, Nutritious
Lunches
Just a reminder that we are
a Litterless Lunch School,
that means that students
are taking home what they
do not eat and that students
are asking to use reusable
containers for their food
that are labeled with their
name so that they can be
reused. Thank you for help-
ing us set and achieve our
ECO goals.
Fire Drills and Lock Downs
To keep our students and staff safe in the event of an
emergency, we will be conducting four Fire Drills and
four Lock Downs throughout the course of the year.
During the drills we will safely exit the building or
shelter safely in place depending upon the situation.
We will practice different scenarios so that the stu-
dents will be confident and know what to do.
Orange Shirt Dress Down Day
On Friday, September 29, St. Mary of the Angels participated in our
very first Orange Shirt Day, a day to honour equity, diversity and
Indigenous people. We used the day as a Dress Down Day and raised
$315 to be donated to Caribbean Hurricane Relief and for Earth-
quake relief in Mexico. Thank you again for your generosity and
recognition of the needs of others and contributions of Indigenous
culture.
Thank You Parents
Thank you parents for completing all of the forms and getting them
into the office. From Pizza, to Pita Pit, to Media forms and the very
important health forms, you got them all into the office. We appreci-
ate your support.
Thank you also for the incredible amount of canned good and clean-
ing supplies that were collected for St. Francis Table. Brother John
could not believe the generosity of our parent community. We had
over 30 boxes piled high with canned goods and cleaning supplies.
Thank you for exemplifying the virtues of hospitality and gratitude.
Photo Re-take Day is on Tuesday,
October 24 Photo re-take will take place on the 24th, we will
also have the opportunity for sibling pictures.
We will be sending a note home if you would
like your children’s pictures taken on that day.
Halloween Dance Party
On Tuesday, October 31st we will be having a day of cos-
tumes and dance. Students are encouraged to dress up
for Halloween. We ask that students not wear a full mask
during the day for we need to identify all students and
many masks make sightlines poor and can lead to acci-
dents. Students are asked to wear costumes appropriate
for our Catholic school. Please work with your child to
create imaginative or clever costumes. It is going to be a
great day. We are asking for a $2 donation to help defray
the cost of the professional dance leader for the day.
