The Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost

Themes of the Collect • God has shown his glory among the nations in

Christ. • We pray that God will preserve the works of his

mercy • so that his Church throughout the world may

continue faithfully to confess his Name

The Lesson – Isaiah 53: 4 - 12 Part of the fourth servant song, in which Israel, the servant of God, suffers as an individual who has been shamefully insulted; but the servant endures the suffering uncomplainingly, because it is suffering for others.

Psalm 91: 9 - 16 A song of trust in God’s protection over those who ask him for safety and shelter.

The Epistle – Hebrews 4: 12 - 16 The word of God is alive, piercing and judging his whole Creation. But we do not have to be afraid to approach God, because Jesus, our great high priest, understands our weakness and has been tested in every way. He resisted all the temptations without sin. Through Christ we may receive help and mercy.

The Gospel – Mark 10: 35 - 45 James and John asked Jesus for the privilege of sitting in state at his right and left when he came into his Kingdom. Jesus told them that they didn’t know what they were asking. They could drink from the cup from which Jesus drank, and they could be baptised with the same baptism; but what they asked was not for Jesus to grant. The other disciples were angry at James and John; and Jesus called them to him and said that those who ruled the Gentles exert great authority over their people, but it is not to be so among the disciples. Whoever would be great must be a servant, because the Son of Man had not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

The Collect ALMIGHTY AND everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the

confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lesson ~ Isaiah 53: 4 - 12 A Reading from the Word of God written in the Fifty-third Chapter of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, beginning at the fourth verse. SURELY HE has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the LORD shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 91: 9 - 16 Qui habitat FOR THOU, Lord, art my hope: thou hast set thine house of defence very high. 10. There shall no evil happen unto thee: neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11. For he shall give his angels charge over thee: to keep thee in all thy ways. 12. They shall bear thee in their hands: that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone. 13. Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder : the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet. 14. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him : I will set him up, because he hath known my Name. 15. He shall call upon me, and I will hear him: yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honour. 16. With long life will I satisfy him: and shew him my salvation. Glory be to the Father, and to Son and to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning Is now and ever shall be World without end. Amen.

Epistle ~ Hebrews 4: 12 - 16 A Reading from the Word of God written in the Fourth Chapter of Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews, beginning at the twelfth verse. THE WORD of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel ~ Mark 10: 35 - 45

The Lord be with you And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to Christ Our Saviour. JAMES AND John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said

15 |

to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptised with the baptism that I am baptised with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptised, you will be baptised; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognise as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ Our Lord.

Hurricane Preparedness The adverse weather events in the Caribbean over the past weeks demonstrate that we are still very much in the hurricane season. Constant rain and high winds can wreak havoc and cause untold damage. Therefore regardless of the predictions for a relatively quiet season, it is essential that everyone is prepared. Secure roofs and clear drains. Having experienced a prolonged drought, many are glad for the rains. But too much, too quickly will only make matters worse. Always make sure that you stock up on non-perishable food items. Use dry and canned goods. With canned goods make sure that you also have manual can openers. Some canned foods come with pull-tabs and these are ideal. Officials recommend that individuals be able to sustain themselves for three to seven days without power during a disaster. Items in your hurricane kit should include:

• Water - 1 gallon/ day/ person • Food - canned goods / can opener • Clothes - rain gear / warm jackets • Communication devices • Backup power supplies • Medicine / first aid • Cash • Family evacuation plan

Make sure that your cell/mobile phones are always fully charged and ensure that you have batteries for your radios and similar devices.
