The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the second Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Parents must attend a Baptism Preparation Session prior to their child’s Baptism. This coming Thursday, October 5th, Father Dan begins a four-week adult scripture study on the prophets from 7:00–8:30 p.m. in the Emmaus Center. Following dates are 10/12, 10/19 and 10/26. The course provides an overview of sacred scripture, background on Old Testament prophets, and an in-depth study of the prophets Amos and Hosea. No one can expect to fulfil the Christian vocation with any national integrity in the modern world unless he is at home with a computer, with slums, with race problems, word affairs, with everything. The laity stand at that point

where the Gospel intersects the world, just as the cross stood at the intersection of the cultures of Athens, Jerusalem, and Rome. The laity crosses all frontiers. They do this in the name of Christ. As we see the laity coming in to church on Sunday, we ask them to do unto you as to one another. Are you a unified element in the community? Are you coming together just to fulfill an obligation, trying to avoid mortal sin rather than to come in to strength and feed a life which you ought to spread? Are you seeking a kind of selfish sanctification, forgetful that our Blessed Lord said, “For their sakes do I sanctify myself”? Will you be just like everyone around you, except for this weekly habit of coming to church? When others look at this band of the faithful, will they think, “I ought to be like them; I ought to have their love and their truth, and their inner peace.”? Too often, it’s just the opposite.

Bishop David O'Connell invites the clergy and the faithful of the Diocese of Trenton to journey with him to the National Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, November 4th.

A bus will leave St. Mary of the Lakes at 7:30 a.m. The ride will include doughnuts and juice, morning prayer, and recitation of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary with reflection. Estimated arrival is 11:00 a.m. At Noon, all will gather in the Great Upper Church for a Welcome, the Angelus, and recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. At 12:45 p.m., there will be blessings for individual families in Upper Church chapels; Confessions/Catechetical sessions begin at 1:30 in the Crypt Church. After a special installation Mass last Sunday evening, Y.E.S. members and their families gathered around a bonfire for fellowship and toasted food fare.

As part of a cohort initiative to recruit teens to join our youth ministries, seventh-grader Melaika Gomez, a Y.E.S. Jr. and PREP program member, was one of the teens who spoke at each Mass last week to promote Y.E.S. and its activities this season and showed a video of the good works and charitable donations made by the very active ministry members. Melaika’s mom was installed as a Y.E.S. Advisory Council member at the installation Mass.

Y.E.S. hopes to build another award-wining float for the Medford Halloween Parade this year, as they travel to “infinity and beyond” with the SML Starship. Y.E.S. is in need of the following donations: Mars Bars, Milky Way Bars, Orbit Gum and Sun

Chips. Collection bins are in the back parking lot entrance, school, and PREP offices. (See Build Days notice on this page.) On October 7th and 8th, SML Y.E.S. teens partner with H.E.R.O., the Youth Ministry at Holy Eucharist, to raise funds for St. Phillip the Apostle Church in Huffman, Texas, where 10 youth group members lost their homes and possessions to the hurricane. At the bonfire, parish teens felt the weight of the cross, built by Holy Eucharist Knights of Columbus, as inspiration for their participating in the Stand

Up For Your Faith event next weekend at Holy Eucharist, when the cross will be continuously held by teenagers for 24 hours.

The SMLS School yard and surrounding area get little attention during the summer, so each year, members of the Y.E.S. ministry join the Knights of Columbus to rid the area of overgrown plants and debris, making it clean and fresh for returning students.
