Dear Community,

At the Masses the weekend of August 14/15, Father Joe Butz C.Ss.R., a Redemptorist priests and brothers serving in their overseas missions in Udon Thani. Father Butz’s visit to St. Mary’s, is in conjunction with our participation in the Annual Mission Cooperative Program for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Father Butz, a native of Indiana, has been ordained for 38 years. Father Butz is now on the Parish Mission Team in St. Louis, MO. Kindly welcome Father Joe and please give this important appeal your attention. He will stay with relatives while he gives his mission appeal. There will be a meeting for those interested in the New Mexico Mission trip at 6:30 this Monday evening in the parish office. On Tuesday the card players will meet at 12:30 in the Ed. Bldg.; at 7:00 the Faith Formation Committee meets; at 7:00 the Finance Committee meets; and at 7:00 the Stewardship Committee meets. The first day of school will be August 18. The Power of the Past Mass will be at 1:00 p.m. at the fair grounds on Saturday, August 21. Next Sunday St. Maurice will be celebrating 150 anniversary Mass at 2:30 on August 22. From his cross, Jesus entrusted his mother into the care of St. John. Legend has it that John left Jerusalem with Mary and took her to the great city of Ephesus on the shores of the Aegean Sea, then to a safer place in the forest on Nightingale Mountain, where he built a small house for her. Some believe that Mary was there at the time of her assumption. In 1950, Pope Pius XII solemnly declared: “The immaculate Mother of God, Mary ever virgin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul to the glory of heaven.” Mary’s house, destroyed by earthquakes, was rebuilt on its first-century foundation and is now a shrine. The church holds that Mary was assumed bodily into heaven and sees her image in Revelation as “the woman robed with the sun, the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of 12 stars” (Rev 12:1). Keep smiling, Msgr. Knueven

NEW MEXICO MISSION TRIP MEETING

MONDAY, AUGUST 16

6:30 PM

PARISH OFFICE BUILDING We will have an informational meeting

about a possible mission trip to our sister parish in Tohatchi, New Mexico in the latter part of June 2011.

This trip is open to high school students and adults in the parish. Space for the trip may be limited, so if you’re interested, please be sure to attend this important meeting. Coming to the meeting does NOT commit you to the trip. Instead, we are trying to determine an interest level in such a trip. *************************************** Handing on the Gift of Faith Part VI

How can you be a good godparent? By Woodeene

Koenig-Bricker

The single most important action a good godparent can undertake on behalf of a godchild is regular, sustained prayer. As Alfred, Lord Tennyson said, “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.” While it is true that parents are the primary teachers of the faith, godparents can make an enormous difference in how that faith takes root by their ongoing uplifting of their godchildren in prayer.

If you are asked to become a godparent (or are thinking about selecting one), remember that this role is to be taken seriously, for the actions of a good godparent can literally make an eternal difference in a child’s life.

WE NEED YOU! The impact that our catechists bring to the classroom has the power to profoundly change a young person’s life forever. If you believe that you have something valuable to offer to the young people of St. Mary’s, or know of someone who might enjoy this ministry, please call the parish office for more information.

***********************************

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults St. Mary’s will be offering the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) classes for those interested in our Catholic faith. These classes focus on the beliefs and professed faith of our religion. We will share on a variety of topics- Scripture, Religious History, Prayer- in an atmosphere of fellowship and prayer. Anyone interested can call the parish office, 663-8427, for more information or to sign up. All are welcome. RCIA classes will begin on Thursday evening, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Education Bldg Perhaps you have a family member who is not Catholic, but often asks questions about your faith. Maybe you have a friend or acquaintance in the same situation. Take the time to invite someone in!
