Lent 2010 – “HOPE from the Cross” Our Lenten journey has begun. This Lenten season we will reflect on Jesus’ Seven Last Words spoken as he was dying on the Cross.

March 20/21—5th Sunday of Lent

“It is finished.” – “father, into your hands I commend my

spirit.”

Together reflecting on these “last words”, may we realize they are filled with God’s love. And, this love has given each of us another chance to change and transform the way we think and act.

Who has the nerve to turn off the furnace in church? This is

the second time this year this has happened. We have a janitor

that is paid to take care of our furnaces. It is not the business

of any of our parishioners to meddle with our heating system.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO HAITI DISASTER RELIEF!

In the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, we have collected $545,000 from 127 parishes’ second collections for the disastrous earthquake in Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. We have sent the majority of the money to Catholic Relief Services for short-term and long-term disaster recovery. We will also send a portion to the Catholic Church in Haiti for the rebuilding of their church properties. Thank you for your generosity! For donors to the 2010 Haitian earthquake: Congress has amended the tax law to permit you to deduct contributions of money on your 2009 tax return instead of your 2010 return. Contributions must have been made after January 11, 2010 and before March 1, 2010 for relief of the victims of the January 12 earthquake in Haiti. (Check out all the details on IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions) This message is for your information and is not to be considered tax, legal or financial advice. You should consult your tax advisor for the appropriate treatment of your contributions to Haiti relief.

Stefanie Anderson, M.P.A.

Communications and Marketing Cordinator Secretariat for Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Indianapolis

Dear Community, Since this is spring break for our school children, I don’t seem to remember what is going on. I don’t really have much to say, except if you traveled during this past week, I hope you had an enjoyable and safe vacation. We had another meeting with the architects and other people involved with the planning of our new school. We should be able to break ground this fall. You can’t imagine how complicated this planning process is. I went thru this twice for a new church and school at Our Lady of the Greenwood. I don’t remember it being so complicated. We have to take our time and do everything according to the rules of the state, the county and the city. Thanks to our committee who has worked so hard in the preparation stage for our new school. If we could raise enough money; we could build the school and the church at the same time. We need some more people to support this project. I will call on some of our families personally to beg for your financial support or to increase your contributions if you already made a pledge. Today’s Gospel is about the adulterous woman, but we might wonder about the unfaithful man in the story. John makes no mention of him, even though he is equally guilty with the woman. Perhaps he was a public figure, nervously standing somewhere in the crowd, fearful that he would be found out. In his desperation to save his own skin he may have even been willing to heft a righteous stone and join in her condemnation. It seems unthinkable that a woman could be stoned for adultery, but the practice of public punishment lives on even now. This past summer, in the Republic of the Maldives, near India, 150 women were flogged for having extramarital sex. One 18-year-old fainted after receiving 100 lashes. There were also about 50 men on the list for public lashing, but many got off and many before them have escaped punishment. Jesus, in his love and compassion, writes in the sand and forgives the woman. Then he lifts his eyes to us.

“That’s how you stoke the fires of your

success, by doing what you love in the service

of people you love, who in turn, love what you

do for them” from the book The Radical Edge

by Steve Farber.

Keep smiling, Msgr. Knueven

THANK YOU, Delbert Conley—WELCOME, Doug Loyd…. A new person will be joining the Liturgy/Spirituality Commission. Doug Loyd has graciously accepted the invitation to become chairperson of St. Mary’s Hospitality Ministers. He will be replacing Delbert Conley, who has filled this position for the past five years. Delby has shared his kindness, witty remarks, and those wonderful “candy mints” with many of us, always hoping to see a smile in return. THANK YOU, Delby. You will be missed. The Liturgy/Spirituality Commission looks forward to having Doug Loyd a part of our group, as Doug continues working to make St. Mary’s Hospitality Ministers the very best.

“Presthood 101” Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed this the “Year for Priest”! This Year is meant to benefit our priests, but it is also meant to benefit us, the laity. Our priests give their lives for us—their lives are literally spent in service to us. Therefore, a Year dedicated for them is also for us.

The Sacrament of Holy Orders – Ordination is the sacramental act that integrates a man into the order of bishops, presbyters, or deacons. When a man is ordained, he receives a gift of the Holy Spirit that permits the exercise of a sacred power for the service of the faithful. This sacred power comes only from Christ Himself through His Church.

TRIDUUM

Come Celebrate The Spirit of the “TRIDUUM”

TRIDUUM – The Three Days

What is it ??

The Triduum is central in the life of Catholics.

The Triduum is severeal distinct moments within

ONE three-day celebration of the paschal mystery.

On the evening of Holy Thursday we enter into the “Three Days” that are the center of our year:

The Easter Triduum

A Three-Day Liturgy

HOLY THURSDAY – The Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper

is the beginning of this three-day celebration.

Key focus: Love of others

GOOD FRIDAY -The liturgy begins simply and consists of three main parts:

1) Liturgy of the Word/Reading of the Passion

2) Veneration of the Cross

3) and Communion (sharing the body of the Lord

from the Holy Thursday Mass.)

EASTER VIGIL – The night of nights, the primary celebration of the

resurrection of the Lord

1) Liturgy of the Light 2) Liturgy of the Word 3) Liturgy of Baptism 4) Liturgy of the Eucharist

Begin plans NOW to celebrate with your Parish family

the three greatest days of the Church year.

Following the Easter Vigil you are invited to a reception in the

School gym to welcome the newest members of our parish family.

5th Sunday of Lent/Ezekiel 37:12-14~~Romans 8:8-11~~John 11:1-45

HOLY WEEK SERVICES

PALM SUNDAY – March 28 – This Sunday commemorates the beginning of the last days of Jesus’ life. The palms we wave joyfully today are later burned. The ashes will be used next Lent to begin the season of penance.

CHRISM MASS – Tuesday, March 30 – will be held at the Cathedral in Indianapolis at 7:00 p.m. During this mass, holy oils are blessed by the bishop and are used during the year for anointing the sick, baptism and confirmation. Priests recommit their vows at this mass. Everyone is welcome. People representing each parish in the diocese are present to receive the oils and take them back to their parish.

SPY WEDNESDAY – March 31 – this is the day on which, according to tradition, Judas plotted to betray Jesus.

SEDER SUPPER – March 31 – St. Mary’s Gym (6:30 p.m.) Seder Supper (also called the Passover Meal). This meal is what has evolved into our present Mass and is similar to the Last Supper Christ celebrated with his apostles. It is a celebration of God’s leading the Jews from slavery in Egypt (the Exodus) and a time for fellowship.

The Triduum (Latin for “three days”) our most holy days are: Day 1: Holy Thursday, the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The beginning of this three-day

celebration.

Day 2: Good Friday, celebration of the Lords Passion/Veneration of the Cross.

Day 3: Holy Saturday, the night of nights. The primary celebration of the resurrection of the

Lord.

HOLY THURSDAY – April 1 – Mass is celebrated ONLY AT 7:00 P.M. This is the day of Evening Mass of the Last Supper. The emphasis of the Mass is upon Jesus’ example to serve one another. Jesus calls us to be servants. Through the beautiful ceremony of the Washing of the Feet we give witness to Christ’s command to “Love one another.” This is the beginning of our Eucharist and of Priesthood. The oils that we received at the Chrism Mass are presented to the parish on this evening. The holy oils are brought to the alter with an explanation of each (Oil of sick, Oil of Catechumen, Holy Chrism-baptism, confirmation, ordination). Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the 7:00 p.m. mass until 11:00 p.m. The Body of Christ will be carried in procession with the final place of exposition in the sanctuary area. You are invited to leave the body of the church and come into the sanctuary to spend some quiet time with our Lord.

GOOD FRIDAY – April 2 – Services are at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. We gather quietly and listen to the reading of the passion from the Gospel of St. John. We pray for all the world’s needs. The cross is held up in our midst and we come forward for veneration. (Kiss the wood of the cross) This is followed by Communion.

HOLY SATURDAY – April 3 – Night of all nights, the Easter Vigil begins at 8:00 p.m. This first mass of the Resurrection contrasts light and darkness, death and life. These ideals are made clearer by the New Fire, lighting of the Easter Candle, blessing of the baptismal water, and receiving into our faith those who have been taking instructions in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). This is the height of Holy Week and the climax of Lent.

A reception in the St. Mary’s gym follows the service for the new Catholics. Holy Saturday Easter Vigil is an Easter

Sunday Mass.

EASTER SUNDAY – April 4 – Masses will be celebrated at 6:30, 8:00, 10:00, 11:30 a.m. in church. New life and fresh hope have come in the risen Christ. We celebrate with a renewal of baptismal promises to reject sin and evil, to love God and follow Jesus.

“This is the day the Lord has made. Let us be glad and rejoice. ALLELUIA.” And, we will be “Gathering Gifts for the Poor.” These gifts, along with

the bread and wine, will become a procession of love and generosity.
