St. Mary’s Youth Retreat Team Goes on the Road!

RCIAEach year, inspired by their Aggie Catholic peers, many students make the life-changing decision to join the Catholic Church. One of the highlights of this journey is the Easter Vigil, when they are welcomed into the Church through the sacrament of baptism or by making a profession of faith. The students also receive the sacrament of confirmation and make their first Holy Communion.

Have you ever floated down a river in a raft? You are gliding along with a nice peaceful current. But, ahead you see really exciting looking whitewater rapids, and so you get everything ready–all oars in the water as you wait for the fun to begin!

As I write this, it’s two weeks before a new school year begins, and that’s how I feel. This year is sure to be filled with joy, excitement, tension, a lot of hard work, some heartbreak and prayer–and that’s just me, not to mention the students, faculty and staff!

I wish all of you could be here every day to see the joy and faith of these students. They are becoming the most amazing people and leaders, and it’s all possible because of your prayers and generosity. Thank you!Please come, and visit often. We’d love to have you along for part of the ride.

About the CoverSt. Mary’s Youth Retreat Team is a group of 50-60 college students who travel to parishes and offer high energy weekend retreats to middle and high school students. Seeing college students engaged in their faith sends a powerful and inspirational message to middle and high school students.

Howdy and thank you for your support of St. Mary’s. When I look back over the last year, I have two reactions: (1) Wow! I don’t know where the time went but it sure went fast; (2) I’m glad that God is on our side because none of this would have been possible without his help—and much of that help comes through your prayers and financial support.

The year got off to a BIG start with the largest Welcome Weekend retreat for incoming freshmen and transfer students ever—225 retreaters. This year we are offering the retreat twice because we just can’t fit any more students in the Activity Center. Thank you and please

thank your pastors for publicizing the retreat. Word-of-mouth and parish bulletins are how incoming students find out about us.

We also started the last school year with 100 of our student ministry leaders gathering for a leadership development workshop. We were also blessed by the participation of students and staff from three other Catholic campus ministry programs. They came to learn how St. Mary’s forms student leaders, and wanted to take this knowledge back to their campuses.

Another blessing over the last year was a Longhorn in our midst. Kevin Jackson, a seminarian from the Austin Diocese, spent his pastoral year with us. He quickly adjusted to Aggie ways, and we quickly learned to love this “enemy” very much. We’ll miss him!

Well, I’ve written a bit, but just covered the first few days before school started! Please see the rest of the report for more news. One final note—because I know you all care about the future of the Catholic Church. Ten Aggies will enter the seminary or begin formation for religious orders this fall. Through your prayers and financial support to St. Mary’s, you gave them a place where they could hear and answer God’s call. Thank you! Gig ‘em Aggie Catholics!

About the Cover: There is no such thing as too many Catholics!

Take the average number of daily Mass attendees (200) and add Welcome Weekend retreaters and staff (360). The result is that the first level of the church is full! This photograph highlights two great blessings over the last year: (1) Mass attendance is up, both daily and weekend; (2) More and more students are beginning their college lives at the Welcome Weekend retreat for incoming freshmen and transfer students. Welcome Weekend is a way for new students to quickly connect with their Catholic “home-away-from-home” and make friends who will influence them in positive ways. The retreat was so successful that we opened another session this fall to accommodate the “demand.”

Impressive Group of Aggie PriestsThe Chrism Mass for the Austin Diocese was an occasion for the Aggie priests to show their school spirit. With many more Aggie priests in other dioceses and religious orders, it is only a matter of time before maroon becomes a liturgical color.

In addition to those pictured, Father Charles Hough IV ‘04 was ordained a priest for the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, and Father Edwin Leonard ’05 was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Dallas.

Making Texas and the World a Better PlaceSt. Mary’s social justice outreach educates students in the importance of charitable living. Aggies Serving Another Person (ASAP) organized weekly service opportunities in the community. The Work of Human Hands Sale at Christmas sold $8,900 worth of fair-traded products, benefitting the needy here and in developing countries. The Stampede for Need, a fun-run, raised over $1,500 for the local St. Vincent de Paul Society. During Spring Break, students went to New Orleans to help with hurricane relief and reconstruction, while other students helped the Missioners of Christ in Honduras. The Aggie Knights of Columbus and Kappa Theta Beta Catholic sorority sponsored a Hoedown to benefit a local prolife organization.

These efforts of thousands of hours of service have made an impact in Texas and beyond!

Adopt an AggieFor many years, St. Mary’s has invited members of the Bryan/College Station community as sponsors in the Adopt-an-Aggie program. The adoptive families open their home to students, from freshmen to graduate levels, providing home-cooked meals and other comforts of home. Each family also serves as a local caring presence, which will listen to the students and give encouragement and support. They help the students navigate some of the “adult” responsibilities that come with college life.

The ReVOLUTION Continues to Grow!The REVOLUTION is a group of students who focus on Blessed Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body teachings. Each semester they present to hundreds of students, encouraging them to learn the positive message and blessing of God’s plan for marriage and family life. As part of this outreach, the students sponsored a retreat with 90 participants and staged the late pontiff’s play, The Radiation of Fatherhood.

CONNeCTParishes all over Texas publicize CONNECT, a program to help incoming freshmen and transfer students quickly make friends with upperclassmen who will become role models, “coaches,” sources of practical advice, and just all-around good friends. Students who remember what it is like to be new on campus and are themselves successfully navigating the college experience are excellent role models. In 2011, nearly 300 new students made a CONNECT retreat before the start of class.

Pilgrim Cross Visits the DormsEvery other Wednesday, an Aggie Catholic student and the Apostles of the Interior Life Sisters hosted a Bible study on campus, in a dorm. All students were welcome. The Pilgrim Cross “traveled” to each dorm Bible study, reminding the students of Christ’s sacrificial love.

The Msgr. Gleissner Society: Leaving a LegacyThe Msgr. Gleissner Society, named after the founder of Catholic campus ministry at Texas A&M, honors those who remember the Aggie Catholics in their will or estate plans. Just as the ministry of Msgr. Gleissner continues to bear fruit over 100 years later, legacy gifts continue to benefit future generations of Aggies.

Benefits of membership include:

• Each year Mass is celebrated for the intentions and souls of the members of the Msgr. Gleissner Society on July 10, the anniversary of Msgr. Gleissner’s ordination.

• Members are kept up-to-date about St. Mary’s, and are invited to attend an annual lunch or dinner, and to participate in a telephone call with the director of campus ministry.

• The names of members, if they wish, will be placed in the Hannigan Chapel, where students will pray for their intentions during Eucharistic Adoration.

St. Mary’s is not a typical parish and does not have the financial resources of a typical parish. Pew collections only cover about 25% of expenses. St. Mary’s relies on thousands of benefactors: current and former students, parents, friends, charitable foundations and others.

Other Funding St. Mary’s has received and is grateful for a $250,000 grant from the Diocese of Austin’s Our Faith ~ Our Legacy Capital Campaign, funded by diocesan Catholics. In anticipation of this grant, St. Mary’s used cash reserves to sustain the programs and services necessary to grow our ministry to meet the record enrollment at Texas A&M University and Blinn College. This grant has helped to restore these reserves, which had fallen below recommended levels.

Awakening Retreats Going Strong!Aggie Awakening is a Catholic retreat designed for college-age students. St. Mary’s offers Awakening three times a year, in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Each retreat involves approximately 300 students making or staffing the retreat.

Aggie Awakening #1 commenced on Friday, October 14th, 1983. St. Mary’s is looking forward to celebrating Aggie Awakening #100 during the Spring Semester of 2014! The retreats are led and staffed by students, who have handed on the process for almost 30 years.

In addition, the Aggie Catholics have trained other universities on how to offer Awakening Retreats. During Awakening #95 this summer, nine students and two campus ministers from the University of Arizona learned how to offer the retreat.

St. Mary’s Retreat MinistryRetreats are a time to step back and reflect on the direction of life. Students at St. Mary’s can participate in a variety of retreats, based on their needs and interests: Awakening, Silent Retreat, Busy Student Retreat, and retreats sponsored by different Catholic student organizations. Last year, over 1,300 students participated in retreats.

The Busy Student Retreat during the Spring Semester brings priests and religious to campus to act as spiritual directors. The retreat helps students live a life of contemplation, scripture study and prayer in the midst of the college responsibilities. Each year, nearly 100 students and 15 visiting priests and religious participate.

Men of Service: St. Mary’s DeaconsThe community of St. Mary’s is blessed by the pastoral care of four deacons: Deacon David Reed, Deacon Glen Milton, Deacon Switzer Deason and Deacon Bill Scott (emeritus). Men of wisdom and experience, the deacons pray, prepare those wishing to receive the sacraments, baptize, witness marriages, teach classes, minister to those in jail, visit the sick, and serve at the many Masses St. Mary’s celebrates each weekend. Catholic Students AssociationThe Catholic Students Association (CSA) is a university-recognized organization of representatives of the different student groups of St. Mary’s. Drawing Catholic students together, CSA sponsors social activities during the school year. Through CSA, St. Mary’s may reserve space on campus for different events, such as our Ash Wednesday Masses and our Distinguished Speakers Series. On the last day of Spring semester finals, CSA sponsors a Raft Trip, in which approximately 120 Aggie Catholics head to New Braunfels for a campfire, music, dancing and rafting on the Guadalupe River.

In appreciation for their experiences at St. Mary’s, students are organizing within their class to present St. Mary’s with a class gift upon graduation. The Class of 2012 donated and pledged over $69,000 to-date. To celebrate, the classmates gathered for a “Last Supper” shortly before graduation to present Father David Konderla with a ceremonial check.

The concept of class gifts started with the Class of 2005, which has committed more than $55,000 to the St. Mary’s permanent endowment. Individual students pledged at least $1,000 to participate in this gift. Inspired by these young Ags, a member of the Classes of the 1940s helped develop the concept of decade class gifts. At this time, the Classes of the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s have committed over $667,000 to this permanent endowment. Proceeds of this endowment will allow St. Mary’s to continue to minister to future generations of Aggies.
