Our Lady of Health

Alcantarilla is a Spanish municipality of the Region of Murcia. Tradition told of an image of the Virgin Mary as a little girl that was found there. This image was venerated in a hermitage built under the name of Our Lady the Little One. At the end of the 17th century, a terrible outbreak of the plague hit the town. The residents of Alcantarilla, decimated by the disease, turned their eyes to their Patroness, whom they took out in procession and rogation, followed by the miracle of the epidemic subsiding. From that moment, the Little Virgin began to be called Our Lady of Health. At the beginning of the 18th century, the image was transferred to the monastery of the Minim Friars of St. Francis of Paola, which acted as thehospice, school, and hospital for the city. In 1936, after the outbreak of the Civil War, the monastery was desecrated and looted, and the image of Our Lady was burned. At the end of the war, a sculptor was commissioned to make the current image, which returned to its alcove in the St. Francis monastery. Alcantarilla began to celebrate the festivities in honor of its Patroness every May, in 1971; and two years later the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Health was established.

Dear Friends in Christ, This month our parishes are asked to take up the Peter’s Pence Collection. This collection is a unique opportunity for Catholics in our Diocese and worldwide to come together to help alleviate the plight of those who suffer and are marginalized. For example, the Peter’s Pence collection helped our brothers and sisters in Haiti as they faced difficult challenges from the 2010 earthquake and the destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Pope Francis calls each of us to see each person as an individual “infinitely loved by the Father, an image of God, a brother or sister redeemed by Jesus Christ” (Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate, no. 98). By supporting the Peter’s Pence collection, you help our Church respond to the Gospel imperative to show mercy and grace to those in need. 13 de mayo Nuestra Señora de la Salud

Alcantarilla es un municipio español de la Región de Murcia. Allí, la tradición relataba que fue hallada una imagen de la Virgen María niña. Esta era venerada en una ermita que le fue construida, bajo la denominación de Nuestra Señora la Pequeña. A finales del siglo XVII, una terrible epidemia de peste azotó la villa. Los alcantarilleros, diezmados por la enfermedad, volvieron sus ojos a su Patrona, a la que sacaron en procesión y rogativa, obrándose el milagro y remitiendo la epidemia. Desde ese momento, la Virgen Pequeña comenzó a ser llamada Nuestra Señora de la Salud. A principios del siglo XVIII, la imagen fue trasladada al convento de los Padres Mínimos de San Francisco de Paula, que actuaba como hospicio, colegio y hospital para la ciudad. En 1936, tras el estallido de la Guerra Civil, el convento fue profanado y saqueado, y la imagen de Nuestra Señora fue quemada. Al terminar la guerra, se encargó a un escultor la imagen actual, que retornó a su camarín en el convento de San Francisco. Alcantarilla comenzó a celebrar las fiestas en honor de su Patrona cada mayo, en 1971; y dos años después se constituyó de forma oficiosa la Hermandad de Nuestra Señora de la Salud.

Mayo 2019 Queridos amigos en Cristo, Este mes se le pide a nuestras parroquias que tomen la colecta de Peter's Pence. Esta colecta es una oportunidad única para que los católicos de nuestra Diócesis y de todo el mundo se unan para ayudar a aliviar la difícil situación de quienes sufren y son marginados. Por ejemplo, la colecta de Peter's Pence ayudó a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Haití a enfrentar los difíciles desafíos del terremoto de 2010 y la destrucción causada por el huracán Matthew en 2016.

El Papa Francisco nos invita a ver a cada persona como un individuo "infinitamente amado por". El Padre, una imagen de Dios, un hermano o una hermana redimida por Jesucristo” (Exhortación apostólica Gaudete et Exsultate, no. 98).
