SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES: Last Sunday.... gathered in the Ossenbrink Center to Watch There Be Dragons. A fictional movie based on the real life of St. Josemaria Escriva. The movie strongly focused on the healing power of prayer and forgiveness. Escriva was born in 1902 and as a young priest in Spain faced growing anti clericalism and violence leading up to and during the Spanish Civil War. Eventually crossing the Pyrenees mountains on foot to safety in Andorra. Escriva was the founder of Opus Dei and believed that every Christian has the opportunities for drawing

close to and imitating Jesus, practicing charity, patience, humility, diligence, integrity, and cheerfulness with family, marriage, work and all our daily activities. St. Josemaria Escriva was canonized on October 6, 2002 by John Paul II. Join us this Sunday, March 15th at 3:00pm in the Ossenbrink Center when we focus on conversion and repentance. Lent is a time for confession, to make amends and start a fresh. Our movie pick this week is Arrival which tells about how a linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appears around the world.

American Legion Post 668 is sponsoring a pancake breakfast on Sunday, March 22nd from 7:00 am to 10:30 pm at the American

Legion hall. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, juice and milk. Free will offering will be accepted.

How appropriate that the Lenten season began at a time of calmness at HTC. The basketball season has ended and spring sports are simply in practice mode. We are so thankful for the opportunities that are students have to pray and reflect as part of their school day. Fridays, in particular, are days of special Lenten reflection. Ms. Schumaker leads the elementary students through the Stations of the Cross. At HTC’s junior/senior high our students have the opportunity to gather in the school chapel to pray the rosary. Please keep our young people in your prayers for them to grow in their love of Christ.

CRS Lenten journey travels around God’s beautiful world to meet three girls and their families. When you donate to CRS Rice Bowl, you share your life and your abundance with these families and others like them. Your generosity puts nutritious food on their tables and helps them lead healthier lives. As Jesus teaches us in the Gospel story of the loaves and the fishes, your small offering can feed many, and what may seem like a little, can actually be a lot. This year we are introduced to three girls from three different parts of the world. This week we meet Yvone.

CRS has changed my life—and the life of my family. -Gaudencia, Yvone’s aunt

“CRS has changed my life—and the life of my family,” says Gaudencia, Yvone’s aunt. “Before, I could tell Yvone wasn’t healthy. But now, she’s active.” Gaudencia is proud of what she’s learned from the CRS program about healthy eating habits. She has taught her family to vary what they eat and include vegetables with every meal. Yvone’s grandfather, Eliakim, suffers from diabetes. The improved diet has helped make him healthier. “What I have learned is really good, and I have seen positive changes in my health,” says Eliakim. “I have benefited a lot from Gaudencia’s participation with CRS.” Eliakim also thinks the improved diet gives his grandchildren more energy for school and play. If the family is ever short an ingredient or has extra food, they borrow from and share with neighbors in the spirit of community. It’s that spirit and good nutrition that gives Yvone, her family and friends, a strong foundation from which to pursue their dreams and live a healthier life.

The 6 Characteristics of an Everyday Stewardship for Lent – Grateful Happy Birthday! It may or may not be your birthday now, but I know it will be coming up at some point. I hope you receive many cool presents and get to spend quality time with friends and family. On special days like birthdays, Christmas, and

anniversaries, it is good to celebrate. After all, we need some fun and celebration in our lives. But what about the day after? Presents remain, but the presence of others may be over, and it is back to the daily grind. Yesterday, you were filled with gratitude. You hold the memory of yesterday still close so that fuels you for the day. However, how about 2, 3, or 4 days from then? The truth is that many joys in this life cannot stay with us forever. They belong to a certain place in time. We will have our memories, yet those thoughts will never be a suitable substitute for the real thing. There is one joy that remains throughout all our days: the joy we find in Jesus. What He gives us does not fade. The amazing thing about what He offers us is that it also provides a lens through which we see all things. Now we can see the smallest rea-sons to be grateful. We no longer have a life where we go from one celebration to another with the ordinary in between. All life and time are extraordinary! All gifts, great and small, are precious. This offering seems too good to be true, so what’s the catch? Like all gifts given to us, for the gift to have meaning, we must be willing to receive it. The choice is yours. You can live in the ordinary, or you can revel in the extraordinary, now and forever. ~Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Everyday Stewardship

Nicole Herdrich, St. Boniface parishioner and Central Lee High School principal, has been named the 2020 Iowa Secondary Principal of the Year by School Administrators of Iowa. Summarizing the mission of the school she leads, Herdrich said, “As high school educators, we focus on academics, the content learning piece of instruction—the facts, figures, dates and formulas. A second piece we are also responsible for is filling the students’ ‘toolbox’ with learning tools and strategies they can use in new and novel settings to learn outside of the classroom. The third focus of successful education is raising teens with sound character, well-developed soft skills and leadership skills; in other words, educating the heart of the student. When we balance our instruction between these three vital areas—academics, learning tools and growing good people, we have a comprehensive framework for meeting the needs of today’s high schoolers and tomorrow’s workforce leaders.” Herdrich has led the school since 2014 and was previously elementary principal in the district. Her education career began as an elementary special education teacher in Fort Madison. She holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and an additional special education endorsement from Western Illinois University and her master’s in educational leadership from Viterbo University. “Congratulations to Nicole Herdrich on her award! Her passion for her staff and students resonated with the selection committee. Nicole is that special leader who models each day the importance and value of building strong relationships with others,” SAI Executive Director Roark Horn expressed.
