Our Lady of the Snows In the fourth century, a pious couple lived in Rome, Italy, whose sorrow was to have had children with them to share

their gifts. The couple prayed with devotion to the Blessed Virgin, to guide her in the assign-ment of her inheritance. Our Lady appeared to both of them and told them that she wanted them to build a basilica, at the precise point she would point out with a snowfall. The next day, one August, under the summer sun a snowy terrain appeared on Mount Esquiline, to every-one's surprise. In response to the Virgin's sig-nal, the Basilica of Santa Maria la Mayor was built there. Devotion to Our Lady of the Snows is deeply rooted in the Roman people--; to whom she proved to be her protector with great miracles--; and, over the years, it spread throughout Christendom. His feast was cele-brated on August 5 only at the basilica at the beginning; but it was extended to all of Rome, in the fourteenth century; and finally, St. Pius V declared it a feast of the Universal Church, in the 17th century. At present, this Marian invo-cation is also known as Our Lady Protective of Rome or Help of the Roman People.

Spiritual Bonsai Associating a bonsai with Christian life may seem contradictory, be-cause it would imply a reduction of the potential for development of a Christian’s spirituality and character, nonetheless, a bonsai also invites us to reflect on the diversity of gifts, aware that the spirit is always the

same (cf.1 Cor 12:4). The gift way appear to be limited when sharing them only with those closest to us in our daily life: our little pot represented by our family, co-workers, neighbors, community or brothers and sisters in the faith; but let us remem-ber the birth of the Savior in little Bethlehem, the perfection of the praise of God from the mouth of the children, the exaltation of being faithful with little and the transfor-mation of the Ethiopian through the individual intervention of Philip. Only God know if an action we consider insignificant is the awaited answer to someone’s prayer or if the small blessing we share is what is least expected and most needed for another; for this reason, it does no matter whether we grow as tree with large deep roots, with broad foliage, flowers, and fruits or as bonsai; but that our de-velopment, in God’s plan, reflect the majestic of the one who transcends our human limitations. Thus, being small, medium, or large resources, we will gloriously impact our neighbor, with the message of life and the transforming testimony of the Lord Je-sus Christ, our Savior.

Bonsai Espiritual Asociar un bonsái con la vida cris-tiana puede parecer contradictorio, ya que implicaría una reducción del potencial de desarrollo de la espiri-tualidad y el carácter de un cris-tiano; sin embargo, un bonsái tam-bién nos invita a reflexionar sobre

la diversidad de dones, conscientes de que el espíri-tu es siempre el mismo (cf. 1 Cor 12: 4). El modo de regalo parece ser limitado cuando los compartimos solo con las personas más cercanas a nosotros en nuestra vida diaria: nuestra pequeña olla represen-tada por nuestra familia, compañeros de trabajo, vecinos, comunidad o hermanos y hermanas en la fe; pero recordemos el nacimiento del Salvador en el pequeño Belén, la perfección de la alabanza de Dios de la boca de los hijos, la exaltación de ser fiel con poco y la transformación del etíope a través de la intervención individual de Felipe. Solo Dios sabe si una acción que consideramos in-significante es la respuesta esperada a la oración de alguien o si la pequeña bendición que compartimos es la que menos se espera y que más se necesita pa-ra otra. Por esta razón, no importa si crecemos co-mo un árbol con raíces grandes y profundas, con follaje amplio, flores y frutos o como bonsáis; pero que nuestro desarrollo, en el plan de Dios, refleja lo majestuoso de quien trasciende nuestras limitacio-nes humanas. Por lo tanto, al ser recursos peque-ños, medianos o grandes, impactaremos gloriosa-mente a nuestro prójimo, con el mensaje de la vida y el testimonio transformador del Señor Jesucristo, nuestro Salvador.

Nuestra Señora de las Nieves

En el siglo IV vivía en Roma, Italia una piadosa pareja, cuyo pesar era haber tenido hijos

con os que compartir sus dones. El matrimonio le rezo con devoción a la Santísima Virgen, para que le guiara en la asignación de su herencia. Nuestra Señora se les apareció a ambos y les dijo que deseaba que construyeran una basílica, en el punto preciso que ella señalaría con una nevada. Al día siguiente, un agosto, bajo el sol de verano apareció un terreno nevado en el Monte Esquilino, para sorpresa de todos. En respuesta a la señal de la Virgen, allí fue cons-truida la Basílica de Santa María la Mayor. La devoción a Nuestra Señora de las Nieves arraigo fuertemente en el pueblo romano--; al que ella le demostró ser su protectora con grande mila-gros--; y, con el paso de los años, se extendió por toda la cristiandad. Su fiesta se celebraba el 5 de agosto solamente en la basílica al princi-pio; pero se amplió a toda Roma, en el siglo XIV; y, finalmente, san Pio V la declaro fiesta de la Iglesia Universal, en el siglo XVII. En la ac-tualidad, esta advocación mariana es conocida también como Nuestra Señora Protectora de Roma o Auxilio del Pueblo Romano.

This Month’s Liturgy at a Glance

The liturgy of August, in Ordinary Time, is strongly influence by the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the middle of the month. The triumph of Mary, which belongs to the human race, invites toward the same attention that is called for in the Sunday reading of this month. The 18th Sunday (August 4) is an invitation to con-sider the things above, that is, “what matters to God” (Lk 12:21). On the 19th Sunday (August 11) there is continued incidence on the need to remain alert to what is essential, the passage of God through our lives. How do we live in consideration of the things above and with our attention focused on God? The re-sponse can be found in the subsequent Sundays: being alert, in everyday life, to the love toward those around us, justice, and the works of God. The definitive human triumph, reached by Mary in the Assumption, passes through the care of daily life, the service to others, and the attention to social is-sues. The Solemnity of the Assumption has a very popular character, since in many places it mani-fests itself in different devotions. The list of saints—who have also achieved triumph because they were attentive to everyday life—celebrated in August is long and rich. Among them are founders such as Alphonsus Liguori, Dominic de Guzman, John Eudes, Bernard of Clairvaux; humble priest like John Vianney and the Claretian martyrs; and lay people as the school teacher who was martyred, Blessed Victoria Diez. They were not rich in this world; although, as the liturgy insists, they treasured riches for God.

Transfiguration of the Lord

August 6. Whatever hap-pened on Mount Tabor within the hearts of Peter,

James and John, we will never know. The experience was more than words can de-scribe. But certainly, the three Apostles had an experience of the glory of Jesus, the Son of God. In the Gospels, this event follows shortly after Jesus’ description of his human suffering, which will come before the glory of the resurrection. Suffering and glory are inextricably link in the mind of Jesus.

Un Vistazo a la aliturgia del Mes

La liturgia de agosto, en el tiempo ordinario, está fuer-temente influenciada por la solemnidad de la Asun-ción de la Santísima Virgen María, a mediados de mes. El triunfo de María, que pertenece a la raza humana, invita a la misma atención que se requiere en la lectu-ra del domingo de este mes. El domingo 18 (4 de agos-to) es una invitación a considerar las cosas anteriores, es decir, "lo que le importa a Dios" (Lc 12,21). El do-mingo 19 (11 de agosto) hay una incidencia continua en la necesidad de permanecer alerta a lo que es esen-cial, el paso de Dios a través de nuestras vidas. ¿Cómo vivimos considerando las cosas anteriores y con nuestra atención enfocada en Dios? La respuesta se puede encontrar en los domingos siguientes: estar alerta, en la vida cotidiana, al amor hacia los que nos rodean, la justicia y las obras de Dios. El triunfo hu-mano definitivo, alcanzado por María en la Asunción, pasa por el cuidado de la vida cotidiana, el servicio a los demás y la atención a los problemas sociales. La solemnidad de la Asunción tiene un carácter muy po-pular, ya que en muchos lugares se manifiesta en dife-rentes devociones. La lista de santos, que también han triunfado porque estaban atentos a la vida cotidiana, celebrada en agos-to es larga y rica. Entre ellos se encuentran fundadores como Alfonso Liguori, Domingo de Guzmán, John Eu-des, Bernardo de Claraval; humilde sacerdote como John Vianney y los mártires claretianos; y laicos como la maestra de escuela que fue martirizada, la Beata Victoria Diez. No eran ricos en este mundo; aunque, como insiste la liturgia, atesoraban riquezas para Dios.

Transfiguración Del Señor

6 de agosto. Lo que sucedió en el Monte Tabor dentro de los corazones de Peter, James y John, nunca lo sabremos. La ex-periencia fue más de lo que las palabras pueden describir. Pero ciertamente, los tres Apóstoles tuvieron una experiencia de la gloria de Jesús, el Hijo de Dios. En los Evangelios, este evento sigue poco después de la descripción de Jesús de su sufrimiento humano, que vendrá antes de la gloria de la resurrección. El sufri-miento y la gloria son un vínculo inextri-cable en la mente de Jesús.
