Lesson ~ Isaiah 43: 1 - 7 A Reading from the Word of God written in the Forty-third Chapter of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, beginning at the first verse. NOW THUS says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, “Give them up,” and to the south, “Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth - everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 29* Afferte Domino (* from 1662 Book of Common Prayer until further notice) BRING UNTO the Lord, O ye mighty, bring young rams unto the Lord: ascribe unto the Lord worship and strength. 2. Give the Lord the honour due unto his Name: worship the Lord with holy worship.

3. It is the Lord that commandeth the waters: it is the glorious God that maketh the thunder. 4. It is the Lord that ruleth the sea; the voice of the Lord is mighty in operation: the voice of the Lord is a glorious voice. 5. The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedar-trees: yea, the Lord breaketh the cedars of Libanus. 6. He maketh them also to skip like a calf: Libanus also, and Sirion, like a young unicorn. 7. The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shaketh the wilderness: yea, the Lord shaketh the wilderness of Cades. 8. The voice of the Lord maketh the hinds to bring forth young, and discovereth the thick bushes: in his temple doth every man speak of his honour. 9. The Lord sitteth above the water-flood: and the Lord remaineth a King for ever. 10. The Lord shall give strength unto his people: the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. Glory be to the Father, and to Son and to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning Is now and ever shall be World without end. Amen.

Epistle ~ Acts 8: 14 - 17

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Eighth Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, beginning at the fourteenth verse. NOW WHEN the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptised in the name of the

Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel ~ Luke 3: 15 – 17, 21 - 22

The Lord be with you And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to Christ Our Saviour. AS THE people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptise you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Now when all the people were baptised, and when Jesus also had been baptised and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ Our Lord.

Reaffirmation of Baptismal Promises Grant, Lord that we who have been baptised into union with Christ, may never be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, to fight valiantly under His banner against sin, the world and the devil, and to continue His faithful soldiers and servants to the end of our lives. In our baptism we died with Christ and were buried with Him, so that we might arise with Him to a new life within the family of His Church. We can never be baptised again, but we can, in response to a movement of God’s spirit and after careful preparation, reaffirm the promises made at our baptism. So I invite you who are ready to do so to reaffirm your baptismal promises. Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept Him as your Saviour? I turn and accept Him. Do you put your whole trust in His grace and love? I so put my trust. Do you promise to love God and obey Him as your Lord? I promise. Do you renounce Satan, and all the spiritual forces of wickedness? I do.

Page 16: St Mary's Parish Bulletin for January 10, 2016 (online version)

16 |

Do you renounce injustice and all the evil powers of this world? I do. Now in allegiance to Christ you must declare before God and His Church that you accept the Christian faith into which you were baptised, and in which you will continue to live and grow. Do you believe and trust in God the Father who made the world? I believe and trust in Him. Do you believe and trust in His Son Jesus Christ in whom we have redemption? I believe and trust in Him. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit who gives life to the people of God? I believe and trust in Him. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith We believe and trust in one God Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Will you live in obedience to God’s laws, as a loyal member of His Church? With God’s help, I will. Almighty God who gives you the will to do all these things, grant you grace and power to perform them, that He may complete the good work He has begun in you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, whose Holy Spirit equips the Church with a rich variety of gifts, grant that we may use them to bear witness to Christ by lives built on faith and

love. Make us ready to live His gospel and eager to do His will, that we may share with all your Church in the joys of eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Eternal God you have declared in Christ The completion of your purpose of love. May we live by faith, walk in hope and be renewed in love, until the world reflects your glory And you are all in all. Even so; come, Lord Jesus. Amen.

We extend condolences to Joyce Greaves and family on the passing of her son, Adrian Massiah. May he rest in peace.
